Application Pre-Med Process: AMCAS Frequently Asked Questions Revised May 2007 What is AMCAS? AMCAS stands for the American Medical College Application Service. The majority of medical schools in the United States participate in this program. This program only requires the student to fill out one application and that application in turn is sent to all the schools designated by the student. When do I use AMCAS to apply? You are encouraged to apply early, but not before June 1 (approximate date) of the year prior to your potential matriculation date (ex. If you wish to attend medical school fall 2008, your application can be sent as early as June 5, 2007). Application deadlines are not set by AMCAS, but by each medical school. What is the Early Decision Program? Some medical schools have what is called an early decision program. As a part of the early decision program, applicants must have their AMCAS application sent in by August 1 of the year before they plan to enter medical school. With early decision you can initially apply to just one medical school. If you are accepted early decision into the one school to which you applied, you must attend that school. Schools typically must notify you by October 15th. If rejected or the notification deadline lapses, you can apply to that school and any other school you designate through the regular application process, although you will be a later applicant. Where are AMCAS materials found? AMCAS materials can be found online at http://www.amcas.org. Applications for the matriculating year are typically available the year before on or around May 3. (i.e. 2008 applications are available May 2007). What happens after I submit my AMCAS application? After receiving a copy of your AMCAS application, schools will send you supplemental application materials (secondary) which must be completed before they will invite you for an interview. What if a medical school does not use AMCAS? Contact the schools directly to obtain an application. Texas medical schools (except Baylor) do not participate in AMCAS. They use the TMDSAS available at http://www.utsystem.edu/tmdsas/ TMDSAS Application Tips: Please read the entire instruction book before filling out the application. The TMDSAS instructions are at: http://www.utsystem.edu/TMDSAS/ApplicationInstructions.htm It is very detailed and precise. Follow the directions carefully! Mistakes may delay your application from being processed. If you have any questions about the application procedure contact TMDSAS directly at: tmdsas@utsystem.edu / (512) 499-4785 1. How do I designate letters of recommendation being held by the Preprofessional Advisement Office? TMDSAS considers the letters held in our office as a committee packet. If you did not use the Preprofessional Office to hold your letters, TMDSAS will only allow two individual letters. *You do not need to submit TMDSAS evaluation forms if yours letters are being held in our office. The cover sheet you signed and gave to your evaluators is sufficient. 2. Should I release my information to the Preprofessional Advisement Office? We strongly encourage this and appreciate it if you check the Yes, Release Information box and release your information to our office. This facilitates our completing outcomes assessment and being able to generate statistics regarding BYU students and application/matriculation data. AMCAS Application Tips: Please read the entire instruction book before filling out the application. The AMCAS instructions PDF are: http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/2008amcasinstructionsrevised.pdf. It is very detailed and precise. Follow directions completely and precisely! Mistakes may delay your application from being processed. If you have any questions about the application procedure contact AMCAS directly at: amcas@aamc.org / (202) 828-0600 1. How do I designate BYU semesters? Use the follow designations for semester designation. Be sure to assign the correct calendar year for spring and summer so that your coursework follows chronological order. Academic years start at the beginning of Summer Term and end at the finish of Spring Term. BYU Fall Semester = AMCAS 1st Semester (Fall) BYU Winter Semester = AMCAS 2nd Semester (Spring) BYU Spring Term= AMCAS Mini Semester (Spring) BYU Summer Term= AMCAS Summer Session (Summer) 2. Where do I list AP credits? AP credits should be listed in the 1st college semester and assigned with the AP course designation. If possible, break down your credits as listed on your BYU transcript. For example, list the courses for which received you credit from taking the AP exam. For example, if you took the AP English exam and received credit for ENG 150 then list under your 1st college semester: ENG 150 3.0 credits P (because you got a passing grade) and then check the Advance Placement box. 3. Where do I list language test credits? BYU language test credit is to be listed as AP credit and must be included in the 1st college semester. (For those of you who are transfer students, you can either list the language test credits under your 1st college semester even if it was at a different institution or under the first college semester at the institution where you received the language credit. For example, if you transferred to BYU in fall 2004 and subsequently received language credit at BYU then list the credit as fall semester 2004.) 4. How do I list integrated lab coursework? If your courses have integrated labs with instruction list the course description as and lab and assign the Course and Lab designation. (e.g. Chem 105 - General chemistry and lab). 6. Are Biol 139/339/439 BCPM? No, these do not qualify as science classes and should be assigned to Other . 7. Are Exercise Science Courses BCPM? No, except for EXSC 362, 363, 367, and 400. Others are Health Sciences . 8. Are Exercise Science (PE, sports, etc.) Courses BCPM? No, they are Other . 9. Are NDFS courses BCPM? No, they are Health Sciences . 10. What does go into BCPM science GPA? Biology: Any course in the college of Biology and Agriculture except professional orientation courses and NDFS. Chemistry: Classes taken from the department of Chemistry. Physics: Astronomy, physics, or courses from the Physical Sciences department. Math: Courses from the Math department, Statistics department, and other applied mathematics courses. 11.Will the Preprofessional Advisement Office send my transcripts to AMCAS? NO!! YOU must send transcripts by requesting that the BYU Records Office send your official transcript to AMCAS. Requests can be made in person at the Records Office in B-150 ASB. Requests can also be mailed or faxed to the Record s Office using the form available at: http://saas.byu.edu/depts/records/Online_Order_Form.pdf. READ Tip #11. 12.How and when do I send my transcripts to AMCAS? You must request transcripts to be sent directly to AMCAS from all schools that you declare course work. Transcript requests must be accompanied with the AMCAS transcript request letter that you can print out on AMCAS. You can decide to request your transcripts as soon as Winter grades are posted, however if you are taking spring classes and also wish to have your spring grades posted, transcripts should be requested following the posting of spring grades, usually in mid-June. 13.What should I list for my Work and Activities section? Include significant experiences, awards, honors, research, service, hobbies, leadership, or extracurricular activities. You don t necessarily need to list 15 activities quality over quantity. If you have too many activities, grouping activities together by category is permissible (e.g.- list all of your shadowing experiences as one activity). 14.How many schools should I apply to? As many as necessary to get in. Usually students apply to 12 to 16 schools. Apply to a range of schools: a couple of dream schools, a couple of back-ups , and a majority of schools that you have a real chance of getting in. Become familiar with the Medical School Admissions Requirements that is available in our office or Course Reserve at the library. You should also check the binder containing detailed statistics about BYU student acceptances that is kept in the Preprofessional Advisement Office . 15.When do I request letters of recommendation to be sent to medical schools? The answer to this question was answered in your letters of recommendation packet, so please review the information in your packet. In short, we will not send letters until you request it. Do not request unless all the letters you are expecting are on file. When the schools have notified you that they will accept your letters, log into our web site at http://ccc.byu.edu/healthpro. Click the link on the left, Request letters of recommendation. *If you are applying to both TMDSAS and AMCAS, please make sure that you already have an AAMC ID and a TMDSAS pin so you can report both of them to us. For additional questions feel free to contact the Preprofessional Advisement Office at (801) 4223044, or contact AMCAS directly at (202) 828-0600, or TMDSAS directly at (512) 499-4785. Good luck!
