This is a full-time tenure track position beginning in September 2008. The School is NCATE-accredited and offers a comprehensive program leading to Masters and Doctoral degrees. We share a fundamental commitment to social justice and the pursuit of educational excellence. Located in the beautiful Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the flagship campus of the Commonwealths university system and is a leading center of public higher education in the Northeast. Qualifications: doctorate in Mathematics Education or closely related field; substantial background in mathematics; teaching experience in K-12 schools; demonstrated potential for scholarship, research, and publication; and experience with pre-service and/or in-service teachers. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise and experience in upper elementary and/or middle school mathematics and/or supporting educators to teach students from diverse backgrounds. Relevant areas of research include, but are not limited to upper elementary and/or middle school teacher education, mathematical teaching and learning processes, issues of equity/multiculturalism in math classrooms, mathematics curriculum and instructional methods, and technology infusion into the mathematics school curriculum. Responsibilities: teach, advise and direct Masters and doctoral students, take a leadership role in the mathematics preparation of pre-service and in-serv ice teachers while working closely with colleagues to develop clinical/professional development school sites; maintain an active academic research agenda; participate in seeking and managing externally-funded projects. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in an active research and reform community that has been awarded numerous state- and federally-funded grants focused on mathematics and science education, student learning processes, and teacher enhancement.
