Always answer all within the context of the course. Give verbal answers concisely, but as completely as possible within the time constraint. With problems the reasoning must be clear from words and general principles, or from the sequence of equations; then by numbers, if required. If unsure about the questions, ask! 25pts I. MISCELLANEOUS Below, statements/exercises. For ITEMS WITH A BOLD NUMBER, ENTER on the ANSWER SHEET. For each, 1. choose by CIRCLING the BEST alternative from those given between the bold square brackets, OR 2. fill in the blanks; OR 3. give the information requested. In addition to what has been posted/handed out, this is for you to use as a GUIDE for studying!! NOT exhaustive, it does touch on most topics discussed in lecture/lab and contained in Unit Sheets 2 and 3 (you are NOT responsible for topics in the Unit sheets that we omitted). Many of the main topics subjects will be reviewed in Tues/Weds recitation. The exam will cover up to the lecture of past Thur (Nov 13) and what we may do in review/elaboration in Tues (Nov 18) lecture. -----------------------------------------------------Know (for some, be able to define) the following words/terms: kinematics, dynamics, FoR, coordinate system (including origin, axes), order of magnitude; direct proportion; imply, infer; magnitude, scalar, vector, component, component vector, <sp>, <v>, v, v, a , a ; force (and the proper verb, prepositions, and possessive pronouns appropriate in describing how a force workson an agent), N, lbs, weight; trajectory, centripetal, tangential; weight vs mass Two (independent) conditions for mechanical equilibrium; Be able to define all the many and varied concepts in kinematics in Unit sheets 2 and 3. Know which are vectors and which are scalars. Specifically, know the two kinds of change in motion that an S w/ nonzero acceleration. Be able to do kinematic graphs for 1-dim linear kinematics. Do problems of the sort in Units Sheets 2, HW #10, and the Free Fall lab. Be able to give Chens statements of Newtons Laws and relate them to all the kinematics we have done AND to Newtonian dynamics (e.g., know the relationship b/w the acceleration of an S and the net forces on it. VECTORS: State how we specify and represent vectors; state the various mathematical operations that involve vectors (e.g., ..., multiplying by a scalar (1/m), finding components, etc....) Be able to carry out the operations and the kinematics/dynamics illustrated in Units Sheet #03, HW#11, and in the force-table lab. DEMOS: Explain what happened in each of Chens demo, and what it was intended to illustrate / explain. Some specifics: A Newton (born __________ ! died ___________ ), whose Principia Mathematica was published in 1687, formulate the Law of Universal Gravitation as well as his __________ (give number) Laws of Motion. Give completely Chens statement verbal of the Law which is relevant to what happens in the case of Fnet = 0; when Fnet 0; when there are 2 objects interacting. B. In calculating mean kinematic quantities (e.g., <v>) the values of the various vs are weighted by what? ________________ . Using this concept of weighting, explain why an object that accelerates constantly from +10 mi/h to +50 mi/h will have an <v> of _____________ : C. In one of Chens demos, 21.5 _______ was the force _________ (give units) (give verb) __________ the earth (preposition) _____________ Chens Urone-text. When he it (text) UPWARD at constant velocity, (preposition) the F______ by the round scale ____ Urone was: __________. Fnet [ by ,of , on ] Urone = _____. (verb) (prepos.) (mag & dir.) TU PHYS 202 (hlc) 001-003 EX03help-08D November 15, 2008 Page 2 of 2 A. A 1500kg car is travelling at a constant 40 m/s on an Top view unbanked curved road. At some initial time, the car is going in some (to-be-specified) direction. At some (given) time later, the car is travelling at some somewhat different (to-be-specified) direction. 1. In the box, make a quick add/subtraction SKETCH to show vo , v, and then )v = v ! v0 . 2. Using the graph paper shown, explicitly indicate your choice of a scale that will make v0 at least 9cm long. Now make a careful vector diagram (with ruler/compass) of the combining of vectors that will yield )v. Express your final answer in the mag.-angle notation. 3. Now, calculate for that time interval the [ a , <a> ] of the C. 4. Finally calculate the <F> on the C. B. A very large 3.0 kg coconut, C, is located on a vertical line b/w 2 chimps playing tug-a-coconut in a tree. Chimp A pulls 8 on C with some unknown force; chimp B sitting on a branch below, pulls 9 with 40N. At the instant were considering, C has an instanta...
