Photography P Special Features Photography College of Arts and Letters Bachelor of Arts PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Bachelor of Arts in Photography is a joint major that prepares students to enter one of the exciting professional photographic fields. By combining courses from the Art Department and the Department of Design, as well as support classes in Journalism and Business, the program equips students aesthetically, technically, and professionally for a future in photography. The program has a curricular emphasis on the visual arts, integrating areas that are particularly valuable to those considering a professional photographic career or continuing in a graduate program. The major is structured to provide students with the skills and understanding to enable them to create images that will stand out among the profusion of photographs in the commercial, editorial or fine art arenas. Sacramento State is uniquely positioned to offer students strong photographic curricula, internships and professional connections. Because of its location in the state capital, students may complete fieldwork with state agencies, museums, professional associations, and news organizations. Two campus galleries regularly exhibit student work: the Design Gallery on the 4th floor of Mariposa Hall and the Witt Gallery in Kadema Hall. The Departments of Art and of Design both offer student scholarships. Among the facilities available for photography students is a large digital lab furnished with Macintosh computers, Epson printers, film, and flat bed scanners. There is also an alternative process lab for platinum/palladium printing, a well equipped darkroom with 4x5 black and white and color enlarging stations, a Hope 20 color print processor, Wing Lynch film processor, and studio shooting facilities. Digital Imaging. Acquaints students with digital photographic equipment and techniques. Lecture and demonstrations will cover hardware (cameras, computers, scanners and printers) and software used to create digital images. Ethical and legal issue will be discussed. Portfolio of digital photographs created in the computer lab required. Units: 3.0. PHOT 40. Basic Techniques of Photography. Introduction to basic camera and darkroom techniques. Concepts of visual organization, design and using light effectively are emphasized. Lecture two hours; laboratory three hours. Units: 3.0. Upper Division Courses PHOT 102. Photography, a Social History. Examines photographic vision and the impact of the medium on society through readings by both photographers and photographic critics. Establishes the importance of photography as a contemporary medium, explores the development of photographic vision the and relationship between photographs and cultural events. Lecture/discussion. Units: 3.0. PHOT 111. Intermediate Digital Imaging. Covers intermediate to advanced concepts and techniques in computer image processing, providing students with the ability to explore both new and previously mastered software and hardware applications. Emphasis is on using digital techniques to create and print effective and imaginative photographs. Lectures and demonstrations cover capture, manipulation, color management and pre-press techniques for a variety of output devices. Lecture two hours; laboratory two hours. Prerequisite: PHOT 11, equivalent course or instructor permission. Units: 3.0. PHOT 135. Introduction to Photojournalism. Familiarizes students with the materials, techniques and approach of contemporary photojournalists in newspapers, magazines and related publications. Editorial criteria, page layout, copyright and ethics are emphasized. Photographs will be made with film or digital cameras and processed on the computer. Prerequisite: PHOT 40 or equivalent. Units: 3.0. PHOT 138. Color Photography A. Explores the theory and practice of color photographic vision, as applied to digital and film-based materials. Lecture topics will include: color theory, photographic optics, macro photography, visual concepts for multi-image presentation, color temperature white balance, and photographic vision. Students will present a final portfolio of images and program their own still images into a finished visual and audio presentation. Lecture two hours; laboratory two hours. Prerequisite: PHOT 11 or equivalent. Units: 3.0. California State University, Sacramento PHOT 141. Intermediate Photography, Black and White. Theory and practice of techniques applicable to the production of black and white photographs. Concentration on the Zone System. Lecture one hour; laboratory four hours. Prerequisite: PHOT 40. Units: 3.0. PHOT 143A. Intermediate Photography, Color. Theory and practice of techniques of color photography. The production of color negatives and color prints. Lecture one hour; laboratory four hours. Prerequisite: PHOT 40. Units: 3.0. PHOT 148. Artificial Light Photography. Commercially oriented with assignments covering such topics as food, fashion and products photographed with artificial light in the studio and on location. Business practices in commercial and editorial photography will be discussed. Students are expected to become visually and technically competent with artificial light sources. Lecture one hour; laboratory four hours. Prerequisite: PHOT 141, PHOT 138 or PHOT 143A. Units: 3.0. PHOT 150. Senior Portfolio. Develops a body of work to be used in approaching the job market or graduate school. The required final portfolio of images will reflect the student s photographic education, experience and area of expertise. The content and format of this portfolio will depend on the student s future academic or professional goals. Lecture one hour; laboratory three hours. Prerequisite: Senior status, PHOT 11, PHOT 138, PHOT 143A or PHOT 148. Units: 3.0. PHOT 155. Advanced Photography. Explores both color and black and white photographic images on an advanced level. Lectures cover concepts in: camera use, darkroom techniques, and natural and artificial light, all of which articulate with digital applications. Photographs may be created with large or small format cameras. Students must demonstrate a high level of technical proficiency and visual awareness and be able to pursue a definite photographic direction, which can be centered on both personal vision and professional portfolio preparation. Lecture one hour; laboratory four hours. Prerequisite: PHOT 141. Units: 3.0. PHOT 160. Documentary Photography. Explores documentary photojournalism in a social context. The student is required to produce a series of documentary projects suitable for publication. Emphasis is placed on documenting people in their relationships with others and their environment. The photographer must show a high level of visual awareness, technical proficiency and the ability to pursue a definite photographic direction. Lecture one hour; laboratory four hours. Prerequisite: PHOT 141. Units: 3.0. PHOT 195. Internship in Photography. Directed observation and work experience with public agencies, organizations, publications, design or photography studios. Fieldwork is offered to give students experience, personal contacts and orientation in the area of professional photography. Supervision is provided by faculty and the cooperating community employer. Students are required to maintain a detailed record of activities and report regularly to the supervising faculty member. To receive credit the selected activity must be approved prior to adding the course. Ten hours weekly. Prerequisite: A minimum of two upper division photography courses. Graded: Credit / No Credit. Units: 3.0. PHOT 196. Experimental Offerings in Photography. Undergraduate course in photography will be scheduled as needed. Units: 2.0-3.0. PHOT 199. Special Problems. Individual projects or directed readings in photography. Open to students who are working at an advanced level of photography and competent to carry on individual work. Graded: Credit / No Credit.
