The course covers the theory and practices of gas tungsten arc welding in all positions. The students will use TIG welding equipment to produce specified welds in all positions. The students will learn about the various types of equipment and safety practices and procedures. UNITS: 3 HOURS: Lecture: 2 Laboratory: 3 Lecture/Lab: Clinic/Field: REV 10/30/02 WEL 103, Basic Gas Tungsten Arc Page 2 of 3 ENTRY LEVEL SKILLS, PREREQUISITES, AND/OR COREQUISITES: None OBJECTIVES and LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to: 1. Explain the purposes of the various tungsten end shapes. 2. Demonstrate the proper method of reshaping tungsten electrodes. 3. Describe the advantages of using different shielding gases. 4. Explain the effect of thoria and zirconia on the performance of tungsten. 5. Demonstrate the correct way to set up gas tungsten arc welding equipment and operation. 6. Weld pads, butt, lap, T and V groove joints in all positions using mild, stainless steel and aluminum. 7. Describe, demonstrate the proper safety practices and protective equipment to be worn while performing the exercises. 8. Design, estimate the costs, and build a welding project. 9. Appropriate Assignments to be completed outside of class: Students will visit a construction site, fabricating shop or welding repair shop, and complete an observation worksheet. Topics on the worksheet include, but are not limited to: shop skills required, safety, wages, welding process, etc. 5. Appropriate Assignments that demonstrate critical thinking: project. Students will be required to demonstrate critical thinking and mastery of the welding process in the construction of a welding Assignments will depend on students welding skills and knowledge level to create, design and write.
