Topics include: the impact of colonialism, rise of the one-party state, democratization, apartheid in South Africa, genocide in Rwanda, civil war in Sierra Leone, and the collapsed state of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Grades will be based on: -map quiz on 1/27 (10%) -mid term on 3/3 (45%) -final on 4/28 (45%) You will also be expected to follow political affairs in Africa by consulting regularly the news site, www.allafrica.com. Graduate Students will write a 15-page term paper (in addition to the above requirements due on 4/21.) Textbooks (available at Engineers Bookstore; also on library reserve) 1.
