Becoming a Master Student. 11th ed. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2005. Planner Folder or 3-ring binder for saving course materials, handouts, etc. Walsh University e-mail address Walsh University mailbox number Course Information: This placement-only course is required as part of Walsh University s Structured Education Program. The class will introduce you to selected study, testing, communications, and time management skills necessary for successful completion of both core and elective college courses. The purpose is to work to change behaviors and study patterns. This class will meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:15 2:15 p.m.. The first class meeting of the week will generally be devoted to my own coverage of the week s material, while the second meeting will be devoted to a presentation given by a pair of students. The third hour of coursework will be two weekly half-hour by-arrangement tutorials spread over ten weeks, as outlined below under Tutoring Requirements. Course Requirements: Tutoring As stated above, the third hour of coursework for this class will be made up of two halfhour tutorial sessions per week, one half-hour in English and the other half-hour in Mathematics, or another designated subject. This means that a full one-third of your grade is provided simply by attending tutoring and using the tutorial sessions wisely. English 110 A Spring 2006 Syllabus Page 1 of 8 You will be required to arrange your own tutoring times with both the English and the Mathematics (or other subject) Tutor, though they will provide you with a sign-up sheet. English tutoring will be signed up for in your English 111 class. If you are not in English 111, but in 100, 101, or 102, there is a writing tutor assigned to each of the sections. Those of you not coming from English 111 will sign up for writing tutoring in this class. Math tutoring (or another designated subject) will be signed up for in this class. The next option is to sign up for tutoring in a failed course, which you are now repeating this semester. The last option is to sign up for tutoring in a subject of your preference. All tutoring times are to stay the same each week. To keep schedules running smoothly, tutoring will be required only during weeks that have five school days, listed here and above in the weekly schedule: YOU MUST ATTEND TUTORING DURING THESE WEEKS: September 11 15 September 18 22 September 25 29 October 2- 6 October 16 20 October 23 27 October 30 Nov. 3 November 6 - 10 November 13 17 November 27 Dec. 1 TUTORING DURING THE FOLLOWING WEEKS IS OPTIONAL, BUT NOT REQUIRED: August 28 September 1 September 4 9 October 9 13 November 20 24 You will need to bring work with you to each tutoring session. Also, under no circumstances will sessions of less than 20 minutes of quality work be counted for points. This means that you have to be very careful to come to the tutoring appointment on time, or you will miss most of your allotted half-hour. The tutors work closely with me, so I will know right away who is and is not coming to tutorials, who is working and who isn t, etc. I realize that unforeseen circumstances to arise, and that these may prevent you from attending your planned tutoring sessions. However, your tutors are students just like you, so their time is as valuable as yours. Thus, you are allowed to make up at most three (3) missed tutorials, but you must observe the following rules: English 110 A Spring 2006 Syllabus Page 2 of 8 1. If you cannot make the prescheduled weekly tutorial, you must e-mail the tutor at least three (3) hours before the time the tutorial was scheduled to begin. 2. If you do not e-mail the tutor at least three (3) hours before the time the tutorial is scheduled to begin or if you simply fail to e-mail the tutor and then do not up for the tutorial, you cannot make up the tutorial that was missed, and the 25 points will be forfeited. 3. The student may reschedule each missed tutorial only once, provided it has been cancelled according to rule 1. The rescheduled time MUST fall no more than ONE WEEK after the original, missed appointment. If you miss the make-up tutorial or try to make up the make-up session, you will not be permitted to reschedule, and the 25 points will be forfeited. You must choose your make-up time wisely! The tutors have a right to refuse to see you if you continually fail to show up for your tutorials without explanation given beforehand. If this happens, you will lose very valuable points, and you will probably end up failing the course. And don t forget: tutoring for English counts for BOTH Study Skills and your English 111 class, and tutoring for Math counts for BOTH Study Skills and your Math 100 class. This means that you are LOSING points in BOTH classes if you miss! Counseling Additionally, you will be required to attend five (5) sessions of by-arrangement counseling, which you will set up and attend on your own. If you are a conditional student, you may count these five hours as those required as part of the conditional admittance contract. Also, you may count these five hours in your FYI course. If you are on academic probation and must attend counseling sessions, this will count as part of your attendance/participation grade. The counselor will report if you attended your counseling sessions or not. You must attend three counseling sessions in order to earn any points. If you attend all five counseling sessions, you will earn all the points for full credit. The Counseling Office will also provide you with a planner at your first meeting, so ask for the planner then. Readings Be sure to purchase the text for the course, as you will need to read the required material before the class meets. Be aware, as well, that the journals and sometimes questions on the midterm may come from the assigned readings, even if we have not explicitly covered the material in class. Journals These will generally consist of typed, double-spaced written responses to the reading selections, and they will be due Wednesday of each week. Each journal will be worth 45 points total, but to earn an A, you will need to write a thorough investigation of the question including not only actual written support from the text, but input from your own experience as well. Journals that are average, including only vague textual support or generalities unsupported by experience, will earn a C. Journals that are minimal, including only two or three sentence responses, will be marked with a D. Journals that are yes or no answers only will not be accepted and will earn a zero. There are eight journals assigned. Each of you will do seven of English 110 A Spring 2006 Syllabus Page 3 of 8 the eight journals. The week you signed up to do your presentation will be the week you do not have to turn in a journal. In short, don t blow off these assignments, or you will find yourself losing points very quickly. You will not be required to hand in a journal the week you give your presentation (see below). If it turns out that only one person is doing a presentation, he or she will write all seven journals and the lowest grade will be dropped at the end of the semester. Presentations Once during the course of the semester, you and a partner will be required to present a summary of important information on our weekly topic to the class. The aim of your presentation is to add to information that I have already presented to the class that week. This presentation should be 30 minutes in length, and the work including the oral presentation should be equally divided between you and your partner. (You will be graded on how well you shared, or did not share, the workload.) Feel free to use any sort of visual aid (PowerPoint, handouts, etc.) to make your points. Since there is a fair amount of work involved in this, the week that you do your presentation, you will NOT be required to hand in a journal. A little later in the semester I will provide you with a more comprehensive list of what I am looking for in the presentation. The main focus of these weekly presentations is to take something from the chapter and create an application that the class can perform. Do not just do a PowerPoint that reviews the chapter. Midterm You will take a traditional midterm at the mid-point of the semester. This test will consist of multiple-choice, true/false, essay questions, etc. This test will be administered on Sakai. Final Your final in the course will be a portfolio of, among other things, the work that you have done throughout the semester. To that end, be sure to SAVE everything do you for this course, as you will need to turn it in at the end of the course for credit in the portfolio. Several weeks before the portfolio is due, I will give you a rubric delineating what needs to be in it. Planner You are also expected to bring and use any sort of appropriate planner. I will periodically check planners to ensure that they are being appropriately used in an academic setting. The Counseling Office will supply you with a free planner at your first counseling session, so ask for the planner. E-mail address A Walsh University e-mail address will be required for this course, as any announcements, tutoring schedules, and other information will be sent to you electronically. You will also need to return completed journals to me by e-mail. You should make certain that your Walsh e-mail accounts is established and working by Friday, September 1, 2006. I will English 110 A Spring 2006 Syllabus Page 4 of 8 send an e-mail on this date with the request for a reply. Anyone not replying within 24 hours will lose 15 points. Attendance and Participation You are expected to attend all class meetings, but extenuating circumstances sometimes arise. To that end, you will be allowed two (2) excused absences, both of which require notification beforehand or as soon as possible after the class missed. Any absence after the initial two will result in the forfeiting of 50 points per absence. If any of these absences after the first two are taken because of circumstances beyond your immediate control, it is your responsibility to show me specific documentation (doctor s note, etc.) to prevent points from being forfeited. In all events, the determination of whether to excuse an absence lies with me, as I must follow University-wide guidelines. If you enter the classroom after class has begun, I will consider you to be late for class. Three late-arrivals will count as one absence, which will be subject to the rules given above. I will consider extreme extenuating circumstances which result in continuing absences on a case-by-case basis. I also reserve the right to administratively withdraw you from the course after you miss nine (9) hours of class time (see Walsh University Undergraduate Catalogue 2005-2006). If you are absent, permission to submit late or missed work is also up to me. Generally, I do not have a problem with accepting work, as long as the absence was for an excused reason, and you are careful to keep track of what you miss. Simply put, I will not chase you down to tell you what you have missed or will miss; it is up to you to see me in a timely fashion to take care of this missed work. Class Behavior As an adult member of a post-secondary learning community, you are expected to help me maintain an academic environment appropriate to the college level. This includes always being courteous and respectful of others ideas and opinions. The best way to show this respect is to refrain from holding personal conversations while I and/or your classmates are speaking. Showing respect also includes being very careful to turn off or set to silent mode your cell phone, etc., during class time. Also, if you are a male, be prepared to attend class without wearing anything on your head. If I feel that you are unduly interrupting the educational process, I have the right to ask you to leave the classroom. If you persist in staying after two requests to leave, I will contact Campus Police, who will escort you out of the classroom. If I do ask you to leave, you will forfeit the points tied to any work done that day in class, although you will be expected to meet with me prior to the next scheduled class meeting and to attend that next class. Sakai Sakai is an on-line course management system that Walsh University is using. You would go on-line to the Internet, and then in the Address box type http://sakai.walsh.edu. Once there, you would log on with your same name and password that you use to log onto Walsh University s system. We will be using the Announcements, Resources, and Drop Box. You will send your journal assignments to your Drop Box on Sakai. English 110 A Spring 2006 Syllabus Page 5 of 8 Grading: The breakdown for each assignment will be: Attendance and Participation (10 %): Class work (41 2/3 %): 45 points/journal x 7 journals = 90 points/presentation x 1 presentation = 90 points/midterm x 1 midterm = 175 points/final exam x 1 final exam = Counseling (15 %): 45 points/session x 5 sessions = You will receive 135 points for attending 3 sessions. Plagiarism Policy (taken from the English Department Handbook): Plagiarism, the unacknowledged use of another s words or ideas, violates academic honesty and will not be tolerated by me, the instructor, or the Structured Education Program. Plagiarism in freshman courses will result in a failing grade for the assignment, although instructors may fail the student for the course, depending on the nature of the offense. English 110 A Spring 2006 Syllabus Page 6 of 8 The instructor and the Structured Education Program consider the following activities as plagiarism: 1) handing in a paper written by someone else, 2) copying directly from sources without using quotations and documentation, 3) using others ideas without proper documentation, 4) paraphrasing without using proper documentation, 5) handing in a paper already submitted in another course without acknowledging this in advance to the instructor.
