Documents
  • As a basic user, you can search and browse Course Hero’s database of study documents, but only Premier members have the ability to view and download full study documents. If you would like to view a full document, please upgrade your Course Hero membership here

  • Our system takes an estimated 3 days on average for documents to be accepted and credited to your Course Hero account. Please notify support@coursehero.com if your documents have not been approved within this timeframe.

Please note: uploaded documents must be approved by our automated reviewer before they are added to our database and credited to your account. Documents may be denied by our reviewer and therefore not credited to your account. The most common reasons for a document to get denied are duplication and random characters. Users must reach the minimum upload requirement with approved documents in order to be awarded a Premier membership. Course Hero relies on this automated reviewer and does not manually review content for quality.

  • If you’re having difficulty viewing and/or downloading a document, please notify support@coursehero.com of the issue and the specific document and we’ll address the issue.

Tutors
  • Visit www.coursehero.com/tutors and begin typing your question in the box. You can view Tips for Asking a Question and Sample Questions. Once you assign a deadline and a price and submit your question, a Tutor will be able to accept your submitted question and begin answering it. Most questions are accepted within the first 15 minutes.

  • Tutor credits are a dollar amount of credit that can be used towards Course Hero Tutors. Each Premier membership comes with a designated amount of Tutor credits.

  • Tutor credits are not refundable or redeemable for cash.

  • Selecting a price for your question is an important step. We recommend that you keep the following things in mind when determining how much you’re willing to pay:

    • Deadline: do you need help immediately? Short deadlines should have higher prices.
    • Difficulty: is your question really advanced and/or complex? If so, be sure to compensate your tutor for the extra time and care they’ll need with a higher price.
    • Compare to in person tutoring: the average in person tutoring session costs upwards of $50 per hour!
    • Remember: Tutors are more inclined to pick up your question if there is a compelling price attached to it.
  • We love when students have awesome experiences working with a specific Tutor.

Each Tutor has a specific link to their personal expert profile in each category they tutor. If you have great experience with a specific category tutor, we invite the user to request a link to the tutor’s category profile. In the future, the user will be able to visit that tutor’s category profile and submit questions directly to that Tutor.

In order to ensure that your question is answered as quickly as possible, we allow any available expert to answer your question.

  • Course Hero wants you to get the most out of your Tutor experience. As such, users are allowed to follow up with their tutors after the tutor has submitted their final answer to request clarification or missing information.

If after following up with your tutor, you feel as if your answer is still insufficient, please flag a moderator. The moderator will be able to address the situation and, if necessary, reassign you to another tutor.

  • While you don’t have to rate your tutor, we hope that you will! Providing a rating and feedback rewards great tutors and helps us make sure those tutors are sufficiently compensated for their great work. Additionally, your rating helps us ensure that we only have the best tutors on our platform.

  • Once your tutor has submitted an answer to your question and you have accepted it, you will have the option to tip your tutor in addition to the price of the question. We encourage you to tip your tutor for providing an exceptional experience. Tipping great tutors incentivizes them to answer more questions

  • Moderators oversee tutor/question activity on a category by category basis to ensure both timeliness and quality on the Course Hero Tutor platform. As a user, you have the ability to flag a moderator if you feel that your tutor is not answering your question sufficiently. The moderator will help to resolve and issue with the Tutor and ensure that your question is answered.

  • Users are encouraged to flag a moderator when they need to resolve an issue with a tutor such as:

    • Requesting that a question be removed from the platform
    • If the tutor requests a price increase after accepting and the scope of the question
    • If for some reason the user ends up in a dispute with his or her tutor that requires help resolving
  • Course Hero may step in and cancel a user’s question if the content submitted by the user was not actually a question or if a question does not receive response from a tutor or moderator. The user will be notified if Course Hero must cancel the user’s question.

Flashcards
  • There are two options for sharing sets:

    • You can create a set and share it with whomever you want via email or social networks using the share bar in the lefthand column. Sharing a set in this way does not enable the recipient to edit the set.
    • You can share a set with any groups that you have created or belong to. When viewing a set, you’ll be able to indicate which group you’d like to share it with in the lefthand column. Once you have selected a group, you’ll be able to indicate whether that group can only view the set or edit it as well.
  • Course Hero flashcards gives users the options to create Groups to share their sets with. Anyone can create a group to share material with and control the permissions for Group members. Allow all group members to edit and study a set or allow select members to edit and others to only study.

