Sight SEEing SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO: Foreign Investors Call for Better Implementation of New Legislation 2005-03-02 17:37:17 The Foreign Investment Council (FIC), which presented its annual white book on the investment climate in Serbia, stressed the need for better implementation of the newly adopted legislation and in particular the new bankruptcy law. FIC added that the Serbian authorities should improve the infrastructure (in particular road and telecom networks) and find solution for land ownership problems in order to create more favourable environment for inflows of foreign investments. The council underlined the decline in FDI last year and stressed that acceleration of the reforms awas needed so that investments are increased. The positive feasibility study on EU integration will be very important to this end. FIC head Mike Ahern expressed the disappointment of the members of the council with the new labour law underlining that it was less flexible than the previous one. On positive the side, FIC pointed the signing of free trade agreements with countries from the region as well as the VAT introduction. The government was praised for the start of the privatisation in the banking sector. Speaking before the FIC, deputy PM Miroljub Labus outlined the positive feasibility study, reduction of the trade gap and acceleration of privatisation and restructuring of major state-owned enterprises as priorities for the cabinet in 2005.
