Warner Stephanie RELIGION 175: Introduction to the Critical Study of Biblical Literature Critical Reading Questions #1 Critical Reading Text: Selections from Benedict Spinoza and Ernst Troeltsch (on Blackboard) Instructions: The following questions are designed to help you discovery some of the most important points in your reading selections. The questions follow the basic course of the two articles. (1) Why does Spinoza restrict the interpretation of scripture to only what can be established clearly in the original author's intention and meaning? Spinoza restricts the interpretation of scripture to only what can be established clearly in the original author's intention and meaning so human emotions and beliefs do not get mixed into the meaning. Another reason Spinoza restricts the interpretation of scripture is because some of the events in the bible are beyond human understanding. (2) What does Spinoza say we must employ above all else to arrive at a proper interpretation of an ancient document? That knowledge Scripture of must be obtained from Scripture alone. (3) What does Spinoza mean by the interpretation of the scriptures in the "natural light of reason"? He means that when you are interpreting Scripture but Scripture alone you are using reasoning that is only the most pure because you are interpreting it without having any other influencing factors. (4) What does Troeltsch mean when he uses the phrase "the historical mode of thought"? This is the old way of thinking and interpreting scripture. (5) What are the three fundamental constituents of the historical method? The habituation on principle to historical criticism, the importance of analogy, and the mutual interrelation of all historical developments are the three fundamental constituents of the historical method. (6) According to Troeltsch what mechanism allows us in the present to hypothesize about the probable nature of events in the past? Historical method allows us in the present to hypothesize about the probably nature of events in the past.
