MUMH GreetingLine 1600 Section: 002 October 8th 2007 Essay 1 Well-Blended Rock Music Throughout time, I have been able to recognize that music is a very broad subject. Most sources will categorize music in about five categories or less. These sources usually, but not always, keep the categories to alternative, country, classical, dance, hiphop/rap, pop, rock, jazz, and blues. In my opinion, music is much deeper than that. Being placed into a few vague categories does not really tell much about a musician. You can have two labeled "Rock" bands be completely different from each other. I went to see a rock band, Miser, and learned they are very unique. They are not your typical "Rock" band. They portray qualities that you would never expect to see or hear at a concert. Miser is local rock band out of Dallas, Texas. All of the band members started off in a different band at beginning of their careers. Throughout time, Miser was formed, consisting of very experienced members. I would not feel comfortable saying the style or type of Miser is rock. Although, I would feel comfortable saying it is rock with twists and turns. One way you can distinguish Miser from any other rock band is the way they use simple, but well textured melodies. Even though the majority of their songs only consisted of two melodies (verse and chorus), they still managed to attract the listener's ears. Another way you could tell them apart is the extreme hooks that they incorporate in their lyrics. If you were to see Miser live, you would be able to tell that they spend some time on their lyrics. Miser is also known to stand out because of the re-making skills they have. This is something that many bands will try but not be successful at. Miser was able GreetingLine MUMH 1600 Section: 002 October 8th 2007 Essay 1 to re-make a classic very well; they preformed their edition of "Zombie" originally by The Cranberries. Miser's audience would consist of many people. They are a rock and band, rock is generally tolerated very well among many people. The intended audience could range anywhere from sixteen to thirty years of age and is most likely college students. They have a heavy-hitting rock sound that appeals to many college students. During the performance, I noticed they had a wide variety of melodies in their songs. They did not have the same melodies in every song with different lyrics. They did a great job of mixing up the melodies. They also had a wide variety of lyrics. Sometimes you will notice that bands don't really change up the lyrics to their song They will sing about the same thing in all of their songs. Miser did a very good job at changing it up. This is one reason why they could appeal to college students so much. They possess a good variety, which is something that many college students want. I believe that is the strongest expectation that their target audience holds and they were successful at meeting it. Another unique characteristic of Miser is they have a moving message in all of their songs. You can tell that they put a lot of thought into their lyrics and that they are trying to give out that moving message. Many people will like a song much more if they are able to relate to it. I believe there is some strange connection between the lyrics of a song and your feelings. Some bands will try to "interact" with the audience too much. There should be some connection there, but not to the point where you feel like you have to participate with them. Miser had a perfect connection with the audience. It was not too much, but not GreetingLine MUMH 1600 Section: 002 October 8th 2007 Essay 1 too little. I feel when there is too much connection, you are unable to enjoy the music because the association you have with the band takes over. Going to see Miser was a performance that I really enjoyed. I believe they are a great rock band that possesses many unique characteristics that make them different from everyone else.
