5110, Accounting T-Th 6:00p- 9:50p Summer 2008 Professional Accounting Research Instructor: Rusty Hale, CPA Office: 217K Business Building Mobile phone number: 214-491-9950 E-Mail: rusty.hale@gt.com Office Hours: Immediately before and after class and by appointment COURSE MATERIALS: Required: Accounting & Auditing Research: Tools and Strategies (6th edition) by T. Weirich, T. Pearson, and A. Reinstein, 2005, Thomson*South-Western Publishers. (WPR) Effective WritingB A Handbook for Accountants (8th edition) by C. B. May and G. S. May, 2006. Prentice Hall: Upper Saddle River, NJ. (M&M) COURSE OVERVIEW: This course provides an in-depth examination of the professional accounting research process. This includes using online and electronic accounting, auditing, and tax research databases, practice in issue identification, reading and analyzing primary sources, using common secondary sources, and communicating your results. The course incorporates the idea of continuous learning as the methodology to understand and apply professional research. I will utilize active learning techniques in presenting the material. COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Providing practice in understanding and analyzing primary authoritative sources in financial reporting, auditing and tax. 2. Developing competence in locating and researching primary & secondary sources. 3. Strengthening writing skills for business communications and client file documentation. 4. Using the source and weight of authoritative sources to create strong, logical, analytical reasoning. 5. Improving oral skills through classroom discussion and presentations. 6. Practicing effective teamwork and managing potential group dynamic problems. 7. Using electronic resources for resolving complex issues. This includes professional databases as well as other online sites. 8. Understanding and debating relevant theoretical issues directly related to the practitioner. REQUIREMENTS: 1. Complete advance reading and exercise assignments and participate in, in-class activities. 2. Complete individual and group research assignments, with professional technical competency. 3. Complete and do your fair share of the work in team research assignments. CLASS ROUTINE: Classes will be conducted using demonstrations and lectures, discussions, active learning exercises and student presentations. You are expected to be prepared and to show technical competency. If you truly prepare for class you should do well; you can expect to do poorly if you do not prepare in advance for each class meeting. FORMAT FOR WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS: All weekly written assignments must be typed; single-spaced otherwise (unless instructed) with one-inch margins; using 12 font size for the text and 10 font size for any footnotes; and NO cover page to be used except for group projects. All assignments will be graded for both content and style. On a random basis, written assignments will be scanned and checked with various plagiarisms identifying software. Additional information will be forthcoming. GROUP ASSIGNMENTS: I will assign several group projects during the semester. I will assign students to these groups. I will attempt to have you work with different students for each group assignment. I will use peer evaluations, self evaluations, and my own assessment to determine each member s contribution to the group. Additional information will be forthcoming. PARTICIPATION: Much of your grade is based on your in-class contributions. You can participate in many different ways: active participation in class discussions, volunteering to respond to questions, asking relevant questions, presenting and explaining your in-class exercise answers. Few class participation points will be earned by merely attending class. Missing class will earn you zero for participation points for that day. COURSE PREREQUISITES: Students are expected to have completed the following courses. If you lack one or more, please see the instructor for approval. Intermediate Accounting I and II (3110 and 3120) Advanced Accounting Principles (4140) Federal Income Taxation (4300) Auditing (4400) STATEMENT OF ACADEMIC HONESTY Academic integrity is expected of all students. This means that we not only expect you to refrain from any form of cheating; we also expect that you will report any suspected cheating. Failure to report cheating or allowing someone to copy your work compromises the academic environment. I consider it to be the equivalent of cheating. The following university guideline applies: All students found guilty of cheating or plagiarism will (at a minimum) receive an F in the course and could be expelled from the university. Plagiarism and cheating refer to the use of unauthorized books, notes or otherwise securing help on a test; copying tests, assignments, term papers; representing the work of another person as one s own.; collaborating, without authority, with another student during an examination or in preparing academic work; signing another students name on an attendance sheet; or otherwise practicing scholastic dishonesty. YOU MUST INGRAIN THE IDEAL THAT THE ESSENCE OF THE ACCOUNTING PROFESSION MUST BE INTEGRITY AND HONESTY. Good luck and I hope you have fun learning in this course.
