Ecology The of Coral Reefs INTRODUCTION: what are coral reefs what are corals types of coral reefs Coral Reef: "A ridge or mound of limestone the Reef: upper surface of which lies, or lay at the time of formation, near the level of the sea, and is predominately composed of calcium carbonate [CaCO3, mostly aragonite and high Mg calcite] secreted by organisms, of which the most important are (scleractinian) corals scleractinian [and calcifying red and green algae]" Alina M. Szmant Dept. of Biological Sciences and Center for Marine Science Research University of North Carolina at Wilmington Coral Reefs are built by..... ....dense communities of Scleractinian corals of many shapes and sizes Scleractinian corals: (Phylum Cnidaria, Class Anthozoa, Subclass Hexacorallia; Order Scleractinia). Primary reef builders since Jurassic (200 mybp) About 60 genera and 650 + species (out of several thousand) that qualify as reef-building. Most reef-building species have a symbiosis with a group of algae (dinoflagellates known as zooxanthellae) that are endo-symbionts (live inside their tissues) and that are important to the coral's nutrition and growth. This dependence on the algae limits them to shallow marine waters where there is plenty of light. factors that decrease coral cover and diversity result in ecosystem degradation Zoox enable reef-building corals to calcify 4 to10 times faster than their non-symbiotic, non-reef building relatives. Reefs form where: Rate of CaCO3 production >> rate of CaCO3 breakdown (erosion), thus CaCO3 left over for reef formation Physical conditions must be such that this excess carbonate accumulates in place BUT: Many present day "coral reefs" may be a thin veneer of coral growing on reef structures produced by coral reef communities thousands of years ago, and there may be little to no reef-building going on today. Facts About Coral Reefs Coral reefs are the oldest (over 200 million years old), most productive and diverse ecosystems in the sea. Coral reefs are the largest structures made by living organisms on earth. Coral reefs occupy less than one percent of the ocean floor but are home to about 25% of the world s identified marine species. Fore reef slope to seaward: 1-30 m depth Coral Reef Geomorphology: Reef crest/flat: berms & islands; 1-2 m depth Backreef: lagoon and patch reefs, 2-10 of m deep Relative development of these differents reef zones depends on: 1) depth and shape of platform on which reef formed (antecedent platform) 2) amount of wave energy and storm energy lagoon algal ridge spur & groove deep terraces deep slope FRINGING REEFS: next to shore, very close to land usually on narrower, steeper shelves usually not as thick an accumulation can be thicker if platform has been subsiding (e.g. Hawaii, 30 m = 100 ft thick) BANK/BARRIER REEFS: variable morphology, usually elongated or horse-shoe shaped form perpendicular to orientation of swell separated from land by some sort of lagoon created by presence of the reef along edge of shelves form barriers ATOLLS: mid-oceanic and +/- circular most formed on subsiding volcanoes large central lagoon passes provide exchange with ocean PATCH REEFS: small +/1 circular reefs generally in lagoons much smaller than above, less zonation Reefs in different parts of the world developed in different ways depending on how tectonic forces, glacial periods and temperature changes affected their development. Pleistocene Sea Level Curve t en es pr Global Distribution of Reefs highest species diversity Differences Between Atlantic and Indo-Pacific Reefs Highest diversity of reef corals occur in the Indo-Pacific, especially within the Philippine Islands, Indonesian Archipelago, New Guinea and northern Australia. The Indo-Pacific contains 85% of all coral reefs, the Atlantic only 15%. Atlantic reefs are one-tenth the area of Pacific areas but receive ten times more people activity. Atlantic has only about 40 genera and about 70 species of coral, around with 500 species of fishes. Indo-Pacific has in excess of 80, genera over 700 species of corals and more than 4,000 species of fishes. Of 107 know genera of coral, the Atlantic and Pacific share only 8. Atlantic reefs commonly have a profusion of sea fans and whips (gorgonians), which are much less evident in Indo-Pacific. Indo-Pacific reefs have large numbers of alcyonarian (soft) corals. Distribution/Limiting Factors Pacific reefs are typically categorized as atolls, barrier reefs, and fringing reefs. Atlantic reefs are often described as bank-barrier. Temperature: not found below 20 C/68 F. o (Optimal development between 25-29 C/77-84 o F.) Depth of platform: can survive at depths of 100 m, but most grow in depths of 25 m or less. Substrate: Planulae require bare consolidated substrate. Salinity / runoff: normal sea water (32-36 ppt); river discharge inhibits reef formation o o Global Distribution of Reefs Distribution/Limiting Factors Clear water: sedimentation blocks sunlight; smothers and clogs feeding structures. Moderate wave action and turbulence: Provides oxygenation, removes sedimentation and supplies plankton. Flows over 10 cm/sec preferred by corals and reef algae. High nutrient levels: nutrients from upwelling and run-off inhibit or reduce reef growth. Increased turbidity (phytoplankton) and competition with benthic algae. highest species diversity Coral reefs are comprised a number of different sub-habitats, all present in the same system (hard bottom, sand bottom, heavy wave action, minimal wave action). Neighborhoods Primary factors causing zonation are physical: Light and turbulence/wave action Done (1983): "The physical environment on a coral reef represents both a resource to be partitioned and a stress to be endured" Subdivision of resources and differential adaptations to stress bring together different species associations in different places along environmental gradients = zonation Loya (1972): Early study of zonation and diversity Coral species diversity increase (then decreases) with depth; therefore no correlation with light attenuation Colony size larger at intermediate depths Colony size decreases as light decreases down slope Steeper slopes have higher cover and diversity: less sediment stress Species Diversity: Effects of Depth High coral diversity is the result of optimal combinations of disturbance and growth rates, largely controlled by depth. Diversity increases with depth to a critical point (about 20 m), then decreases as light is reduced. Diversity is lowest at reef crest where only hardy, wave-tolerant species can survive diversity Zonation is most pronounced on very exposed windward reefs and least on sheltered, leeward reefs. Coral Reef Zonation Diversity zonation is also determined by biological interactions : depth (light & disturbance), grazing competition Competition Distrubance (depth) Depth (light) Grazing Physical conditions create a "Fundamental zone" (Pielou 1977) based on its physiological and morphological tolerances The "Realized Zone" is where an organism manages to occur after competition and predation, and other biological interactions have their effect Reef zones are often named after the coral or other organism that dominate them or their growth form Done and Pichon: Zonation of GBR corals 5 groups of species: A) Outer surf B) Inner surf C) Back reef slope: (above 3 high fidelity to particular reef zone) D) Moderate wave energy [fore reef; reef flat; back reef]: high fidelity to broad environmental factor/zone E) Ubiquitous: not particular or restricted to any one zone In general: growth form more 'zoned' than species Wave affected areas: wave resistant branched forms thickened branches that channel water encrusting and streamlined growth forms Sheltered areas: more diverse growth forms adapted to remove sediment, better competitors delicate branches large massive colonies flattened colonies with depth in response to low light
