STUDY SITE Anthropology 103 Winter 2009 DUE: Wednesday, January 14, 2009 Purpose: To use a contemporary example to give students experience observing and recording material remains that one day might be part of an archaeological site. What to do: 1) Pick a location outdoors where there are material remains (e.g., trash) on the ground. The area should be big enough to have sufficient artifacts to record but not so big that the project becomes overwhelming. As a rough guide, the area should have at least 50 artifacts but not more than 150. 2) Once you have picked your location and defined its boundaries, a draw sketch map of it. 3) Then, survey the area by systematically walking back and forth over it and recording on your sketch map the locations and kinds of artifacts that you observe on the surface of the ground. You should also make a separate list of artifacts to go with your map. 4) Prepare a neat and legible copy of your sketch map (with scale and key) with the artifacts coded by type (e.g., colors, symbols). Type the inventory list. Staple the map and list together and put your name on the top page. This assignment is worth 25 pts. Late assignments will have penalty points deducted!!