  • Course Hero partners with several iOS and Android apps so you can access your Course Hero flashcard sets on the go. View our list of Course Hero powered mobile apps.

  • Optimal Learn builds customized study programs based on retention optimization principles to help you master any flashcard set by a given deadline.

To set up an Optimal Learn program, first view the Course Hero flashcard set you would like to study and select “Learn Optimally.” This will prompt you to set up and schedule your Optimal Learn program.

  • Yes, Course Hero has also created a Flashcards app through Edmodo. If your teacher uses Edmodo in your classroom, the Course Hero Flashcards app is easily implemented in any Edmodo group.

For Experts

Documents
Tutors
  • Anyone with subject matter expertise can apply to become a tutor on Course Hero.

  • Those interested in becoming a Course Hero tutor are invited to fill out a Tutor Application. Enter the categories you which to tutor and share your credentials that qualify your expertise in those areas. Once you have submitted, Course Hero reviews your application and will notify you whether or not you have been approved.

  • Once your full application has been submitted, it generally takes 3-5 business days for your application to be processed. You will be notified via email regarding the status of your Tutor application for each category you applied to tutor in.

  • General
  • Becoming a Course Hero Tutor is an easy and convenient way to earn money on your own time. Verified Tutors answer as many or as few questions as they want—there’s no limit to what you can earn by helping students reach their full potential.

  • We believe that experts take all forms and therefore do not require that you be a certified tutor or professor to be a Course Hero tutor. However, you do need to share sufficient credentials to prove that you have extensive expertise in the categories which you would like to tutor.

  • You must fill out your credentials in your Tutor Application, and Course Hero will manually review each application and verify your credentials. You can check your credentials here

  • No, once verified, you can be a tutor for as long as you want, as long as you maintain a high quality of performance. There is no minimum or maximum for the number of questions you must answer as a verified tutor; however, as you answer more questions and garner positive feedback from users, you will be able to increase your “Tier” as a tutor, meaning you’ll be able to have higher priority when responding to questions and also earn more per question.

  • Course Hero Tutors are ranked at four different Tiers based on their performance on the platform. The highest Tier Tutors (a function of customer feedback and number of questions answered and accepted) receive priority when selecting questions to answer, have their profiles featured on Category homepages and receive a higher share of revenue/tip per question answered. Tier 4 tutors are the highest rated, followed by Tier 3, etc. Only you as a verified tutor see your Tier. You can improve your Tier by answering more questions and garnering positive feedback from users.

  • Getting Started
  • You must submit an application to become a Course Hero tutor. Apply here: There are 3 steps to the application process:

    • Choosing your categories(s) of expertise: select the topics that you would like to tutor in. If you do not see your category, you can add a Category by selecting the Add Category link.
    • Creating a profile for each category: For each category of expertise selected, create a mini-profile that showcases your credentials for that topic and encourages users to seek out your expertise.
    • Getting verified: Once you have created your tutor profiles and filled out your personal information and credentials, submit your application to be verified by the Course Hero team. Please allow 3-5 days for your application to be reviewed. Not all applications are guaranteed verification. Course Hero will notify you if you have been accepted as a verified Course Hero tutor.
  • Course Hero will notify you via email when your application has been approved and your credentials verified.

  • Prospective tutors will be notified if they have been verified within 3-5 business days.

  • Course Hero will notify you if your application to be a verified tutor is not accepted; however, the company will not reveal the details of its evaluations.

  • Tutors have the following types of profiles on Course Hero:

    • Public Profile: the Public Profile showcases your username and photo and is how you are identified in the tutor community. This is the username you use to log in.
    • Mini Profiles: Tutors also create a mini-profile for each category of expertise. Your mini-profile should be an accurate reflection of your expertise in that category. This mini-profile will be visible to the user when you respond to a question. Users may also request you as a tutor based on the content in your mini-profile, so you should play up your strengths and any specializations you have.
  • Yes, you may select multiple categories of expertise and submit your credentials for each when you build your mini-profile for each category. Tutors will be verified for each independent category, and verification in one category of expertise does not guarantee verification in every category.

