FT.com / World / International economy - UK overtakes China as FDI destinationSkip to main content, accesskey 's' Homepage, accesskey '1' Thursday Sep 29 2005 . All times are London time. Roger Bove Edit Profile Take a Tour Log out World / International economyPrint article | Email article Main page content: UK overtakes China as FDI destination By Frances Williams in Geneva Published: September 29 2005 18:01 | Last updated: September 29 2005 18:01 The UK attracted more foreign direct investment than China last year, becoming the world's second largest FDI recipient after the US, a United Nations study said on Thursday. Investment flows to the UK nearly quadrupled to $78bn ( 65bn) in 2004 from $20bn in 2003, much of this coming from the US, according to the UN Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad) in its annual world investment report. UK inflows were boosted by some hefty cross-border mergers and acquisitions, notably the $16bn purchase of Abbey National by Santander Central Hispano, Spain's largest bank, which turned out to be the world's biggest international M&A deal last year. The acquisition of UK-based Amersham by General Electric of the US for $9.6bn was the fourth biggest takeover worldwide, and eight other British companies were bought for $1bn or more. FDI inflows to the US rose from $57bn in 2003 to $96bn in 2004, while flows to China increased from $54bn to $61bn. The big upward revision in US inflows for 2003, originally estimated at just $30bn, also shows that, contrary to earlier reports, the US has never ceded its lead to China as an investment destination. Increased investment in the UK and US last year nevertheless contrasted with a steep drop in overall FDI flows to industrialised countries, which fell 14 per cent to $380bn. Flows to the European Union dropped twice as much by more than a third to $216bn, primarily due to sharp falls in FDI in Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. According to Unctad, this reflected mainly repayments and repatriations of intra-company loans and, in Luxembourg's case, a reduction in transhipped investment rather than more fundamental factors. However, the report says that in recent years France and the UK have performed well in terms of FDI while Italy and Germany have lagged behind, which Unctad blames on weak economic growth and relatively rigid labour markets . Rapidly-growing FDI inflows to developing countries, up 40 per cent last year to $233bn, were the driving force behind a 2 per cent increase in global FDI. Of the $648bn world total, a third is now accounted for by developing economies, led by China, Hong Kong, Brazil and Mexico. Unctad says it expects a continuing rise in FDI flows to poorer nations, fuelled by the growing demand of China and India for raw materials that has already led to significant Chinese investments in Latin America and Africa. While the biggest outward investors remain the US and the UK, companies based in the developing world, especially in Asia, are increasingly active in rich countries as well as poor ones. Unctad cites last year's acquisition of Canadian brewer John Labatt by Ambev of Brazil and the takeover by China's Lenovo of the personal computer division of IBM (US). The report also notes a shift towards developing countries, especially those in Asia, as a destination for corporate investment in research and development. More than half the world's top R&D spenders are already conducting R&D in China, India or Singapore, it says. www.unctad.org EMAIL ARTICLEPRINT ARTICLEMOST POPULAR Skip to remaining content Main navigation menu: Home World US Europe UK Asia-Pacific Middle East &
