DiDonato Genny DAH 201 Harper Piver Online Activity #6 Define/describe the following terms in complete sentences. Hegemony refers to oppressive aspects of power and promotion of ideology to mold consciousness, Hegemony occurs when doctrines, opinions, or ways of thinking are used to manipulate citizens to adopt oppressive meanings. Eurocentric is when one is considering Europe and Europeans as focal to world culture, history, economics, etc. Ethnocentric suggests that the ethnic or cultural group to which one associates is considered more favorable or more highly valued than another. Ethnocentric practices advance ideological assumptions that legitimize certain ways of thinking and acting. Quadrilha is a Brazilian folk dance, which is common to most people in the country. The dance was brought to Brazil by European immigrants; quadrilha originated in the French courts during the 19th century as the quadrille. This folk dance is a smaller tradition from within the larger tradition which underlies Brazilian society. It promotes an agricultural lifestyle, community, and family values as well as Catholic religious values. Traditional Classical dance is defined as the process of promoting traditions through dance. Through this process, certain dances remain relatively unchanged throughout the centuries. Classical dance involves, the pedagogy is specific and detailed, having developed over a long period of time. Examples of classical dance: Ballet and Bharatanatyam Swing dance is a form of social and popular dance. Bharatanatyam originated in the south of India, and is considered to be a form of classical dance. The meaning of the word Bharatanatyam: "bha"- expression, "ra"- rage, "ta"- rhythm, "natyam"- the art of dance. Define the following terms and give examples of each. Primitive dance: In the Anthropological termonaligy, primitive suggests: "an autonomous and self contained system with its own set of customs and institutions, that may be isolated or have more or less contact with other systems but is usually economically independent and the people are often, if not always, non-literate." Folk dance involves traditional values of folk societies and is a dimension of the total society which it exists. Joann K suggests that folk dance is commonly performed as a part of the little tradition within the great tradition of a given society. People in folk societies interact and have a symbiotic relationship with the larger society since they live together geographically, relate economically, and share certain aspects of cultural knowledge. Ethnic dance, well all dance has ethnic roots, but for some dances it is very difficult to determine one specific origin, or the several origins that might have been blended together to create the movement form. However there are dances that do clearly reflect a particular ethnic group. Usually the term, ethnic dance is used to lump together dances with origins other than Western Europe, which then creates levels of authority and control. Social/popular dance can be categorized to be dances that are social, in which the primary objective is meeting and interacting with people, particularly those of the opposite sex. Examples of social/ popular dance would be: Folk dancing at community centers, raves, swing dancing at a bar, etc. In your own words, answer the following questions in complete sentences. Compare and contrast primitive, ethnic, and folk dance. Primitive, ethnic, and folk dance all change depending on the context. For instance, primitive dance is taught around the world and in universities. The primitive form is suggested to have distinctive moves that are exotic and basic, as well as involving African-like dance movements. Primitive systems imply that the society has no form of written communication. However folk societies differ from primitive systems. Folk societies interact with other societies, due to there near by location; geographical this makes it possible for them to grow a relationship though out the societies. That is why folk dance is very often preformed as a little tradition within a greater tradition of a given society. Therefore ethic dance relates to both primitive and folk, because all dance has ethnic roots from where they are derived from. But ethnic dance does not usually refer to ballet, modern, or any other form based on Western European civilization's values and beliefs. Using terminology learned in this chapter, explain in complete sentences why the following depictions are problematic: 1. "Native Americans dancing around a campfire" This would be stating a stereotype, while also generalizing an entire group's dance into one form. All stereotypes derive from a basis of some truth, but it doesn't mean that it is all true. The statement is suggesting that Native American only dance around camp fires, and don't do any other form of dance. 2. African dance: Well first of all there all different tribes inside the African culture whom would like recognition for their dance, as well as their different ways of life. Therefore this generalization leads people to the belief that all African dance is alike, which is untrue; even though it may come from the same culture, it does not have the same meanings behind every African dance. I think the debate that started in class was riveting. It is great to see students get passionate about their opinions. It is also great to see how everyone has a different set of experiences influencing their beliefs. That's the kind of stuff this class should bring out. What is dance? Why do people do it? Why would some find it offensive to have their form called dance? Why would others be mad if their form was not considered dance? These last three questions are meant to capitalize on something our class got interested in and help all of us cogently express our own opinions and look at the beliefs of the opposite side. At the beginning of the semester we worked on developing definitions of dance and today made a great link to revisiting that idea. Write three strong, compelling reasons why martial arts should not be categorized as dance. You may use information you know of provide information from a source such as a website or book. 1. Martial arts is a form of karate, it is not a dance but a form of self defense. 2. Dance is an art that is preformed for nice enjoyment, but martial arts is a sport which has winners and losers. In dance everyone performs the part that is given to them, but in martial arts you never know what may come up. 3. Martial arts incorporate using what you learn to defend yourself, while one may use dance to entertain another. Write three strong, compelling reasons why martial arts should be categorized as dance. You may use information you know of provide information from a source such as a website or book. 1. Martial arts are similar to capoeira, which is defined as a form of dance. 2. Martial arts incorporates certain movements grouped together to form one exact move. Dance also incorporates different movements grouped together to form a performance. 3. Martial arts suits a purpose of relaxation for some. Dance is also used at times to relax ones mind. In complete sentences that comprise at least one detailed paragraph, write and explain your own definition of dance. Please do NOT use the definition in the book. There is no right or wrong, I am just interested to see your "mid-semester" definition. Dance is a form of many movements incorporated with each other, to form one certain dance performance. Dance has categories for different types; there are different ways of moving based upon the certain type that you are performing. Dance has been around for a long time. Depending on the culture of the dance, there may be a meaning entailed to why one is doing it. Culture plays the largest role while differing among so many forms of dance.
