670: ACCTG AUDITING SEMINAR SPRING 2006 Office: SS2420 Phone: 619-594-6347 Office Hours: after class as time permits; virtual office hours Mon & Tues 0800-0900 using email/chat Class Time: 1600-1840 Thursdays SS 2514 COURSE MISSION: To help 670 students make audit judgments in a relatively complex setting. COURSE COMPETENCIES: A well educated accountant will possess BOTH technical knowledge, such as knowledge about auditing, AND other competencies that will enable them to work effectively. The latter include the following nine abilities which are developed in this course: Written Communication 1. Oral Communication 2. 3. Group and People Skills 4. 5. 6. Critical Thinking 7. 8 Working Under Pressure 9. Ability to present views in writing. Ability to present views through oral communication. Ability to listen effectively. Ability to understand group dynamics and work effectively with people. Ability to resolve conflict. Ability to organize and delegate tasks. Ability to solve diverse and unstructured problems. Ability to read, critique, and judge the value of written work. Ability to deal effectively with imposed pressure and deadlines. [Albrecht et. al., Issues in Accounting Education, Fall 1994, p. 408] COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. To increase your applications-level understanding of the fundamental concepts of audit/assurance services. 2. To expand coverage of selected topics presented in the first auditing course. 3. To introduce topics of current interest. 4. To discuss and analyze problematic situations so that you can better understand how to respond when faced with such situations in the future. 5. To increase your awareness to the key ethical issues that audit practitioners presently face. NOTE: This syllabus is subject to revision as deemed necessary. Modifications, if necessary, will be announced. Students absent from class are responsible for determining if any modifications were announced. ALSO: Please call me or see me individually if you are experiencing problems in this course that you do not believe you can deal with personally. I would like for every student to have a positive learning experience in this course. I will do everything I reasonably can to facilitate your learning experience. COURSE MATERIALS: The following case book is required: Beasley, Buckless, Glover, & Prawitt. Auditing Cases: An 1 Interactive Learning Approach, 3/e. I strongly recommend the text by Whittington/Pany entitled Principles of Auditing & Other Assurance Services, Updated 15th Edition (McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2006). Class notes on Blackboard. We will use blackboard extensively. Check frequently. ASSIGNMENTS AND CASES: CASES: You should prepare a typed write-up of each assigned case, unless otherwise instructed. You will turn it in at the end of the case discussion, and you are welcome to write notes on it. For individual cases, you may discuss the case assignments with each other prior to starting your individual solutions but an individual s final written solution should reflect only that person s actual work and judgments. Any case assignments which are copied from or unusually similar to another person will result in charges of academic misconduct against all students involved. No credit will be given for case assignments turned in later than their assigned date. In-class case work: Student teams will consist of 4-5 persons. Cases will sometimes be started and completed in class. From time to time, with or without announcement in advance, a visiting practitioner may visit our class and participate in class discussions. READINGS: Readings include relevant authoritative pronouncements and suggested articles as indicated in the schedule. GRADING: Grades will determined based on your relative performance on the following assignments: Assignment Final exam Class Participation Case Solution Write-Ups Group Cases Individual Case Total Percent 10 30 30 20 10 100 I assign a letter grade to your work and use the standard grade point scale (4.0 base) to average grades. It is principally your ranking in the class point distribution that will determine your final letter grade. I would expect that approximately 50% of the grades will be "A" or A- and 50% will be B" (+ or-). You can earn a grade lower than a "B-" if you really work at it! CLASS PARTICIPATION IS A STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY: This class will be conducted as graduate level course. I expect much student discussion during class. 2 This will require you to demonstrate your knowledge of the topics. The class schedule which follows contains a variety of case, reading, and research paper related assignments. Part of your education as an accounting professional is learning to accept and independently handle responsibility. If you do not understand what is expected of you in this course, ask me. Silence carries the presumption of understanding. Please understand that I respect the fact that you are adults and, by being in our graduate program, you are likely managing many responsibilities simultaneously, including jobs, family, and your classes.
