To be considered for the Apparel Design Field Experience Program, you must have the necessary prerequisites of: 1. cumulative GPA of 2.0 2. TC 225, 231, 245, 278 & 311 (prior to Field Experience) B. To gain acceptance in the TC 470C program, you must: 1) submit application, rsum, and objectives to Faculty Coordinator 2) secure a work position where the company is acceptable to the Faculty Coordinator and will agree to participate in the Program 3) attend the "kick-off" seminar during Dead Week prior to Field Experience. II. Enrollment: A. Register for TC 470C (2 to 6 credits) internship. The Continuing Education Form is your registration. Turn in to Ruth Glock. B. Complete your "Personal Objectives" for your Field Experience. Be sure to keep a copy so you can revise them when you start the internship. C. Submit a copy of your rsum. Schedule: A. Weekly reports should be postmarked no later than the Monday following each week of work beginning with the first week. Forms are in the back of this packet. Late reports and projects will be penalized. Reports can be sent electronically or by regular mail. Purchase and Read: Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen Covey. One page of the weekly reports relates to this book. Evaluation and grading: Your course grade will be determined as follows: A. Employer's evaluation of your job performance and attitude. Give your supervisor the "Student Rating Form" about two weeks prior to the end of your internship. Ask her/him to fill it out, discuss it with you, and (you) return the form to Ruth Glock by Friday of your last week. It is your responsibility to see that this procedure is followed. B. Field experience Projects, Weekly Reports, and Supplementary Activities will be graded on: Reflections of experiences Depth of content III. IV. V. C. D. E. F. Integration of information Evaluation and Analysis Organization Grammar and spelling Meeting deadlines Weekly Reports Weekly reports should include analysis of your working experiences, analysis of workplace interactions and activities based on Stephen Covey's book - Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Students should share concerns with the coordinator so that she can assist you in solving problems that may arise. Projects Projects should relate to the internship activities. Suggestions are provided later in this packet, but some of the best projects are suggested by your managers. You do not have to follow the packet. If project deadlines need to be different, let me know at the start, not the week it is due. Attainment of Objectives Evaluation should be specific to each objective that you originally set, both in terms of your performance and the factors of your work situation that helped and/or hindered it. Presentation of experiences Students will develop a portfolio presentation of their learning experiences. Document the learning experiences and activities of your internship. Use photos, charts, analyses, diagrams, captions, projects, etc., to develop a professional presentation of your internship for future employers. This should be a visual presentation of highlights not a journal. VI. Faculty Coordinator's Duties: A. Act as consultant for student, either by phone or by email. B. Give guidance and approval in establishing project. C. Evaluate projects, weekly reports, and other written materials. D. If deemed necessary (or requested by the student), consult company personnel about the student's progress, situation, etc. E. Assign grades. NOTE: Throughout the period of your Field Experience, remember that this is NOT an ordinary job. A. You represent Iowa State University in a business environment; B. You are a Textiles and Clothing student enrolled in an off-campus course. C. Professional behavior is required throughout the internship. EXPERIMENT, ASK QUESTIONS, LEARN A LOT, HAVE FUN, AND............ ALWAYS BE PROFESSIONAL! TC 470 POLICY REGARDING LETTER GRADE 1. A letter grade will be issued by the Field Experience Coordinator according to the following criteria: 1) satisfactory completion of the 10 to 12 week work period; and 2) receipt by the Coordinator of all evaluation materials from the employer and the student. 3) Completion of all requirements An N grade will be turned in at the end of the session. This will be removed once the Field Experience, evaluations, closure interview, and obligations are completed. An "I" (incomplete) may be issued by the Coordinator and at the Coordinator's discretion where an individual is unable to satisfy the criteria in Policy 1 (above) due to circumstances beyond the student's control. If the student is responsible for any delays which result in the inability to satisfy the criteria in Policy 1 (above), the Coordinator may issue an "I", lower the student's grade, or both. Any student who is terminated by the company for dishonesty or infraction of company policy during the 10 to 12 week period risks failure of TC 470. Any student who quits the company during the 10 to 12 week period or does not give appropriate notice regarding resignation beyond that period likewise risks failure of TC 470. Any student who has been allowed to participate on an "excelled" basis (such as a graduating senior) must abide by all of the above policies and any additional conditions agreed upon by the student and the Coordinator during the student's Field Experience Program. In all circumstances, it will be the student's role to meet all deadlines and interact with company personnel. Even though students are usually assigned to one area, it is their responsibility to gain knowledge of other areas of the firm. These supplementary activities should help students meet goals for their program, since it is up to the student to make the most of their work experience. Supervisors may have