Critical thinking skills will be emphasized by the use of exercises which require applying and analyzing the psychological theories, research, and perspectives that provide insight into her/his own motives and behaviors. UNITS: FACE TO FACE: 3 Hours Per Week: Lecture: 3 Laboratory: Clinic/Field: DISTANCE EDUCATION: 3 ENTRY LEVEL SKILLS, PRE-REQUISITES, CO-REQUISITES AND ADVISORIES: Corequisiste: ENG 099 eligibility OBJECTIVES and LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to: 1. [Note: the following skills use the term behavior in the broadest sense to refer to all various wordings for the basic subject matter of psychology.] Identify the basic subject matter of psychology even though it may be discussed in differing terminology (such as "behavior", "behavior and mental processes", and "emotions, actions and thoughts"). 2. Identify the major people and historical events important to the study of psychology. 3. Compare and contrast the major schools of thought in contemporary psychology, including the basic assumptions underlying each major school of thought. 4. Identify the basic process of scientific experimentation, and be able to identify errors in scientific research and the problems caused by those errors. 5. Identify the characteristics of a scientific explanation, identify the characteristics of pseudo explanations, and state the consequences of believing in pseudo explanations. 6. Identify the role of genetics in behavior as setting both the limits and potential for behavior, and how genetics sets the role for how experiences can influence behavior. 7. Identify the major neural and non-neural means of communication within the body. 8. Describe the anatomy and functions of the major structures of the nervous system, including interrelationships with specific behaviors COURSE OUTLINE TEMPLATE REV 2/19/08 PSY 101: General Psychology Page of 3 5 COURSE OUTLINE AND SCOPE: 1. Outline of Topics or Content: The following topics are included in the framework of the course but are not intended as limits on content. The order of presentation and relative emphasis will vary with each instructor. The presentation of topics may vary, depending on the test, materials, and the instructor's discretion. Suggested topics are as follows: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) 10) 11) The Scope, Goals, and Methods of Psychology Physical Foundations of Human Behavior Learning, Memory, Language Thinking and Problem solving Intelligence and the measurement of individual differences The Senses and Perception Emotions, Drives, and Motives Frustration, Conflict, Anxiety, and Stress: Successful and Questionable methods of coping Abnormal Psychology Personality and Psychotherapy Human Development Social Psychology 2. Examples of Reading Assignments: Reading assignments are required and may include but, are not limited to, the following: Psychology 101 may be taught using such readings resources as standard textbooks, journal articles, or other reading assignments at the appropriate collegiate level, subject to approval by the department chairperson in consultation with the instructor. Examples of Writing Assignments: Writing assignments are required and may include, but are not limited to, the following: Writing skills shall be demonstrated on tests and/or written projects such as term papers and research reports. 5. Appropriate Assignments to be completed outside of class: Outside assignments may include, but are not limited to, the following: In addition to the reading assigned to students, audio-visual material, field trips, resource materials in the college library or the Learning Center, or other materials/activities may be assigned if deemed appropriate by the instructor and indicated in the course syllabus. 6. Appropriate Assignments that demonstrate critical thinking: Critical thinking assignments are required and may include, but are not limited to, the following: A psychological analysis of any of the topics listed in Section 1 above, as well as the analysis of personal experiences, significant problems of human behavior, and a critical evaluation of research in psychology may be required. 7. Indicate any assignments that are unique to the Distance Education mode of delivery: These students will be required to submit weekly or biweekly written assignments to encourage regular contact. METHOD OF EVALUATION FACE TO FACE: A student's grade will be based on multiple measures of performance. These methods may include, but are not limited to, the following: The student's grade will be determined by no less than two evaluation techniques, at least one of which must demonstrate writing skills. METHOD OF EVALUATION DISTANCE EDUCATION: The evaluation techniques will be the same as those used for the lecture students.
