PSYC Leadership 4650 Summer 2003 Personality and Leadership view was the natural born leader or great person theory approach This stemmed from the belief that all leaders possess certain innate characteristics that set them apart from others Hundreds of studies in the 1940s and 1950s failed to support this view The personality (or trait) approach was abandoned until the 1970s Earliest Personality and Leadership Stodgill s 1970 review of 160+ studies revived interest in the personality approach Robert Lord and his colleagues did some more definitive studies in the 1980s (using meta-analytic methods) Personality and Leadership Stodgill (1970) found such traits as energy level, adaptability, sociability, achievement motivation and selfconfidence to predict leader emergence Lord et al.
