2361 Drama History of the Theatre I Dr. SoRelle McLennan College Waco, TX Revised 08-09 ? ? ? Theatre History I DRAM 2361.01 Dr. Cynthia M. SoRelle 11:30-noon, 1:30-2:30 MWF Fine Arts 105 B 2:00-3:00 p.m. TTH 254.299.8101 csorelle@mclennan.edu Required Course Text: Oscar G. Brockett, History of the Theatre, 9th edition (2003) or 10th edition (2008). Blackboard online course support module (access via banner on McLennan website) Supporting Web site: http://www.ablongman.com/html/brockett9e/ The web site supporting your theatre history text provides acceptable research hyperlinks for you to use when studying or researching for class assignments. Each chapter has a list of available research sites, and I have included many links via the Theatre History Blackboard module. This course introduces the student to the history of the theatre from the earliest times to the seventeenth century. Although selective emphasis is placed on eastern theatrical traditions, the majority of our time will be spent learning about western theatre as it evolved in Europe and Great Britain. We'll examine the history of performance and performers, plays and playwrights, theatres and architects, design and designers, theory and theorists. By the end of the semester, you should have a better grasp of how theatre functioned as a social, cultural, political, religious, aesthetic/artistic and entertainment institution in the periods under study. We will study theatre both vertically (time period by time period/geographic region by geographic region) and horizontally (tracing the development of acting, playwriting, playing spaces, etc., across the periods under study). Our point of view will be dramaturgical, i.e., what one must know to function as a practicing artist in the theatre. This is a writing intensive course and you are required to take notes in class. COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. You should gain some understanding of the following literary/historic periods as they relate to theatre and dramatic literature: Prehistory, Early Egypt, Classical and Hellenistic Greece, Rome, the Eastern Empire, Medieval England and Europe, the Renaissance, Neoclassicism, and Elizabethan (Shakespearean) England. 2. You should become familiar with representative plays from the periods under study, including the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Hrosvitha, Ben Jonson, Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare, Moli re, Jean Racine, etc. 3. You should be able to recognize production styles, e.g., scenic, costume, and lighting practices, from the periods under study. 4. You should develop your ability to relate theatre aesthetics and philosophies to the historical events, developments, and contexts that helped to shape art in each age. 5. You should enhance both your research skills and in-depth theatrical knowledge by preparing and delivering a topical brief (in both written and oral form) in class. 6. You should demonstrate writing competence through cogent exam essays and identifications. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 1. Please attend class regularly and arrive on time. According to official campus policy, students, whether present or absent, are responsible for all material presented or assigned for a course and will be held accountable for such materials in the determination of course grades. If you miss more than four classes, expect a letter grade reduction on your final average. If possible, I would appreciate knowing ahead of time if you know that you will need to miss class. Regular fall semester classes end on Friday, December 5, 2008. The final exam period for this class is scheduled for Tuesday, December 9, 9:35-11:35 a.m. (Your final exam is not cumulative; you will take exam #4 at this time.) 2. We will read and discuss representative plays as assigned from the time periods studied. Each student should select a play and prepare a typed analysis according to the guidelines outlined on the Play Report Assignment Sheet. This assignment will account for 10% of the final grade. 3. Each student (or student group) will select one topic from the periods examined and present a 6-10 page brief on that subject. The brief should be typed and should include a list of works consulted. The brief will be presented orally. (A sample brief will be provided.) This assignment will account for 30% of the final grade. 1. Each student will be expected to take four essay (blue book) exams, for which study aids will be provided. The three highest exam grades will be counted and each will account for 20% of the course grade. You must, however, take all four exams to accrue this benefit. I'll make every effort to schedule around major theatre production times; refer to the course calendar for approximate exam dates. If you come to class and keep up with the readings, you will be successful on exams. Reviewing with a good study group is the most effective way to prepare for an exam. Please bring four blue books to class by the end of the first class week. 5. A significant penalty will be assessed for late work. No more than one assignment/exam may be completed or turned in late during the semester. Missed exams will be made up at the Testing Center (3rd floor, Student Center, 299.8453) and you must do so within the time period specified by your professor. Fall testing hours are Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. 1. All written assignments must be and typed you will utilize Internet resources on a restricted basis for this course. If you need access to a computer, please use the open access computers in the Learning Technology Center to complete your work. Laptops are also available for checkout in the building. Your student fees pay for these facilities. Take your Highlander card and a floppy disk. Assignments submitted by e-mail attachment should be formatted in Microsoft Word. Do not send documents in WordPerfect or MS Works. I encourage you to communicate with me via e-mail at csorelle@mclennan.edu. You are welcome in my office as well. 7. Academic honesty is expected from every student. The penalty for plagiarism on a written assignment (play report, brief, take-home or in-class essay) is zero points for the entire assignment. A second incident will result in failure of the class. If you have questions about what constitutes plagiarism, please seek my advice. 8. In accordance with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the regulations published by the United States Department of Justice 28 C.F.R. 35.107(a), designated ADA co-coordinators, Dr. Johnette McKown, Executive Vice President and Dr. Lynn Abernathy, Vice President, Student Services shall be responsible for coordinating the College s efforts to comply with and carry out its responsibilities under ADA. Students with disabilities requiring physical, classroom, or testing accommodations should contact Mr. Marcus Sweatt, Disabilities Specialist, at 299-8122 or msweatt@mclennan.edu.
