Course Number: Professional Studies (PROF) 696 Title: Research Methods Units: 3 Prerequisites: PROF 421 or equivalent Course Classification: 3 units C/S 5 Faculty: The course will be taught by qualified instructors on the Professional Studies faculty Terms Offered: Fall, Spring Prepared by: Faculty Date of submission/revision: Spring, 2004 II. Catalog Description PROF 696. Research Methods (3) Prerequisite: PROF 421 or equivalent. Selecting, defining and presenting methods of research; demonstration of research theory to problem solution. Letter grade only (A-F). III. Expected Outcomes At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to: A. B. C. D. E. F. G. H. Effectively use the university library and its resources, including electronic data bases. Effectively use community resources related to research materials. Critique (critically analyze) theses, dissertations, projects, and other research. Create written outlines of research paradigms. Devise and critique theoretical models for research. Select and use common research methods appropriate to various Cite problems. and explain trends, problems, and areas of concern that require additional research. Given a problem area and deduced or developed hypotheses, design an appropriate research strategy. I. Produce written distillations of research problems and syntheses. J. Reduce conceptualizations to researchable problems. L. Given a format and assistance in selecting the problem area, produce a written a research report. IV. Course Outline: The content of the course will be dependent on the issues and problems confronting occupational education, individual students in the class, faculty teaching the course, and the class as a whole. V. Methods of Presentation: VI. Methods of Evaluation A. Qualities of oral discussion contributions. B. Quality of demonstrated ability to perceive and cite relationships, concepts, principles, theories, etc. C.