  • Yes, if you do not see your category of expertise listed, you may create a category using the "Add Category" link. You can also add a category later by using the "Add Category" button under Profile Settings in your Tutor Dashboard.

  • Course Hero currently only promotes the categories in its standard list of categories by featuring them on the Course Hero tutoring homepage. Categories added by tutors are not initially promoted by Course Hero, and therefore tutors in those non-promoted categories are responsible for promoting their expertise themselves however they see fit (see Can I promote my Course Hero tutor mini profiles? below).

Over time, however, as non-promoted categories grow in popularity, Course Hero will add them to the promoted categories list to be featured throughout the site.

  • Course Hero only features top Tier Tutors on category homepages. Learn more about Tutor Tiers here

  • Yes, once you have been verified, a public link will become available for each of your mini-profiles in your Tutor Dashboard. You’ll be able to share this link with anyone, regardless of whether they are a Course Hero member or not. You’ll also be able to post the link on any of your other profiles, whether a website or social media profile like LinkedIn or Facebook.

To view your mini-profile link for a category, visit your Profile Settings. Your mini-profile links are listed under Edit Categories beside the categories you’re approved to tutor.

  • No. It is against the Terms of Use to share your personal contact information, address, private email address, links to personal stores, personal blogs, personal websites, or any other identifying information with anyone (users or other Tutors) on the site.

  • Answering Questions
  • Tutors select the questions that they would like to answer by reviewing the Open questions listed under the BROWSE QUESTIONS tab on their Tutor Dashboard. Open questions are denoted by a green open door icon (see below for an overview of all icons).

All asked questions contain three elements: the asked question itself, a suggested price and a suggested deadline. The tutor must accept the question and the price before answering the question by the stated deadline.

Once you identify a question you would like to answer, you must accept the question by replying to the user under the “Commit to Answer” option. By accepting the question, Course Hero Locks the question so that no other tutor may answer it.

  • We want our tutors to be as confident as possible when responding to user’s questions. As such, before committing to answering a question, a tutor may respond directly to the user to ask for more information using the “Ask for Clarification” option.

Note: This response is public and does not commit that tutor to answering the question. However, be mindful that other tutors will be able to see any additional information that the user provides and may accept the question and answer it themselves.

  • In order to accept a question, the tutor must respond to the user using the “Commit to Answer”option.

You may correspond with the user prior to submitting a response to request more information that may better help you answer the question. You can do using “Reply” below your Respond to Question options.

Upon receipt of your Answer, the user may Accept the response as is or ask for more information if he or she feels the answer is insufficient. If the user believes the response is insufficient, the tutor may revise the answer accordingly and resubmit to the user. The exchange is complete when the user accepts the tutor’s answer.

  • Working with a tutor is often a collaborative process, so the user may reply to the tutor if he or she feels that the tutor’s answer is insufficient. The tutor may then revise the Answer and resubmit to the user. If the user still feels the second Answer is insufficient, the user may at this point request a new tutor and the question will be opened up to another available tutor.

If the Answer is rejected by the user a third time and the user has not requested a new tutor, the question thread will be flagged to a moderator to control for quality. The moderator has the authority to unassign the current tutor if he or she feels necessary and open up the question to another tutor to answer.

If the Answer is rejected by the user a third time and the user has not requested a new tutor, the question thread will be flagged to a moderator to control for quality. The moderator has the authority to unassign the current tutor if he or she feels necessary and open up the question to another tutor to answer.

  • If the tutor feels the price requested for the question is insufficient, the tutor may flag that they feel the current price is too low and suggest a new price which they feel would be more appropriate using the Suggest Price Increase option.

If you have already accepted a question, do not ask the student to increase the price. Upon receiving additional information from a student, if you feel that the scope of the question has changed since you accepted the question and warrants a price change, please flag the question to a moderator who will handle any pricing adjustments.

