Methods Research II Graduate (Fall 2005) Political Science 5116 (94415) www.psci.vt.edu/brians/ W 9:00-11:50am Major Williams Hall 527 Lab: W 8:00-8:50am Shanks 180 Craig L. Brians, Ph.D. cbrians@vt.edu Office Hours: 2:15p-3:00p MWF 522 Major Williams Hall 231-7544 Texts and Readings: Babbie, Earl. 2004. The Practice of Social Research. Tenth Edition. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth/Thompson Learning. Manheim, Jarol, Richard Rich, Lars Willnat, and Craig Leonard Brians. 2006. Empirical Political Analysis: Research Methods in Political Science. Sixth Edition. New York, NY: Longman. Newsweek will be read weekly. The least expensive way to subscribe is by calling 800-6311040 and ask for the student discount, which should be about $24 for one year. Additional readings will come from Political Science journal articles that will be periodically assigned. Course Description: As the second course in the research methods sequence, PSCI 5116 builds on the skills you acquired in PSCI 5115 and in previous statistics courses. This research methods course provides an introduction to data analysis, premised on the principle of learning by doing. It focuses on the measurement and interpretation of relationships. The material presented in lecture, class discussion, exercises, and texts will be applied by you in several written projects. By the end of the semester you will have refined your research, statistical, and analytic skills. The purpose of PSCI 5116 is to equip you with the ability to read research reports, as well as conduct your own empirical analyses. The texts for this seminar provide the methodological background for the concrete examples found in the supplemental articles. Our use of Babbie (2004) reviews your earlier examination of this text in PSCI 5115. This general social science methods text provides a starting point to discuss research, and you will benefit from having another look at the relevant topics (although the chapters are not listed in this syllabus). Empirical Political Analysis (EPA) focuses more closely on the specific methods used in Political Science, and includes examples drawn from our discipline. Most of the time, seminar discussions will focus on a single chapter from this text s expansive coverage of literature, quantitative and qualitative research. Reading Newsweek before each class will offer us a common touchpoint of the usefulness and application of research in exploring contemporaneous social and political issues. Additionally, several journal articles will be assigned for each week s seminar. These articles are chosen to illustrate the methods being studied, and citations to the articles will be posted on the course web page before each seminar. The Lab section, in particular, offers many opportunities for direct experience with the research process. Lab assignments range from organizing research in Word, to researching with the Web, to using the SPSS statistics software for quantitative analysis. Lab readings and exercises will generally be posted on the course website before the Lab section meets. All Lab assignments are due at the beginning of Lab the following week. This class encourages students to make full use of business and professional communication media. This syllabus is available as a PDF on the Web (www.psci.vt.edu/brians/). Students are likewise encouraged to utilize the wealth of political information and research available at links from the course Web Page. Your professor is best contacted by phone (231-7544), via e-mail (cbrians@vt.edu), or during scheduled class or office hours. If you email, please follow business protocol by identifying your emails with a descriptive subject, to avoid being confused with spam. In this class, for example, in the subject line of each message, please place the class number (e.g., PSCI 5116) first. If the message is not referring to a specific class, please note "PSCI" before the subject. This additional cue should make it much easier for us to communicate. Every effort will be made to reply to emails within 24 hours on business days. Many class or research-oriented questions require interactive responses and may be better addressed by phone or in person. Grading: most Unlike Political Science graduate (and many undergraduate) courses, this class does not culminate in a single term project. Instead, the focus here is on equipping you with tools that should facilitate researching and writing your Master s Thesis. Thus, this course features a series of smaller assignments; weekly textbook and article readings, weekly brief discussion papers, class discussion of the week s topic, lab homework assignments, and other assignments that provide you with direct research experience. This course also places principal responsibility for the content of seminar discussions on you. You, the student, must come each week fully prepared to lead a discussion of the textbook and supplemental readings. In preparing for this, substantial effort should be put into your weekly 1- to 2-page written discussions of the readings. These papers will summarize the research method being studied (with information cited from the textbooks), and then evaluate each of the articles, based upon the quality of the technique s application. In addition, supplementary coursework that requires you to apply specific research methods will be assigned from time-to-time. Each week, reading and homework assignments will be required in the Lab section. While the Lab will involve more direct professorial instruction than seen in the seminar, you still need to be fully prepared for each Lab. An incomplete ( I ) is assigned only to a student who is otherwise passing the class and only in cases of unavoidable or unforeseen circumstances (e.g., major illness) that prevents a student from completing the course requirements. Verifiable documentary evidence, such as a Medical Doctor s note, is required. Any student who feels that he or she may need an accommodation because of a disability (e.g., learning disability, attention deficit disorder, psychological, physical, etc.) should make an appointment to see me during or outside of office hours. To maintain a fair and untainted learning environment for all students, there must be no cheating, plagiarism, or other dishonest conduct. Each of these terms is defined in the Virginia Tech Honor Code (www.gradhonor.grads.vt.edu/). Each written assignment shall include a statement personally signed by the student stating that the work was performed by the undersigned student. Any violations of the honor code will be fully reported. 2 Graduate Research Methods Schedule (PSCI 5116): Fall 2005 Location Aug. 24: Lab 1 Seminar Topic No lab today Introduction to Empirical Research; Summarizing research techniques and findings Article Summary No lab today Reviewing Literature Article Review Outlining Literature Review: Locating Research (meet in Torgersen 3310 Library PC classroom) Brief Literature Review No Lab due Describing Qualitative vs. Quantitative Relationships Qualitative and Quantitative Research Lab 4 Using Codebooks Replication Theories and Hypotheses Lab 5 Sampling and the Central Limit Theorem Sampling Lab 6 Comparing Polities Comparative Analysis Lab 7 Intro to SPSS Descriptive Data Analysis in SPSS Univariate Analysis Lab 8 Relationships in Plots and Crosstabs Tabular and Graphical Data Description Lab 9 Means Testing, Correlation and Regression Bivariate Analysis Lab 10 OLS Regression in SPSS Multivariate Analysis Readings Aug. 31: Due Lab 2 Seminar Due Lab 3 Seminar Sept. 7: Lab: Ch. 4, 7 EPA: Ch. 3 Sept. 14: Due Lab 4 Seminar EPA: Intro to Part IV Sept. 21: Due Lab 5 Seminar Lab: Ch. 3 EPA: Ch. 2 Lab: Ch. 5 EPA: Ch. 7 Sept. 28: Due Lab 6 Seminar Oct. 5: Due Lab 7 Seminar Due Lab 8 Seminar EPA: Ch. 12 Lab Manual: Ch. 1 EPA: Ch. 16 Lab: Ch. 2 EPA: Ch. 15 Oct. 12: Oct. 19: Due Lab 9 Seminar Oct. 26: Due Lab 10 Seminar Lab: Ch. 6, 12 EPA: Ch. 17 Nov. 2: Due Lab 11 Seminar EPA: Ch. 18 3 Nov. 9: Due Lab 12 Seminar Due Lab 13 Seminar Lab 11 Recoding Data Direct Observation Observation Ethical Research Focus Groups Thanksgiving Break Lab: Ch. 11 EPA: Ch. 19 Nov. 16: EPA: Ch. 20 Nov. 19Nov. 27: Nov. 30: Due Lab 14 Seminar Due Lab 15 Seminar Human Research Tutorial No lab today Elite and Specialized Interviewing No lab today Future Research EPA: Ch. 21 Dec. 7: 4
