Course Number: ENG 590 Fall 2008 Course Title: Doctoral Seminar in Composition and Rhetoric Professor: Dr. Amy Robillard Credit Hours: 4 Meeting Time: W 5:30-9:20 Meeting Place: STV 410 Reference Number: 302451 Rhetorics of Work in Composition Studies REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS: Bousquet, Marc, Tony Scott, and Leo Parascondola, ed. Tenured Bosses and Disposable Teachers: Writing Instruction in the Managed University. Carbondale: southern illinois UP, 2004. Crowley, Sharon. Composition in the University. Williams, Bronwyn T. Identity Papers: Literacy and Power in Higher Education. Logan: Utah State U P, 2005. DESCRIPTION OF COURSE: In this seminar we will work to understand the field of composition and rhetoric by studying the various rhetorics of work circulating in its disciplinary discourses. We will examine what it means to define writing as work, but also the ways the field defines teaching, service, administration, scholarship, and research as work. We ll talk about who s working researchers, teachers, students, administrators doing what work publishing, teaching, writing, attending conferences to what ends. We ll consider the increasing corporatization of the university, the function of writing in an undergraduate education, and the problematic binary that separates the intellectual from the instrumental. FORMAT OF COURSE: This seminar will be part discussion, part student presentations, and part writing workshop. Student responsibilities include weekly writing, a presentation, leading class discussion, a midterm exam, and a polished seminar paper.