Note: suggesting a new price does not guarantee that that question will be reoffered at that price or that you, as a tutor who suggested a new price, are guaranteed to answer that question if the price is amended. You will, however, be notified via email if the question is reposted at a new price and will go through the standard question selection process to select that question and answer it.

  • If the tutor feels the deadline requested for the question is not feasible, the tutor may suggest a new deadline which they feel would be more appropriate using the Suggest Deadline Change option:

Note: suggesting a new deadline does not guarantee that that question will be reoffered at that price or that you, as a tutor who suggested a new deadline, are guaranteed to answer that question if the deadline is amended. You will, however, be notified via email if the question is reposted at a new deadline and will go through the standard question selection process to select that question and answer it.

  • If the tutor recognizes that a question has been assigned to the wrong category, the tutor may reassign the question to a category which they feel would be more appropriate using the Change Category option:

Note: if a tutor assigns a question to a category outside of their approved Categories of expertise, the tutor will not be able to answer that question.

  • Yes, users may ask questions of specific users by directly asking the tutor the question via the Tutor’s mini-profile. This tutor has sole discretion over whether or not to answer the question. Should the tutor chose not to answer the question, the tutor may use the “Opt Out” function, which will open up the question to be answered by another available Tutor.

Users may directly ask a Tutor a question regardless of whether or not that Tutor is currently online. If a user has asked a question of a specific Tutor, that Tutor will be notified via email of the pending question.

  • The Watch Question feature allows tutors to keep an eye on questions that they may not be able to answer now, but might want to revisit in the future. Watched questions do not assign the questions to you, but rather provide an easy way for you to keep track of topics you are interested in. Watched questions will appear under your “My Questions” tab.

  • My Questions is the section of your Tutor Dashboard where you can view all of the questions that you are currently watching, in the process of answering or have previously answered. It is basically a log of your activity as a Course Hero tutor.

  • A series of Moderators oversee Course Hero’s Tutor platform and are available to answer questions or resolve any issues that may arise between tutors and users. Tutors can directly correspond with Moderators via private messages. The correspondences will appear and be saved under the tutor’s My Messages tab.

  • Questions are automatically “locked” as soon as a tutor opens the question for review, preventing other tutors from reviewing and answering the same question at the same time. This eliminates duplicate efforts on the part of the tutors. A question can only remain locked for a limited amount of time before the Tutor must decide whether to answer the question or allow another tutor to review and answer instead.

  • “Closed” questions have been fully addressed by a tutor and the user is not requesting further assistance. Questions can be “closed” by manually by customers or Course Hero administrators or moderators.

  • You’ll encounter an array of icons throughout your Course Hero tutor experience. Here’s a run-down of what they all mean:

    Icon Meaning
    Question Status
Question is Open and available to answer
Question is Locked; a tutor is viewing or answering

  • We absolutely encourage you to research and cite content from other academic or reputable sources to support and validate your reply to a user’s question; however you may not plagiarize another’s content and repurpose it as your own response without proper attribution. Plagiarism is in violation of our Terms of Use and will result in termination of your Course Hero account.

  • If a user has asked a question of a specific tutor via the submission box on that tutor’s profile, then that tutor is the only one who may answer this question. However, if a customer requests a tutor by name in a post, then there is no formal lock on the question, and any tutor may respond. However, we request that tutors respect the user’s request and allow the identified tutor to respond.

  • When a user replies to your answer and you realize that you are not able to continue helping the user, you may opt out of the exchange by using the "Opt Out" button at the bottom of your question screen. This will open up the question to be answered by another available tutor.

Additionally, if you feel that the question is beyond your area of expertise, you may flag the exchange to a Moderator by selecting the “Request Moderator” option. The Moderator can then reassign the question by opening it up to other available tutors.

  • No, tutors may only answer questions within their verified categories of expertise. If you would like to answer additional questions outside of your current categories of expertise, you may add another category and mini-profile on your Tutor Dashboard and submit it to be verified. Once that mini-profile has been verified, you may begin answering questions in that category.