additional suggestions to include. Part I relates to the firms mission, organization, and product line. This should be completed and sent in by the end of week #2. Part II should be worked on during the 10 weeks of the internship and turned in with the last reports. I. Introduction to the firm. A. What is firm's mission? B. What is the general organization of the firm? C. What is the relationship of this unit of the firm to the rest of the organization? D. What is the firm's general business philosophy and strategy? E. Describe the firm's product line target market. F. What are potential career paths in this firm? II. Become acquainted with the supporting divisions of the firm. When you have completed an activity, enter the date and some notes next to it. A. For any given week, develop a work schedule for the salespeople and a location with which you are somewhat familiar. B. Have your supervisor critique this schedule, answering as many of the following questions as possible (and any others that you might have in addition): *How many full-time, part-time, and extra people are needed? *How many is the most hours an employee can work each week? *Will the company pay overtime? *What (if any) "personal" considerations are made in scheduling (i.e. ability, preference, seniority, etc.)? *What would be a fair estimate of the total payroll (in dollars) for this schedule? *How does this supervisor measure employee sales productivity (i.e. sales cost, dollars per hour, etc.)-- if at all? *If you were a full-time permanent sales associate, what factors would the company consider in giving you wage increases? Are there promotion possibilities for sales associates? *What else would your supervisor recommend you need to know to become proficient at scheduling? C. Analysis of schedule. Did it work? Why? 2. Merchandise Layout A. Choose one of the locations in which you have worked (or are working) and sketch the floor layout-- identify entrances and exits, cash register stands, fitting rooms, etc., as well as the various classifications of merchandise. B. Analyze the placement and presentation of merchandise in regard to the following: 1. Visual impact 2. Location of hot sellers, basics, markdowns, etc. 3. Customer convenience 4. Prevention of theft C. In evaluation of "B" above, do you think there are any specific ways in those four areas that your company might improve this location? D. What is the size of this location in square feet? What is the approximate sales volume of this location on an annual basis? What is the dollars per square foot, then, for this location on an annual basis? How does this location compare to others within the company in this area of analysis? E. Analyze the effectiveness of the layout. How could it be improved? 3. Advertising Analysis A. Select an ad run by the company for which you work (preferably from your specific department, store, or other location). B. Identify the medium used-- newspaper, radio, television, direct mail, other. C. Give a complete description of the item(s) advertised, price(s) of these items, etc. To what target customers is the ad directed? What was the cost of this ad? Were there vendor co-op dollars available for this ad? D. For newspaper, direct mail: What was the ad size, rate? Describe the major parts of the ad (headline, illustration, bodycopy, layout, and identification), and include a tear sheet. For radio, television: What was frequency the of broadcast? Include a description of the script, music, etc. E. How well did company behavior "support" this ad? Analyze: 1) quantity and display of merchandise. 2) awareness and effectiveness of sales staff. 3) sales results. 4) overall cost effectiveness of the ad. 4. Shortage Control Measures A. Discuss the three areas of loss prevention (paper error, internal theft, and shoplifting) in terms of your company's policies and procedures. (Example: * What is the procedure used by your company for receiving and marking merchandise? What checks are incorporated in the process to minimize shortage? * What measures are taken for security in your store? * What training is given employees to prevent shoplifting? * Etc. Be thorough! B. What weaknesses do you see in your company's approach to shortage control? Suggest ways the company might improve. 5. Other Possibilities (require Faculty Coordinator approval): # Sales Volume Analysis (history, trends, projections) # Sales Productivity Analysis (sales cost, dollars per hour, etc.) # Visual Display Analysis (department stores primarily) # Territory/Key Accounts Analysis (for sales rep positions) # Career Opportunities Analysis (within companies providing several options) TC 470I OPTIONS for PROJECT #3 Project #3 should be... ... the most complete and comprehensive of the three projects. (Project #1 and #2 are really "reports" and are intended to reflect analysis of specific activities within the organization.) Project #3 should explore a large topic in greater depth or develop evaluations or comparisons of the organization with the "outside" (see examples below). ... well-researched and well-written. It should preferably be typed. It should be business report quality, without errors in grammar, typing, spelling, etc. ... a vehicle to present some of your academic activity to your supervisor or other company personnel with whom you wish to gain more visibility. (Be sure to make yourself a copy of this and any other project you wish to keep for the future.) ... clear in terms of statement of purpose, presentation of relevant materials, drawn conclusions, summary, recommendations, etc. (Yes, this is somewhat of a term paper!) ... your analysis, evaluation, etc.. in addition to factual material compiled. Can you use this project to give your employer more information than he/she has currently?
