7: Chapter Spectroscopy Report by: Nick Orozco Section 5 17 March 2008 Lab Partner: Colin Smolinsky Nick Orozco Section 5 17 March 2008 Lab Partner: Colin Smolinsky Chapter 7: Spectroscopy Purpose: The purpose of this lab was two-fold. First, we were to learn how to use a spectroscope to measure the wavelengths of various emission spectrums. Second, the purpose was to determine the identity of an unknown sample and its spectral wavelengths. In order to do this, we had to calibrate the spectroscope by observing wavelengths of known elements. After calculating the known wavelengths, a Calibration Plot was used to help us discover the identity of the unknown gas. Data: Measured (A) Hydrogen Dark Blue Light Green Red Sodium Lighter yellow Darker Yellow Mercury Blue Green Orange Unknown Purple Blue Light Green Green Yellow Red Dark Red 4100 4700 6700 Exact (A) 4340 4870 6570 Error (A) -240 -170 130 % Error 5.529953917 3.490759754 1.97869102 Mean (%) 2.937987339 Standard Dev. Helium is the unknown gas. 2. The table of my findings is above. 3. The average of the percent error was 2.93% and this is likely due to our inability to accurately read the emission lines through the spectroscope. The standard deviation of the data is 3.66%, suggesting that our error was not very consistent and the averages varied. 4. Sources of error: Parallax while observing the emissions (Random and Systematic) The lens could be messed up from overuse or misuse (Systematic) The spectroscope could be set up improperly (Systematic) We may have looked through the spectroscope incorrectly and misread the emission lines (Random) 5. 6. If electrons were allowed to move freely around the nucleus of an atom at different radii, the element's emission spectrum would vary all the time because different wavelengths of light would be produced at various times.
