This course offers constructive criticism of current communication and presentation skills, while learning about interpersonal effectiveness in a team environment. Learning Objectives General Learning Objectives: Ability to listen, think and read critically. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Appreciation for the impact behavior has on others as well as one s professional career. Specific Learning Objectives: Explore the various types business and administrative skills necessary to succeed in leadership. Explore one s individual strengths and weaknesses in effective communication and build upon them. Learn about team building and team work, along with the need for strong interpersonal skills. Develop an understanding of the process to begin a job search and how to successfully complete the process. Including resume and cover letter preparation while enhancing interviewing skills. Learn about the value of networking effectively. Prepare for the business world by learning business etiquette as well as learning to dress for success. Text Assignments Refer to Attachment A. Students are required to read each assignment prior to class. It is expected that the homework will be completed before class. Homework will be discussed each class. Additional reading may be handed out in class or requested through internet research. Classes Classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays in room 1008, Computer Information System Building, from 11:00 to 11:50am. There will be 29 class days along with a final exam. Guest lecturers will be invited to cover certain portions of the material. Students are expected to be in their seats no later than 10:55 p.m. each day class is held. It is important to extend the courtesy of being on time to your fellow students, faculty and our guests. Profanity is not permitted in the classroom as we are in a professional school. Professional appearance and actions are expected for presentations and guest lectures. Students are encouraged to "participate" in class by asking and answering questions. Your involvement makes the class much more interesting for you, your classmates and our guests. Guest Speakers Key individuals who are experts in the particular field will be presenting material related to the particular skill. Attendance is expected for these class times, the same as the routine class. A reflective memo may be due after each guest speaker. Technology Use of technology is permitted in the room only if it is used for the sole purpose of the class and not during an exam, group presentations or guest lectures. Corresponding with other students (email) will not be permitted during class nor will other forms of electronics that do not relate to the class (IPODS, Blackberry, etc). Cell phones and pagers must be turned off (silent) during class and cannot be used during class. Participation/Attendance Since each class carries forward the previous discussion, 100% attendance is encouraged and expected. The participation/attendance grade (20 points) will be broken down as follows. Ten points of this grade will consist of actual class attendance which will be calculated as classes attended divided by total classes. For example if a student attends 26 of 29 classes they will receive an 8.97 out of 10 (calculated as 26/29 * 10). The other ten points of this grade will consist of class participation. Each class random students will be selected to answer questions based on the assigned readings. Your preparedness for these questions and active participation in class discussions will determine this grade. If a student has a legitimate excuse regarding any absences in part or entirety, it is his/her responsibility to communicate with the instructor in person, by phone or by e-mail prior to the class or immediately following the scheduled time. Class attendance is taken during each class. It is the student's responsibility to initial by their name and on the proper date. She has a proven record of building high performance teams and developing processes and internal controls that increase value and profitability. She is currently the Director of Legal 5 Relations and Risk Management at VisionAIR, Inc. Other positions she has held throughout her career include Senior Financial Reporting Manager at Bell+Howell, State Auditor for the North Carolina Treasurer, Financial Analyst at Illuminex Corporation, and Regional Financial Analyst at BellSouth Mobility DCS. Mrs. Kincaid holds Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. She also has a Juris Doctor from North Carolina Central School of Law. Chuck Ninos Mr. Ninos established his own management and human resource performance consulting firm in 1989. The primary emphasis of his company is management, supervisory and organizational development, Lean Enterprise, Long Range Strategic Business Planning, Quality of Work Life Surveys and Executive Coaching. He has worked in both for-profit as well as the not-for profit organizations in the fields of banking, health care and manufacturing. From 1999 to 2003, Mr. Ninos served as a Senior Consultant/Vice President for National City Corporation where he designed and implemented a Talent Development Process for Senior Executives among other accomplishments. Prior to this position he was a Senior Organizational Consultant for Progressive Insurance Company (1998-1999), Vice President for Development for Sharon Regional Health System (1991-1993) and Vice President of Human Resources for F.N.B. Corporation. Earlier in his career Mr. Ninos was an instructor in the Penn State College of Business Administration, Management Development Services and the Director of Employee Relations for South Hills Health System also in Pennsylvania. He also holds a faculty position in the Penn State University Executive Programs which he has held since 1979 and is also currently a Program Director. He has also been a faculty member for the Central Atlantic Intermediate School of Banking and an Instructor for the American Institute of Banking. Education: Bachelor of Arts, Duquesne University; Master s Degree in Education, University of Pittsburgh; Doctoral Study, University of Pittsburgh Nick Rhodes Mr. Rhodes holds an Undergraduate Degree in Economics and a Masters Degree in Business Administration. He also spent twenty-one years as an officer in the United States Air Force. He held several senior level management positions in system engineering, and acquisition management. Managed all phases of the acquisition process, including business and financial management, procurement, and engineering development. Coordinated business activities with other government agencies in the development and acquisition of aeronautical and communication systems. Managed the Air Force s business activities related to several defense contractors including, the Boeing Company, LockheedMartin, TRW, and General Electric. As a Senior Manager for Arthur D. Little and PricewaterhouseCoopers provided consulting services to government and commercial clients in developing and implementing strategies for improving their business processes. Managed project teams of 30-50 people in the design and implementation of technical and functional process improvements. Developed technical and cost proposals for client requirements. Coached the technical staff on their educational and career objectives within the firm. Jack Stair I m a retired financial and human resources executive with extensive domestic and international experience in the design and financing of benefit plans for Fortune 15 companies. Jack was active in Washington industry groups lobbying for better legislation, authored papers and testified in congress on many benefits issues. Later in my career he spent my time almost exclusively on international issues, traveling all over the world. During this time he has developed many relationships with the insurance industry and the investment community. 6 Since moving to Wilmington, Jack has taught courses in Human Resources at UNCW for graduate and undergraduate programs, and once was Placement Director at CSB to develop a placement strategy for placing graduates, networking extensively with area businesses. He is active in the mentoring program since its inception and help out with the Resume Assistance Program whenever possible. He also has a lifelong interest in woodworking and has developed a woodworking course for Brunswick Community College to train new hires for Rampage Sportfishing Yachts, and have had some of his work published in Fine Woodworking magazine. 7
