Apply mathematical analysis in mechanics of materials for designing structural and mechanical components (PO1, PO2, PO3, PO4, PO7) 2. Analyze multiple/combined loads in two- and three-dimensional parts and perform stress analysis in axial, torsion, bending, and transverse loading conditions(PO1, PO2, PO3, PO4, PO7) 3. Evaluate and calculate stress concentration in complex geometrical parts. (PO1, PO2, PO3, PO4, PO7) 4. Apply design factor/safety factor in designing structural and mechanical components. (PO1, PO2, PO3, PO4, PO7) 5. Translate structural and mechanical component problems into free body diagrams and establish equivalent equations. (PO1, PO2, PO4). 6. Describe strain-stress curves in material tensile tests. . (PO1, PO2, PO4, PO7) 7. Evaluate and calculate material characteristics from strain-stress curves.. (PO1, PO3, PO4, PO7) 8. Explain and interpret the fatigue test and correlate it with the real case . (PO1, PO2, PO4, PO7) Assessment: 2 sets of homework @ 10 points each 20 % 2 exams @ 15 points each 30 % Laboratory 25 % (20% written report, 5% oral presentation) Final 25 exam % No late homework will be accepted, as solution will be handed out on the day the homework is due. You are allowed to bring one aid-sheet (8.5 x11 both sides). Exam dates can be moved forward or back on meeting day by class vote Wayne State University Engineering Technology 8/9/2005 BSET-MCT Program Outcomes 1. A firm foundation in mathematics and sciences required for the understanding, application, and development of mechanical engineering technology principles 2. Technical expertise in engineering materials, statics, dynamics, strength of materials, fluid power or fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and instrumentation electronics 3. Technical expertise having added technical depth in at least three subject areas chosen from: manufacturing processes, mechanical design, fluids, and thermal sciences. 4. Expertise in applied mechanics, plus added technical topics in physics and inorganic. 5. The ability to communicate effectively in oral, written, visual, and graphical modes in both interpersonal and group environments. 6. The attitudes, abilities, and skills required to adapt to rapidly changing technologies and the ability to pursue life-long learning. 7. An understanding of all aspects of the design process and project management including functional and esthetic considerations 8. A well-developed sense of ethics, global issues, professional and social responsibility and a respect for diversity. 9. The skills and attitudes necessary to work successfully as a member of a team.
