Media Mass Law & Ethics, COM370 Spring 2008 Syllabus Meetings: Wednesdays 6-9 p.m. LH 102 Instructor: Dr. Jamey Parramore Office Hours: before/after class as needed, by appt. as necessary E-Mail: jparramore@walsh.edu Course Emphases and Objectives: This course offers students a comprehensive survey of mass media law and regulation. It covers case law, legal theory and media ethics spanning a wide variety of legal areas including First Amendment and freedom of expression law, censorship, defamation, privacy, freedom of information, access to courts and records, obscenity, advertising and broadcast regulation, and access to media. Successful students in this course will gain a basic understanding of the state of the law in each of these legal areas and become familiar with the major cases and theories that have led to the current system of media law and regulation. Required Text: Mass Media Law, Pember & Calvert, 2007-2008 Edition Class Participation & Attendance: Students should plan to attend all scheduled class sessions. Students who miss a meeting have the responsibility to find out what took place in class and to secure class notes, assignments or other relevant information. There is no formal attendance policy. However, history has shown that it normally is difficult for those choosing not to attend classes to score well on exams. The class will be run under a Modified Socratic Dialogue system (modified from the pure Socratic Method used in many law school courses). With this format you should complete all assigned readings in preparing for class meetings, as you are highly encouraged to participate in class discussions. Additional Grading Information: The four examinations given in this course are meant to test the students and knowledge understanding of material and ideas relevant to meeting the class objectives. Exams are based on information in the textbook, class discussions, and on other materials (videos, handouts, etc.) examined in class. Information in the book that is not discussed or mentioned in class will not appear on tests. Test questions may take a variety of forms including: True/False, Multiple Choice, Matching, Short Answer, and Essay. Grading Scale: A 95-100 C 73-76 A- 90-94 B+ 87-89 D 63-66 B 83-86 B- 80-82 C+ 77-79 D- 60-62 F Below 60 C- 70-72 D+ 67-69 Grading Breakdown: *Exam #1 *Exam #2 *Exam #3 *Exam #4 (final exam) *Total 25 percent 25 percent 25 percent 25 percent 100 percent Class Schedule * *(Schedule grid may be modified and is provided to help students keep track of assigned readings, examinations, and class meetings.)
