155A MAE Aero Winter 2009 Jan 29, 2009 Due Feb 5 1. Chapter 5: A mission analysis program produces the following values of maximum takeoff gross weight (MTOGW) [lb] for a commercial aircraft to perform a transcontinental mission. Ref. Wing Loading (W/S) [lb/sq.ft] 120 130 140 Ref. Thrust/Weight Ratio (T/W) 0.34 0.36 235,500 247,800 223,600 234,800 216,000 226,000 0.32 227,000 215,500 209,000 The aircraft must meet a takeoff and landing field length of 7000 ft. on a standard day at sea level. Maximum landing weight (MLW) is 90% of MTOGW. Design characteristics are: Two engines CLmax(takeoff) = 2.2 CLmax(landing) = 2.8 Use Figure 5.4 for takeoff field length (TOFL) estimation. Use CLmax(takeoff) in the takeoff parameter. Do NOT divide it by 1.21 as suggested in Raymer s text. Use Eq. 5.11 for landing calculations. Factor Slanding X 1.67 to find landing field length (LFL) required. Draw a carpet plot to show values of MTOGW as a function of reference T/W and W/S. Superimpose constraint lines of TOFL and LFL. A small of amount extrapolation of carpet lines may be required. Use http://www.adac.aero/Documents/Carpet_Plots.pdf for guidance on generating the carpet plot (there s an underscore between Carpet and Plots , Ignore other performance constraints (such as climb gradient requirements). Submit the carpet plot and constraint lines on a single sheet of 8 X 11 paper. The minor grid lines must have intervals such that the user of the carpet plot can easily interpolate between major grid line values. What is the minimum value of MTOGW to perform the mission which meets the TOFL and LFL requirements? 2009/01/27 2009 Anthony P Hays 1 2. Chapter 6: Estimate the horizontal and vertical tail areas for a twin-turboprop regional transport with the following characteristics: Sref = 400 sq ft. AR = 10 = 0.5 LHT = 30 ft LVT = 30 ft where LHT and LVT are the distances from the chord of the wing MAC to the chord of the MACs of the horizontal and vertical tails. 2009/01/27 2009 Anthony P Hays 2
