CONNECTICUT CENTRAL STATE UNIVERSITY Department of Health and Human Service Professions CNSL 532 Program Design in Student Services Spring, 2002 Instructor: Jane Fried Office: 217 Barnard Hall Office Hours: M 11-12 &1:30-3; T 2:30-3:30; Th 2-3:30 Phone # 860-832-2119; email friedj@ccsu.edu Course Description: Design of experiential education for adults in higher education including needs assessment, creation of developmental programs and learning communities, program implementation and evaluation. Prerequisite CNSL 530. Texts: Allen, K. & Cherrey, C. (2000) Systemic Leadership. Lanham, MD: American College Personnel Association Barr, M.& Dessler, M. (2000) (2nd ed.) The Handbook of Student Affairs Administration. San Francisco: Jossey Bass BaxterMagolda, M. ((2000) Teaching to Promote Intellectual and Personal Maturity. NDTA #82. San Francisco: Jossey Bass Fried, J. & Assoc. (1995) Shifting Paradigms in Student Affairs. Lanham, MD: American College Personnel Association Two additional readings are on reserve in the library, indicated as res on the syllabus. Students are expected to complete readings as of the date they appear on the syllabus so that the readings can be discussed in class. I suggest that you try to read ahead of the assignment dates during the early part of the semester since the end of the semester will require a lot of group work that is also quite time consuming. Course Objectives: 1. To study the philosophical foundations of higher education in the United States, including the relationship between identity development, cultural pluralism and education for citizenship in a democracy. 2. To learn the process of assessing student needs for developmental/experiential education; 3. To develop a plan for a student development education program that reflects competence in assessment of student and institutional needs, application of theory and assessment data to program design, program delivery and evaluation. 4. To articulate a vision of student development practice that reflects the realities of higher education in the 21st century. Course Requirements : CSNL 532/Sp2001/syllabus 1 1. Students are expected to become familiar with the two major journals in the field, The Journal of College Student Development and the NASPA Journal, as well as The Chronicle of Higher Education. In addition, there are numerous journals which cover higher education from a broader perspective. The best database to use in searching educational information is ERIC. The most comprehensive student affairs index is Higher Educational Abstracts. The most comprehensive website for student affairs information is StudentAffairs.com.. 2. In all written documents APA format is mandatory. A summary of standard APA style and procedures for citation, including information obtained from electronic sources, can be obtained at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/files/34.htm. A complete copy of the APA style manual (4th ed.) is available in my office and in the reference room in the library. 3. A Curriculum for Student Development Education . This is a position paper you will write describing the connections between theory practice and on the topic identified in the title. How does our profession contribute to a student s college education? What do you believe that we should be helping students to learn throughout their college career? Why do you believe that these particular things are important to learn, and how will they contribute to a student s ability to live a satisfying and productive life? How should we organize ourselves to insure that students master the curriculum we offer? We will discuss various perspectives on this issue for the first three weeks of the semester. A position paper must be logical, well-organized and filled with factual information which supports whatever positions you take on this topic. The paper will be evaluated from a contextual knowing perspective, according to your ability to organize information to support your point of view. Your paper addresses an ill-structured problem. Due February 19 30% 4. Working in groups of three or four, you will develop a plan for a student development program to be implemented on a campus which you will create and describe. Your plan will clearly describe the goals of the educational program, along with methods for assessing the need for this program and means for evaluating what the program has accomplished. The final product of your program development activity will include a campus description, including a description of the campus, its mission and the student body, an assessment plan, a program plan, implementation procedures and an evaluation plan. Your project will be submitted in phases so that you can receive ungraded feedback as you work. The project will be graded as a whole after you make your class presentation and turn in your final copy. Everyone in the group will receive the same grade. One of your early tasks will be to divide the labor so that each person carries her or his fair share of the load. If your group begins to feel as if things are not working smoothly, you are to contact me and arrange a group meeting immediately in order to avoid unfairness and ineffective use of group time. 40% 3.
