tries Blair to limit the damage from Rover fall-out By Christopher Hope and Nick Britten (Filed: 09/04/2005) Your view: Have politicans got it right? Tony Blair raised the prospect that MG Rover may be saved after visiting Birmingham yesterday in an attempt to limit the electoral fall-out from its collapse. Despite the Government's offer of a 100 million bridging loan, administrators were appointed to the loss-making car firm after takeover talks with the Chinese company Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation failed. The prospect of a deal looked bleak as a source close to the Chinese told The Telegraph the "Prime Minister had his chance" and the Rover brand was "damaged beyond belief". Thousands of workers arrived at the Longbridge plant not knowing whether their jobs would be saved. Facing the prospect of huge job losses in marginal constituencies weeks before an election, the Prime Minister and Gordon Brown, the Chancellor, went to the city. Speaking at the offices of the T&G union, Mr Blair said he had written to Wen Jiabao, China's prime minister, pressing for a deal to be done with SAIC. "It is still possible that there may be the opportunity of doing something with the Chinese company, although not the original prospect that was there a few weeks ago," the Prime Minister said. "This is a very difficult time. We will continue to do everything we can to keep car production and as many jobs as possible." Jack Dromey, the T&G deputy general secretary, who chaired the meeting, said: ''There is a determination to find a way forward which sees a global alliance between Rover and the Chinese." John Towers, the chairman of the consortium that bought MG Rover, arrived at Heathrow airport from Shanghai, last night. He said: "I don't want to build up hopes but we've got options here I think.'' But sources close to the Chinese said the last meaningful talks with MG Rover had taken place "seven to 10 days ago". They played down suggestions that any deal could resurrected. be One said: "It is now the administrator's problem, not the Prime Minister's. The PM has had his chance.'' SAIC, which invested 67 million in MG Rover last November, said in a statement: "It was not until the detailed due diligence was undertaken that the full extent of the financial liabilities of MG Rover became apparent." Mr Blair was speaking hours after Price Waterhouse Coopers was appointed administrator to run MG Rover and its Powertrain engines plant. A 40 million package of aid was announced by the Government to help the expected jobs fall-out. A Rover Task Force will meet on Monday to offer help in retraining workers facing redundancy and advice to firms across the West Midlands to cope with the loss of business. Workers arrived in the snow and freezing wind at 6am knowing that with production having ceased 24 hours earlier there was nothing to do except wait for the inevitable bad news. It came just after 10.30am, when they were called to a union meeting and heard that the administrators had been called in. During a stormy discussion, they were told that they would be paid until Monday and be given a 280 bonus for each year of service up to 12 years. They were asked to report back on Monday as usual and attend a union meeting that night. As they left the factory Carl Stanley, 42, from Stourbridge, said: "It's absolute chaos in there. I can't believe it. "Two days ago everything was OK and now we're out of work. There's a lot of bitterness and I blame John Towers and people like that. I hope to God this is a nail in Tony Blair's coffin." Another worker said: "Bad management has let the situation get to this yet we are the ones who are going to suffer. The managers haven't even got the bottle to tell us that we are out of work."
