- War Crimes Suspect May Be Next Kosovo PM - New York Times March 2, 2006 War - Crimes Suspect May Be Next Kosovo PM By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Filed at 9:17 a.m. ET PRISTINA, Serbia-Montenegro (AP) -- A former rebel commander accused of war crimes by Belgrade was asked Thursday to head Kosovo's new government in a move that could further strain already tense ties with Serbia. Kosovo's president, Fatmir Sejdiu, issued a statement calling on Lt. Gen. Agim Ceku -- a former leader of the now disbanded Kosovo Liberation Army -- to become prime minister and form a new government. Kosovo's parliament will convene in coming days to approve the new coalition government. The province's prime minister resigned on Wednesday. The government overhaul comes just days after the start of sensitive U.N.-sponsored talks on whether Kosovo will gain full independence or remain part of Serbia. Serbian officials earlier Thursday had called Ceku's possible appointment a provocation and a sign that Kosovo's position was hardening in the talks on the province's future. ''It shows that the ethnic Albanians have turned away from a possible compromise and toward a radical stand in the Kosovo talks,'' Goran Bogdanovic, a member of the Serbian delegation to the U.N. talks told Belgrade's B-92 radio. said Ceku he was ready to assume power: ''If I am asked to do it, I am ready to give my contribution for the good of Kosovo,'' he said after meeting with top U.N. official Soren Jessen-Petersen who, he said, had offered him ''full support'' if elected. Ceku, 44, sided with Croatia's army in their fight against Serbs during the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. Serbian officials have accused him of committing war crimes against Serb civilians and have issued an arrest warrant. Ceku, former rebel commander of the now disbanded Kosovo Liberation Army, denies any wrongdoing. The KLA guerrilla force fought Serb troops during the province's 1998-1999 war. Ceku currently heads the Kosovo Protections Corps, a civil emergency organization which ethnic Albanian view as the core of their future army. Kosovo has been administered by the United Nations since 1999, and talks aim to resolve its status by the end of the 2006. Serbian leaders in Belgrade want to keep at least some control over the province, which has been a de-facto U.N. protectorate since the end of the war. Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority is demanding full independence. Copyright 2006 The Associated Press Home Privacy Policy Search Corrections XML Help Contact Us Work for Us Site Map Back to Top
