316: COMM/LTWR Student Newspaper Spring 2006 - Tuesdays 5 9:45 pm SCI2 - 302 Anthony P. Hurst CRA 6128 750-8078 e-mail: ahurst@csusm.edu Office Hours: Wednesday 10-noon; Thursday 9-9:45 am; or by appointment. Required Texts The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law (2004) You will also be assigned readings from various sources (print and electronic). Course Description (taken from the CSUSM General Catalog 2004-2006) A workshop for students interested in practicing writing and reportage. Students will meet for one (1) hour of classroom lecture and participate in four (4) hours of journalism activities, including but not limited to, the school newspaper. May be repeated for a total of nine (9) units, but no more than six units may be applied toward the COMM major. Also offered as LTWR 316. Students may not receive credit for both. Prerequisite: GEW 101. (MC) Course Objectives The primary objective of this course is to introduce students to news reporting and writing so that students in the class can contribute to the successful publication of The Pride during the Spring 2006 semester. Specifically, upon completion of the course each of you should be able to do the following: 1. Identify the important elements of a news story. 2. Use the AP stylebook correctly. 3. Identify key ideas and concepts from multiple topics in print journalism. Course Requirements and Evaluation There will be a midterm and final exam (25% each). The exams will cover material from the lectures and readings. In addition to the exams, we will conduct in-class activities that will be turned in at the end of the class period. You will be informed during the class how each will be evaluated. This will be worth 25% of your final grade. Finally, 25% of your final grade will be based on your energy you bring to the class AS WELL AS the paper. There are plenty of ways to contribute to the publication, so find ways to do so. The success of a course depends on a substantial effort from BOTH instructor and student. My expectations for students are that (a) you to complete reading and writing assignments when they are due, (b) you treat your peers with the respect they deserve, and (c) you stay focused while you are in the class there will be no class assignments outside of our Tuesday meeting, so the time we spend in class is to be taken seriously. You can expect me to (a) start class on time, (b) try to incorporate multiple methods for presenting material, (c) rely heavily on contemporary social issues. The distribution of points will be as follows: 2 tests participation class activities Total CAVEATS The following are necessary to earn a specific grade: In order to earn a C, students must submit at least 6 stories to the editorial staff all six can be individually authored stories, or you can submit 3 individual and 3 group stories In order to earn a B, students must submit at least 8 stories to the editorial staff all eight can be individually authored stories, or you can submit 4 individual and 4 group stories In order to earn an A, students must submit least at 11 stories to the editorial staff all eleven can be individually authored stories, or you can submit 6 individual and 5 group stories NOTE: you cannot turn in more than two of these in the last week of class, so plan ahead. Instructional Policies 1. Your attendance (both physical and psychological) is important to the success of this course. 2. This class will start on time. If you cannot be on time, please respect the other students in the course by quietly taking a seat in the back. 3. Tests can be rescheduled under extraordinary circumstances and only if cleared with me in advance. Academic Misconduct Plagiarism is presenting someone else s words or ideas as your own, whether in writing or in speaking. Any instructor who suspects you of plagiarism or cheating must inform you of the allegation. If the evidence suggests that you are guilty, the instructor will forward the charge to a department chair. If it is unclear to you how to properly cite a source, please contact me so that we may work out the problem in advance. For further details on CSUSM academic misconduct policy, please consult the Student Affairs section of the University website. You will find important information about student policies at this site. The site also contains information on FERPA, which outlines your academic privacy rights. This course requires class discussion, where you will be sharing ideas and opinions with 50% 25% 25% 100% others in the classroom. Beyond this, however, your academic achievement in the course is a private matter and cannot be discussed with anyone without your permission, and I take this very seriously. Therefore, if you would like a recommendation for employment you must submit written permission to me before I can write such a recommendation. If you have a grievance with any course material or my behavior, please start by addressing it with me first. If this does not resolve the issue to your satisfaction, then you will be directed to the department chair for resolution or further consideration with a higher university authority. Miscellaneous CSUSM and the Communication department both take the issue of sexual harassment very seriously. Behavior perceived to be sexually threatening or intimidating may constitute harassment; students should again consult the University website for detailed information on sexual harassment. Course Outline The general structure for each Tuesday evening class will be as follows: 5 pm 6 pm 7 pm Patrick and Editors meet with students/staff Lecture each week we will cover a different topic related to journalism Students will workshop on activity related to the prior lecture While it won t be a hard and fast rule to begin each section on the hour, this will be the basic breakdown of each class. I am not going to give specific dates for topics yet I ll try to adapt to the needs of the editors. However, some of the topics to be covered include: lead writing, interviewing, photojournalism, ethics, feature writing, sports writing, opinions, and critical reviews. This is not an exhaustive list.
