A sudden spike in gas prices has led to a 10 percent increase in the price of basic food products in Tajikistan, RFE/RL's Tajik Service reported on 26 September. The price of one liter of 96-octane gasoline in Dushanbe has risen from 1.8 somonis on 22 September to 3 somonis (), with similar price rises in other parts of the country. Officials at the state-run gas Naftrason company said that the price hike has resulted from the rising cost of petroleum products in Russia, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, which provide the bulk of Tajikistan's fuel imports.
