Undergraduate MINUTES Policy Committee Meeting February 14, 2007 Members Present: Michael Allen, Al Bathke, John Bruno, Rinn Cloud, Andrew Epstein, Cecil Greek, Lois Hawkes, Pat Hollis, Aaron Lan, Sandra Lewis, Tim Matherly, Tom McCaleb, Donna Nudd, Greg Riccardi, Phil Steinberg, Paul Strait, Jim Tull. Ex-Officio: Karen Laughlin. Members Absent: Roxanne Hauber, Kim Maddox, Val Richard, Gail Rubini. I. Approval of Agenda Sandy Lewis called the meeting to order at 3:35 p.m. The agenda for the meeting was approved with the addition of an update by Donna Nudd on a course previously submitted for OCCR. II. Approval of Minutes from January 17, 2007 The minutes from the January 17, 2007 meeting were approved. III. New Business: 1. Liberal Studies Area V Course Review Nutrition, Food, and Exercise Science Dr. Jenice Rankins HUN 1201: The Science of Nutrition Dr. Rankins provided a handout to members summarizing her research on HUN 1201 (addendum to minutes). The course is required of all majors in Nutrition, Food, and Exercise Science and is also taken by majors in Nursing, Family and Child Sciences, and other majors in Human Sciences. Sections are also available for Honors and Living/Learning Communities. Members voiced two concerns: 1) the number of sections taught by TAs, and 2) whether the concept of liberal studies is emphasized in the course syllabus or by instructors. Dr. Rankins indicated that faculty do teach the course also, including herself, and that she is the coordinator who supervises the TAs. She also agreed that the emphasis on liberal studies can easily be incorporated into the course syllabus. UPC members voted to continue approval of HUN 1201 for Liberal Studies Area V credit. Oceanography Dr. William Dewar ISC 2003X: Global Change: Its Scientific and Human Dimension OCE 1001: Elementary Oceanography Dr. Dewar provided a handout to members summarizing the two courses in his department which receive Area V credit OCE 1001 and ISC 2003X (addendum to minutes). Both courses can be taken by non-majors. ISC 2003 also carries Multicultural X credit because it examines how global warming affects native Arctic peoples. Both courses are taught by tenured and tenure track faculty. Honors and Bryan Hall sections are available for OCE 1001. UPC members voted to continue approval of ISC 2003X and OCE 1001 for Liberal Studies Area V credit and of ISC 2003X for Multicultural X credit. 2. Courses Submitted for Approval Multicultural Understanding (John Bruno, Chair; Al Bathke; Cecil Greek) ADV 3410: Hispanic Marketing Communication John Bruno reported that no additional materials have been submitted for this course, so it should be removed from consideration until that occurs. Computer Competency (Lois Hawkes, Chair; Aaron Lan, Greg Riccardi, Gail Rubini) CGS 2082: Computer Use in Communication Disorders Lois reported that subcommittee members recommend approval of the course. Cheryl Oakley will contact the department to clarify whether the course can be taken by nonmajors. Members voted to APPROVE CGS 2082 for computer competency credit effective Fall 2007. Oral Communication Competency (Donna Nudd, Chair; Rinn Cloud; Pat Hollis) ARH 3800: Methods of Art Criticism ARH 4810: Art History Methods and Media Donna Nudd reported that she received feedback from Art History regarding the two courses. The revisions that Donna suggested cannot be accommodated by the department, therefore the courses are being withdrawn from consideration for oral communication competency credit. 3. Request from Mechanical Engineering to Change Final Exam Time for Two Courses Sandy received a request from the Department of Mechanical Engineering to change the final exam dates/times for EML 3016C and EML 3014C. Approximately 98 Engineering students share the same class schedule which would result in three exams occurring on the same day. The request would move one exam to Monday and one to Thursday, thereby allowing students a better opportunity to perform well. The department will work with any FSU student who experiences a conflict if the change is approved. The UPC voted to APPROVE the request to move EML 3016C to Thursday and EML 3014C to Monday of FSU s final exam week. 4. Request from Business to Remove CGS 2064 as an Approved Course for Computer Competency Joe Icerman emailed Sandy informing the UPC that Business does not wish for CGS 2064: Computer Literacy II to be listed as an approved course for its majors for computer competency. Tom McCaleb stated that the same request would also apply to Economics majors. Ken Baldauf of the Computer Science Department has verified that the course does not contain the business applications that CGS 2100 does. Appropriate wording changes will be made to the pertinent sections of the Undergraduate Bulletin. IV. Old Business: 1. Consideration of Grade Reform Issues and Information Literacy Issue Presented by Dr. Ahlquist Sandy reported that the Faculty Senate Steering Committee met earlier today and discussed the issues presented by Dr. Ahlquist at our January meeting. Members not are inclined to pursue any action on these unless the UPC wishes to make a proposal. UPC members did not indicate any desire to further investigate the grade reform issues. An exception is the information literacy issue which will be forwarded for consideration by the Liberal Studies Committee. 