Emphasizes the historical development of the Jewish nation from Abraham until the end of the wilderness wandering. BIB 112 Historical Books (2) A study of the nation of Israel including the entry into Palestine, the conquest of the land, the period of the judges, and the development of the monarchy in Israel until the intertestamental period. BIB 121 The Gospels (2) Begins with a survey of the intertestamental period followed by a study of the first four books of the New Testament, in particular the life and teachings of Christ. The Passion Week is given special emphasis. BIB 122 Acts and Pauline Epistles (2) A study of the Book of Acts and the Pauline Epistles. Emphasizes the history and development of each of the early churches in the Book of Acts. BIB 136 Life of Moses (2) A study of the career of Moses as recorded in the historical books of the Old Testament. Selected Psalms that correspond to Moses life are also studied for their historical contributions and devotional significance. BIB 211 O.T. Wisdom and Poetic Books (2) A study of the Old Testament poetic books Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon. 78 Department of Bible and Pastoral Theology BIB 212 Major and Minor Prophets (2) A study of the Old Testament prophets, emphasizing the messages of the major and minor prophets. BIB 221 General Epistles and Revelation (2) A study of Hebrews stressing the superiority of Christ to the Old Testament institutions. A review of the basic doctrine of the general epistles. Study of the Book of Revelation from a premillennial, pretribulational point of view. BIB 234 Life of David (2) A study of the career of David, the second king of Israel, as recorded in the historical books of the Old Testament. Selected Psalms that correspond to Davids life are also studied for their historical contributions and devotional significance. BIB 244 Life of Christ (3) A chronological study of Christs life. Special emphasis will be given to major events, discourses, miracles, parables, and the passion week. Since background information greatly enhances ones understanding of the Gospels, features such as first century social and political groups, geography, and archaeology will be discussed. BIB 285 Johannine Epistles (2) An exegetical study of the letters of John. Special emphasis will be given to the individual themes of each epistle, their theology, and their relationship to the Gospel of John. BIB 305 Bible Geography (2) A study of the historical geography of the Bible lands with special attention to the land of Israel. BIB 321 Pastoral Epistles (2) An expositional study of Pauls inspired instructions concerning the challenge, responsibilities, qualifications, and message of the Christian ministry. BIB 331 Old Testament Women (2) A study of Old Testament women, emphasizing their roles in Scripture as well as character traits essential to being a godly woman. For women students only. BIB 332 New Testament Women (2) A study of how God worked in and through New Testament Women. For women students only. BIB 340 Romans (3) A systematic exposition of this doctrinal epistle, emphasizing Christs completed work for the sinner and saint and its practical application to the believers life. BIB 362 Petrine Epistles (2) An exegetical study of the books of 1 and 2 Peter, focusing on the themes developed by the author. Special emphasis will be given to the role of suffering in the life of the believer and the ethical imperatives placed upon them. BIB 363 Galatians (3) An exegetical study of the book of Galatians. Special emphasis will be given to the different theories of destination, the date and relationship of Galatians to the other books of the New Testament, the Galatian error, the theme of grace, and Pauls view of the Law. BIB 366 Colossians and Philemon (3) An exegetical study of the epistles of Colossians and Philemon. Special emphasis will be given to the background, setting, themes, theology, and issues of these books. BIB 365 Ephesians (2) An exegetical study of the book of Ephesians. Special emphasis will be given to the theological and practical ramifications of this book for today. Emphases will include the doctrines of the church, grace, and election, as well as the outworking of theological truth in the life of the believer. BIB 382 James (2) An exegetical study of the book of James. BIB 436 Daniel and Revelation (3) An expositional study demonstrating the integration of the prophecies of Daniel with their fulfillment in Revelation. BIB 440 1 Corinthians (3) A study of Pauls instructions concerning church division, practical Christian living, marriage and divorce, Christian liberty, the gifts of the Spirit, the place of Christian love, and the importance of the Resurrection to the definition of the Gospel. BIB 471 Isaiah (3) A chapterbychapter study of the book of Isaiah. Special emphasis will be given to the historical setting of the book, the prophet himself, the themes of redemption and of the