/ FT.com By industry / Energy Utilities Mining - War of words Gazprom hits out at EU gas plansSkip to main content, accesskey 's' Homepage, accesskey '1' Wednesday Apr 26 2006 . All times are London time. Roger Bove Edit Profile Take a Tour Log out By industry / Energy Utilities MiningPrint article | Email article Main page content: War of words Gazprom hits out at EU gas plans Published: April 26 2006 03:00 | Last updated: April 26 2006 03:00 Gazprom continued its war of words on the European Union yesterday with an attack on EU plans to liberalise the gas market, describing Europe's Energy Charter Treaty as a "stillborn document". ADVERTISEMENT Speaking at the Russian Economic Forum in London, Alexander Medvedev (above), deputy chief executive, warned that EU proposals to deregulate and loosen long-term contracts between Gazprom and EU-based customers could "undermine the stability of the gas market". Alexei Miller, Gazprom chief executive, told EU ambassadors last week that the company might favour North America and China if European countries blocked its ambitions to expand. Mr Medvedev insisted this comment should not be "interpreted as a threat or blackmail". He pledged Gazprom would increase supplies to Europe, raising its share of the market from 26 per cent to 33 per cent in 2010.But he said that when the group made its long-term investment decisions it would take EU attitudes to long-term contracts into account, saying that long-term security of supply went hand in hand with "long-term security of demand".
