the Writing Essay: Science Exercise 3.1 November 27, 2005 11:00-12:15 Bipolar Disorder Description: Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder in which a person can feel extreme elatedness but also feel an extreme depression. (Wikipedia). Although bipolar disorder is not curable, there are a lot of ways to treat its symptoms. Some examples of treatment of bipolar syndrome is: antipsychotic drugs (olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone), marijuana, omega-3 fatty acids, lithium salts, and mood stabilizers. Can bipolar disorder truly be diagnosed? Is it a disability in the mind or in the body's chemicals? Being diagnosed with bipolar disorder may just be a way for people to receive prescription drugs. Since bipolar disorder is a disorder that is psychological, diagnosing someone with it can only be by the opinion of a doctor and not from any blood tests or tests of chemicals in a person's body. It is even harder to diagnose bipolar disorder in children. There has been controversy if children with bipolar disorder really have bipolar disorder AD/HD or (Baltimorepysch.com). This shows that bipolar disorder is hard to clearly diagnose and can only be diagnosed by each individual doctor. Significance in community: Is bipolar disorder a disorder of the mind or is it really the body's functions that make one bipolar? The use of drugs to treat those with bipolar disorder may inspire those who don't have bipolar disorder to pretend to have it and be able to get a prescription for antidepressants and other drugs that treat bipolar disorder. The fact that bipolar disorder can't be tested for through blood tests, etc. show that it is easy to claim to have bipolar disorder even though one may not have it. Question: Is there really a way to know if someone has bipolar disorder or not? Is bipolar disorder just a matter of opinion than a sickness? How can we tell whether a person has bipolar disorder or not?