Messiah, as well as other prophetic implications. BIB 472 Minor Prophets (2) This course will take an indepth look at the books of HoseaMalachi. Special consideration will be given to the style, content, and themes contained in these important books of Scripture. Helpful suggestions will also be given on how to preach expository messages from the Minor Prophets. BIB 451-456, 471476 Old Testament Bible Analysis (23) Indepth studies of individual Old Testament books offered periodically. PSY 202 Child and Adolescent Psychology (3) A study of the physical, emotional, and intellectual development of the child from infancy through adolescence to maturity and how these stages relate to spiritual growth, home life, and school. PSY 221 Principles of Counseling (2) Prerequisite PSY 121 A study of basic counseling principles and elementary procedures for biblical counseling. This course is designed to equip the student with basic biblical models to use in solving counseling problems. PSY 222 Biblical Counseling (2) A study of more complex problems in counseling, using specific case studies, lecture, and discussion. Counseling skills dealing with issues such as child abuse, suicide, eating disorders, stress, pain, and grief will be biblically examined and developed. PSY 241 Interpersonal Relationships (2) A study of biblical principles for interrelating with God, family, employers, employees, neighbors, fellow workers, and the opposite sex. PSY 315 Social Psychology (2) An analysis of human behavior from a biblical perspective. It includes personality and motivation in professional, societal, and personal contexts. PSY 341 Theories of Counseling (3) A study of secular counseling and various Christian counselors emphasizing the proponents of different theories and how their ideas are viewed in the light of Scripture. PSY 352 Counseling for the Christian Worker (3) Prerequisite PSY 221 The intent of this course is to prepare the student to counsel people in a local church setting. This course addresses the typical Counseling and Psychology PSY 121 Foundations for Biblical Living (3) An introduction to the essentials of biblical counseling. A counseling philosophy and basic models for biblical change are presented, with 80 Department of Bible and Pastoral Theology counseling problems that occur in daily life. Instruction in assurance of salvation, solving conflicts, overcoming difficult circumstances, and controlling habits is the special focus of this course. THG 202 Systematic Theology II (3) A study of the doctrines of Theology, Christology, and Pneumatology. THG 222 Biblical Hermeneutics (2) The science of scriptural interpretation, emphasizing the principle of the Bible as its own interpreter. THG 236 Fundamentalism (2) A study of the development of Fundamentalism from the 19th century to the present. The basic theology and unique theological contributions of the various branches of the movement are stressed. THG 301 Systematic Theology III (3) A study of Anthropology, Hamartiology, and Soteriology. THG 302 Systematic Theology IV (3) A study of Ecclesiology and Eschatology. Emphasis is placed on the church, its ordinances, and its officers. Approaches prophecy from a premillennial, pretribulational position. THG 311 Doctrinal Survey I (3) General overviews of major doctrines of Scripture, including: Bibliology, Theology, Christology, and Pneumatology. THG 312 Doctrinal Survey II (3) General over views of major doctrines o f S c r i p t u re , i n c l u d i n g : A n g e l o l o g y, Anthropology, Hamartiology, Soteriology, Ecclesiology, and Eschatology. THG 341 Apologetics (2) A study designed to prepare students to defend, justify, and confirm the claims of Christianity before men. The course focuses on the material and means by which Christians can answer the most common arguments against Christianity. A presuppositional position is maintained and defended. THG 402 Christian Ethics (2) An examination of the moral issues of the day in relationship to the Word of God and Christian experience. PSY 411 Abnormal Psychology (2) A study of human behavioral problems and how they are diagnosed and treated. Emphasis is placed on the biblical principles that affect diagnosis and treatment. PSY 431, 432 Case Studies I and II (2 each) Prerequisite PSY 221 These courses are advanced counseling courses designed to provide an indepth examination of major counseling problems. The student is enabled to confront biblically in both a ministry and clinical setting. PSY 442 Marriage Counseling (2) Prerequisite PSY 221 A consideration of complex problems in counseling married couples using specific case studies, lecture, and discussion. This course is particularly designed for ministerial students who will counsel in areas of moral, marital, and ministerial need. Philosophy PHI 421 Introduction to Philosophy (3) A treatment of the major philosophies and an analysis of the process of human reasoning evaluated in the light of Scripture. Theology THG 201 Systematic Theology I (3) A study of the doctrine of revelation, including natural and special revelation, based on the premise that the Bible, verbally and plenarily inspired by God, is mans only authority for faith and practice. Emphasizes the importance of dispensations, biblical covenants, and angelology. 