Civilization, Islamic Information Sheet, Page1 General Education Segment III Cluster Islamic Civilization General Education, Segment III Rules: To receive Segment III credit for a course approved for Segment III, a student must complete the cluster as described in the Class Schedule and Bulletin, including the requirement that they must have earned 60 units by the end of the semester in which they take the course. Students must complete all four GE Segment I requirements (i.e. written communication, oral communication, critical thinking, and quantitative reasoning) before beginning Segment III. Segment III courses are required to include a minimum of 10 pages of writing corrected by the instructor. Students must complete at least one course in the Segment III cluster that fulfills the Cultural, Ethnic, or Social Diversity (CESD) Requirement. At least one course in the Segment III cluster must be both outside the major department and outside the major program submitted on the Application for Graduation. Cluster Theme: Islamic Civilization introduces students to the complex of social relations, material products and intellectual and philosophical discourses that cross the vast historical and geographical area where Muslims have been in the majority. Students will be able to recognize the historical and cultural relationships and divergences between the multiple cultures subsumed within Islamic Civilization, including Arab, Persian, Turkish, Bengali, Punjabi, Sindhi, Maghribi (North African), West African, Central Asian, Southeast Asian, and more recently, European and American sub-cultures, just to mention a few. Furthermore, by distinguishing Islamic civilization from Islam itself, students will be able to critically discuss Islam as a civilizational force that has been shared, shaped, absorbed and contested by a number of non-Muslim congregations, including Jews, Armenians, Eastern and Western Christians, Zoroastrians, Copts, and Gypsies. The cluster on Islamic Civilization assures that students become acquainted with the religion and culture of Islam as a unifying force but which, when studied in its historic Islamic Civilization, Information Sheet, Page2 context, demands an assessment of its political, social, and ethnic, aesthetic and geographic diversity. By choosing among three types of classes, students will become familiar with large historic trends and smaller, local or discourse related developments, and thus be able to critically evaluate the multivalent role of Islam historically and in the present. Learning Outcomes for the Cluster: 1. Students will acquire knowledge of and be able to discuss a wide variety of cultures and traditions subsumed under the important contemporary topic Islam. 2. Students will acquire knowledge of and be able to discuss the complex and diverse pietistic and intellectual traditions subsumed under the important contemporary topic Islam. 3. Students be able to evaluate and suggest how and why Islamic Civilization resonates differently for different social groups. 4. Students will obtain a close critical understanding of a specific region or tradition that is subsumed within Islamic Civilization.