  • TUTOR: To control for quality and ensure original responses, Course Hero scans all tutor answers for plagiarised content. If content in a response directly matches another source, that information will be flagged to the tutor for review. Understanding that the plagiarism tool will flag information that may be otherwise properly cited, the tutor will have the opportunity to revise the content or approve the response as is. Tutor interactions with the plagiarism tool and flagged content are based on the honor system; however, Course Hero reviews all instances where the tutor overrides the plagiarism flag. There will be consequences for tutors who approve a response containing plagiarized content. Consequences range from being downgraded Tiers to being banned from Course Hero.

TRANSTUTOR: To control for quality and ensure original responses, Course Hero scans all tutor answers for plagiarised content. If content in a response directly matches another source, that information will be flagged to the Moderator for review. Understanding that the plagiarism tool will flag information that may be otherwise properly cited, the Moderator will have the opportunity to approve the response as is or resubmit the content to the tutor for revision.

Course Hero reviews all instances where a Moderator overrides the plagiarism flag, and there will be consequences for Moderators and tutors who submit responses containing plagiarized content. Consequences range from being downgraded Tiers to being banned from Course Hero.

  • Course Hero reserves the right to keep or delete responses by former tutors at its discretion.

    • Don’t hesitate to ask for more information, pictures, or screenshots—you’ll be able to deliver the best answer when you have as much information about the question as possible.
    • Deliver thorough responses and don’t make assumptions about the user’s prior knowledge of the subject as they may be complete beginners. You can always ask the user for as much information as you need to get a sense of how to deliver the best response possible.
    • Feel free to do research before responding to the user if it will help you deliver the most thorough response possible. Be sure to engage with the user first to give him or her a sense of timing on the response.
    • If you feel that a question is too advanced for you or outside your realm of understanding, you may use the “Opt-Out” option. This allows another tutor who may be better suited to answer the question to take over and also takes the pressure off of you to force and answer that is outside your realm of understanding. Do not force yourself to deliver an answer that you are unsure about, as that results in a bad experience for the user and potentially a negative rating from that user for you the tutor.
  • Read about Tutor Guidelines here

  • Every time a tutor answers a question, the user has the opportunity to rate their interaction with that Tutor on a scale of 1-5. Tutor ratings influence the Tutor’s Tier, so the rating system incentivizes tutor’s to deliver the best response possible to garner positive feedback from users. Five is the highest rating, one the lowest.

  • Getting Paid
  • Requirements are on a per category basis. The columns on the left show the requirements for admission to the tier, while the columns on the right show the revenue split associated with that tier. Every Tutor starts at Tier 1, and Course Hero reviews all Tutors before leveling up tiers.

Tier/Level Accepted Answers Success Rate* % of Question Price % of Tip
    Tier 1 N/A N/A 35% 70%
    Tier 2 15 87% 40% 80%
    Tier 3 50 92% 45% 90%
    Tier 4 150 top 10% of Tier 3 50% 100%

    * Success Rate is defined as questions accepted/questions assigned to a tutor.
** At each tier, tutors get 5 minutes priority viewing over the previous tier. i.e. Tier 4 tutors get 5 minutes priority over tier 3, and so on.

  • Your earnings are tracked on your Tutor Dashboard, and tutors may request payments via PayPal whenever their earnings are in excess of $20.

If a tutor is removed from the platform, they’ll be able to pay themselves out via PayPal if their account balance is in excess of $20. Tutors who have been removed from the platform should contact customer service to pay out a balance of less than $20.

  • No, it is the tutor’s responsibility to report earnings to the IRS.

Flashcards
  • The best way to share a set with your students is to first create a Flashcards Group and add your students to it. Flashcard Groups can both view and study a set, or you can control the settings to allow all members of the group to edit a Flashcard set.

Once you have created a Flashcard set, you’ll be able to share it with any Group that you have created or are a member of by selecting the Group from the list in the lefthand column. Once you have selected a group, you’ll be able to indicate whether that group can only view the set or edit it as well.

You may also create a set and share it with your students individually via email or social networks using the share bar in the lefthand column. Sharing a set in this way does not let the person edit your set.

  • Yes, Course Hero has also created a Flashcards app through Edmodo. For teachers who use Edmodo in their classrooms, the Course Hero Flashcards app is easily implemented in any Edmodo group.
