3420 HIST The Middle East in the Middle Ages, 500-1500 Wednesday, 5:30 8:20 PM Young Hall Rm 206 Department of History Instructor: Dr. Timothy May Office Phone #: 706.864.1913 Prerequisites: HIST 2000 recommended E-mail Address: tmmay@ngcsu.edu Office Location: Young Hall 121 Office Hours: MW 1:30-3:30 PM T 9:30 11:30 AM Course Description: In this course, we will discuss the rise, origins, and development of Islamic civilization in the Middle East, as well as other areas to which it expanded in pre-modern times. This will include discussion of the political, cultural, social, and economic factors, which helped to shape that civilization during the course of its development. In this context, we will explore many different aspects of Islamic culture throughout history. After a brief discussion of the Middle East s pre-Islamic background, we will discuss the life of the Prophet Muhammad and the basic doctrines of Islam before examining the ways in which the political, cultural, and religious institutions associated with Islam and Muslims came to shape the lives and worldviews of the people who lived under them. In this, we shall devote attention, not only to Islam in the Middle East, but in Africa, Central Asia, and South and Southeast Asia, as well. Course Objectives: Students who complete this course should be able to successfully meet the following objectives: Understand the rise and development of Islam prior to the modern period Know the geography of the Middle East Understand the general history of the Middle East in the Middle Ages Demonstrate analytical thinking and writing skills by writing and presenting a paper on a selected topic related to this period. Demonstrate critical and analytical skills by writing by working with primary sources. Methods of Instruction: Primary methods of instruction will be through lecture and discussion. Therefore, it is expected that students will have completed reading assignments before the class. Lectures and readings both cover material not in the other. Students will be held responsible for both. In general, students should look to lecture for a general framework of each topic, and be prepared to use readings for supporting details and examples necessary to earn an A for the course. Evaluation Methods: Map Quiz: 10% Mid-term: 20% Paper 1: 6 pages 20% Paper 2: 6 pages 20% Final Exam: 30% 1 General Expectations: - absence/attendance policy: As adults you are not required to attend class. I realize that there are occasions when you might miss a class. However, as ostensibly you are here to learn, I do expect you to be here. I will periodically take attendance, and more importantly, unless you have a documented reason (e.g. illness, family emergency, official NGCSU business), if you miss a pop quiz or exam, you may not make it up. Also you are responsible for getting notes for the class. If you are going to miss a class, it is not necessary to inform me of it except in the case of a regularly scheduled exam. Incompletes will not be granted except in the direst of situations. - class withdrawal policy: Should you decide to withdraw from this class (for whatever reason) it is your responsibility. October 7th is the last day to withdraw with a W. - classroom participation policy: While class participation is not a part of your grade, if you participate in class discussions, ask questions, and generally show that your are actively learning, this will be to your benefit. If your grade is teetering on the brink between grades, I am more likely to give you the benefit of the doubt and push it to the higher grade if you participate in class. Of course, participation usually works better if you attend class. See the above section on attendance. Class participation also means respecting your peers, so please turn off any phones and pagers. Although I do not mind people bringing drinks please refrain from eating in class. - individual vs. collaborative work policy: All work should be completed individually, although I encourage you to study together and discuss topics and themes. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1996. 3 Assignments: Paper 1 & 2 Papers 1 & 2 must be 6 pages long. I will accept 7 pages. Anymore than that means you need to spend time revising your paper. See the class website for more on expectations for papers. All research papers must be handed in on time to ensure fairness. Paper grades will be lowered by five points for each day late. The student must also submit the paper to www.Turnitin.com by midnight of the due date. Failure to do so will result in the loss of 5 points per day. No excuses. The paper should be formatted in the Turabian style and will be graded based on four criteria: format, grammar, style, and content. These papers are not simple narratives. I expect substantial critical analysis of the events, sources, and literature. For Paper 1, students will select a topic that deals with the period between 600 & 1000. The topic must be approved in advance. You need to turn in your paper topic by date in syllabus or lose 5 points on the paper. Topics should be phrased in the form of a question which you wish to ask about the past, and handed in with at least four sources for approval on the date noted on the syllabus. At least one will be from al-Tabar s 25 volume history, which ends roughly around the year 950. These are accessible from the class website. Use these volumes to mine for information. Students may consult me at any time for help with papers. If you are struggling for a topic see the professor or peruse the Oxford Islamic Studies database found on the class website. Paper 2 For Paper 2, the student will select a topic appropriate for the years 1000-1517. Students may consult me at any time for help with papers. If you are struggling for a topic see the professor or peruse the Oxford Islamic Studies database found on the class website. Topics should be phrased in the form of a question which you wish to ask about the past, and handed in with at least four sources for approval on the date noted on the syllabus. Deadlines for exams and papers are inflexible. Any thing turned in after the appropriate date will lose 5 points per day late. Finally, plagiarism is unacceptable under any circumstance and will result in automatic failure of the class and referral to the Academic Integrity Council. If you do not know what constitutes plagiarism find out! Ignorance is not an excuse. Map Quiz The map quiz will be a pop quiz. I will expect you to be able to identify the modern political geography as well as natural features and the political geography of the appropriate time period. In other words, you must know the current geography and the geography of the history we have covered to the day of the quiz, but don t worry about countries and events in between. Maps are available online as well as in the textbooks. 4 Midterm You will have a week to complete the midterm. Please turn it in to www.turnitin.com. You do not need to turn in a paper copy. It must be turned in by midnight of the due date. After that it is 5 points off per day. Class evaluations: Class evaluations at NGCSU are now conducted on-line through Banner. Evaluation of the class is considered a component of the course and students will not be permitted to access their course grade until the evaluation has been completed. The evaluations will be accessible beginning one week prior to Final Exam week. Specific instructions will be made available when the surveys are activated. Academic Integrity Policy: Honor Code: "On my honor, I will not lie, cheat, steal, plagiarize, evade the truth or tolerate those who do." Suspected violations of the Academic Integrity policy should be referred by students to the instructor. If the instructor concludes that a violation of the Academic Integrity policy has occurred, the instructor will either (1) penalize the student and file an incident report with the Academic Integrity Council or (2) refer the matter directly to the Academic Integrity Council. If an incident report is filed by the instructor, the instructor will review the completed report with the student and will request that the student sign the report as an indication that the student is aware of the contents of the report. Use of Turnitin.com and other plagiarism detection tools: Students agree that by taking this course all required papers may be subjected to anti-plagiarism review through services such as turnitin.com or search engines (Google for example). Submitted papers will be included as source documents in a reference database solely for the purpose of detecting plagiarism. Use of turnitin.com is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Use posted on the website. Accommodation for Students with Disabilities: North Georgia College & State University (NGCSU) is committed to the full inclusion of individuals with disabilities and to the principle of individual rights and responsibilities. To that end, the policies and procedures of NGCSU reasonably ensure that a person with a disability is not, on the basis of that disability, denied full and equal access to and the enjoyment of academic programs and co-curricular activities or otherwise is subjected to discrimination in such programs and activities. The policies for access by individuals with disabilities at NGCSU are designed to ensure full compliance with all pertinent federal and state legislation, specifically to include Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. To receive disability accommodations, the student should contact the Coordinator of Disability Resources, Office of Academic Support Programs, Room 207 Barnes Hall. Approval of reasonable accommodations will be made on a case-by-case basis. 5