2. Wording of Grading Statement for W Designation, Computer Competency, and Oral Communication Competency Donna Nudd passed out a revision to the OCCR criteria which includes an amended statement regarding grading criteria. The statement is as follows: The course syllabus must contain a statement that a student s final course grade must be a C- or better to fulfill FSU s OCCR (Oral Communication Competency Requirement). In addition, the course syllabus must contain a statement that satisfactory completion of the oral competence portion of the course is required to receive an overall grade of C- or higher in the course. If a student does not earn a C- or better in the oral competency portion of the course, the student will not earn an overall grade of C- or better in the course, no matter how well the student performs in the remaining portions of the course. UPC members voted to APPROVE this wording revision for courses receiving the W designation, computer competency credit, and oral communication competency credit. The meeting was adjourned at 5:02 p.m. Remaining Meetings: March 14, 2007 April 11, 2007 Department of Oceanography Liberal Studies Course Review Area V: Natural Sciences February 14, 2007 Oceanography has two courses that qualify for Liberal Studies Area V credit, OCE1001 Elementary Oceanography (3cr) and ISC2003 Global Change, It s Scientific and Human Dimensions (3 cr). ISC2003 also qualifies for Multicultural X credit. The department has reviewed several examples of the syllabi from each course. Syllabi from the same course are consistent in content and are consistent with the overall educational criteria outlined for Liberal Studies Natural Science courses. OCE1001 Elementary Oceanography (Liberal Studies Science) OCE1001 Elementary Oceanography is taught by tenured and tenure track faculty. It is designed specifically for non-science students to fulfill the requirements of a liberal studies science course. It is offered each semester including summer. In Fall and Spring we offer multiple large sections (250+) plus a smaller honors only section. Summer is usually a small class (about 30). The department has a pool of faculty from each sub discipline that rotate the teaching duties with teams of two sharing the large classes each semester. Faculty teach the half of the course that corresponds to their sub discipline in order to make best use of their expertise. The graduate student TA s that act as graders and tutors are also drawn one from each sub discipline. Individual professors teach the honors and small sections. The material covered in the course represents the breadth of and highlights the interdisciplinary nature of the field of oceanography. Modules include, global climate (el Nino, plate tectonics), evolution of life on the planet and marine life (weird deep sea creatures, whales and dolphins). Students are introduced to the serious science behind these and other topics. They learn how scientific methods are employed in oceanographic research. Because of the size of most of the sections the instructors make use of lectures, a course web site, readings from the text, demonstrations, topical movies, homework and in class quizzes to maintain student involvement. Student evaluations of this course are always favorable. ISC2003 Global Change, It s Scientific and Human Dimensions (Liberal Studies Science and Multicultural X) ISC2003 Global Change is designed as an introduction to the science of climate change, it s impact on humans and humans impact on climate. The course introduces the use of scientific methods used to recognize and attempt to understand climate variability, past, present and future. While the focus of the first half of the course is on the scientific aspects the second half looks at the human dimension; political policy and how climate change has influenced the biological and cultural development of the human species. Most recently, the class examined the effects of the warming climate in the polar region on the traditional way of life of native Arctic peoples. Students then answered essay questions as a homework assignment. Typically kept to about 40 students to facilitate discussion by students it has always been a very popular course. It was developed and taught by professor Jack Winchester who is now retired and recently has not been offered quite so regularly. That will be remedied in the near future. Thorsten Dittmar, Assistant Professor, has enthusiastically taken responsibility for this course. It may grow in size to accommodate the growing student interest in the subject. Students are kept engaged with lectures, class discussion, student projects and presentations, readings on current events, and homework assignments.
