Education General Segment III Cluster Exploring the Future: Next 20 Years General Education, Segment III Rules: To receive Segment III credit for a course approved for Segment III, a student must complete the cluster as described in the Class Schedule and Bulletin, including the requirement that they must have earned 60 units by the end of the semester in which they take the course. Students must complete all four GE Segment I requirements (i.e. written communication, oral communication, critical thinking, and quantitative reasoning) before beginning Segment III. Segment III courses are required to include a minimum of 10 pages of writing corrected by the instructor. Students must complete at least one course in the Segment III cluster that fulfills the Cultural, Ethnic, or Social Diversity (CESD) Requirement. At least one course in the Segment III cluster must be both outside the major department and outside the major program submitted on the Application for Graduation. Cluster Theme: The cluster will address topics that focus on the foreseeable and immediate futurethe next twenty years. The cluster will place particular emphasis on elements within our control and the resulting impact on quality of life. Students will examine the present and changing nature of leisure, work, time, human productivity, environment, and lifestyles among dominant and non-dominant groups. Students will explore the potential impacts of future environmental, political, economic, technological, population, and urbanization issues. Learning Outcomes for the Cluster: 1. Examine issues related to the future of our society in terms of leisure, work, time, environment, technology, and lifestyles from a multitude interdisciplinary of perspectives. 2. Analyze a multitude of viewpoints from a minimum of two different departments necessitating different perspectives. 3. Apply and integrate forecasting methodologies and techniques, and scientific approaches to scholarly inquiry to answer questions and develop solutions to issues confronting individuals and society in the next 20 years. 4. Participate in critical analysis and discussions associated with exploring the future, and to complete ten pages of writing in the context of issues related to the next 20 years. 5. Appreciate and discuss the potential societal impacts of the next 20 years on cultural, sub-cultural, ethnic, and non-dominant groups.