81 Northland Baptist Bible College THG 413 Reformation Theology (3) A study of the theology developed and stressed during the Reformation. The major doctrines and unique contributions of key men involved in the Reformation are studied. THG 415 Baptist Theology (2) A study of the history and development of Baptist theology. It will begin with an exegetical analysis of what makes Baptists distinct. THG 422 Contemporary Theology (2) An examination of current trends in theology. Major emphasis is given to Fundamentalism, Neoevangelicalism, NeoOrthodoxy, PostBultmannianism, Punnenberg theology, and NeoLiberalism. Special topics such as open theism, ECT, and sign gifts are covered as well. THG 424 History of Doctrine (3) A study of the progress of doctrinal formation from A.D. 1001516. Key councils, individuals, and events that contributed to the systematization of various doctrines are emphasized. THG 432 Theology of the Pentateuch (2) An indepth study of Genesis 111 with an emphasis on the biblical theology and contemporary relevance of this seedplot of Scripture. THG 462 Modern Cults (3) A study of the major cults of the modern era, such as Mormonism, Christian Science, and Jehovahs Witnesses. Designed to provide the student with information that will enable him to understand, refute, and evangelize those involved in the cults. Other minor cults are summarized. CHU 202 Childrens Ministries (2) A study of the various childrens ministries available to the local church, including childrens clubs, childrens church, and bus ministries. The development of a childrens ministry philosophy is considered, with the development of a mission statement for this ministry. The course gives practical experience in developing skills to reach children. CHU 211 Sunday School Teaching Methods (2) A study of the various methods and techniques of teaching Sunday school. Includes principles of writing Sunday school materials on various grade levels. Special emphasis is given to materials for the preteen years. CHU 301 Technology in Ministry (2) Explores the practical uses of technology in ministry. Lecture and handson training in Bible study and church management software as well as various digital and multimedia tools. The power and pitfalls of the Internet in ministry are discussed. 96 Department of Church Ministries CHU 302 Sunday School Administration (2) A comprehensive study of the organization, mechanics, and administration of a productive and wellordered Sunday school. Planning, implementation, teaching, attendance increase, materials, leadership, and training in personal visitation are considered. CHU 402 Summer Bible Ministries (2) A study of the history of Vacation Bible School and its current contribution to the local church. Consideration is given to curriculum, activities, and promotion. Other summer ministries are discussed. CHU 405 Christian Education of Adults (2) A study of the characteristics and educational needs of adults in the local church. The course provides methods for instructing, discipling, and encouraging spiritual growth. CHU 499 Church Ministries Internship (3) Practical training in local church ministry is arranged with a local church pastor and coordinated through Northland. An evaluation from the pastor and a written report from the student are submitted on a regular basis to the department chair. YTH 306 Training Youth Leaders (2) An analysis of the training of youth leaders. Emphasis on training adults to work with teens. YTH 397 Youth Workers Seminar (2) Youth Workers Seminar is held in March each year at THE WILDS Christian Camp and Conference Center in Brevard, North Carolina. Attendance arrangements may be made through the department chair. YTH 399 Youth Lab Outreach (1) A practical course in which the student is involved in an actual youth program under the supervision of a pastor and the college staff. YTH 401 Youth Pastor (2) Prerequisite YTH 201 A study of the youth pastors heart relationship to the pastor, his ministry to homes, and his coping with hardheartedness in a youth group. YTH 403 Influencing Troubled Youth (2) Gives biblical guidelines for dealing with difficult problem areas, such as dating, rebellion, drugs, broken homes, music, abortion, and homosexuality. YTH 499 Youth Internship (3) Practical training in youth work is arranged with a local church pastor and coordinated through Northland. An evaluation from the pastor and a written report from the student are submitted on a regular basis to the department chair. Youth Ministries YTH 201 Foundations of Youth (3) Designed to help students formulate a biblical philosophy of youth work.
