1011 COA Fundamentals of Design and the Built Environment I College of Architecture Georgia Institute of Technology Fall 2006 Exercise 2.5: Preparing for the Final Review Overview Exercise 2.5 provides you time to reflect upon and re-tell the story (stories) of the cube you have been working on: from the initial pattern analysis and manipulations to the explorations, focusing on structure and assembly, carried out in chipboard models. For 2.5, you will produce two specific kinds of drawings, described below, that will supplement the drawings and models already made in 2.1 through 2.4. I. Retrospective Account: An analytical look back at the process to date focusing on diagrammatic representations of the unfolding and evolving pattern logic. There are three steps to this stage: Review. Collect, sort through, and review the diagrams, sketches, studies, and snapshots you made for each of the sub-exercises. Curate. Select and organize these diagrams into a coherent sequence or narrative. Prepare. Redraw, recompose, and/or mediate, these diagrams in order to prepare them for presentation. This set of diagrammatic drawings will be a central part of your final presentation. II. Projective Speculation: An imaginative look forward that explores the possibilities latent in the models. Embedded within the final models you for made 2.4 is a whole series of design moves that go back to the initial pattern analysis. In this sense the models are palimpsests, an accumulation of traces of prior moves and intentions. But as three-dimensional artifacts they are full of potential as well, with qualities that lie latent within them, ready to be acted upon by our imaginations. In this sense they are projections that offer up new readings (or misreadings) and possibilities. Your task is to produce two series of drawings, each in a particular medium and genre, that draw out and explore qualities implicit within the models. Each series could be thought of as postcards from the project , representations that communicate qualities of the cube that the drawings and models produced in 2.1 through 2.4 do not. Series One. For the first series produce three to five charcoal drawings of the model lit dramatically by one or more light source. Think back to the charcoal investigations you did in 1.4b and 1.4c. The drawings should be small, snapshot size, that focus in on a particular moment within the cube. Series Two. For the second series produce three-to-five small, snapshot size, pencil perspective drawings of the model in the round, as an object held by you and described from all sides. Use the perspective tool-kit you used in 1.3c and 1.5.
