Carol Ph.D.; From University of Michigan, - Over the past twelve years, my research has focused on examining the links between children s language and literacy development. Most recently, my research interests have focused on children s learning in the classroom from preschool through third grade. These studies indicate that the effectiveness of specific instructional activities may depend on the language and reading skills children bring with them to school; these child-by-instruction interactions are evident as early as preschool and continue at least through third grade for a number of child language and literacy outcomes. I am currently the principal investigator conducting a series of randomized control field trials investigating the causal effects of individualizing language arts instruction and science instruction in first through third grade based on students language and early reading skills. This multidisciplinary project includes experts in developmental and cognitive psychology, education, learning sciences, and computer science. Results reveal that instruction that takes into account child-by-instruction interactions leads to stronger student literacy outcomes. I also conduct research focusing on the language and literacy development of profoundly deaf children including those who use cochlear implants. Southerland examines the fundamental discord between science-education reform efforts and the current accountability movement in schools, and has offered ways in which science educators can work to help teachers and their students despite these contradictions. In another aspect of her research, Southerland studies the learning of nonmainstream learners, a group traditionally underserved by science instruction. Focusing on classroom dynamics, Southerland works to understand the ebbs and flows between group discussion and individual learning. Her work here as well as in her description of learning of biological evolution highlights the importance of affective, extra rational commitments upon what students come to understand about science. Southerland has coauthored two books about reformed based science teaching, over 30 articles in national and international peer reviewed journals, and currently has a 2.4 million dollar NSF grant focusing on teachers and inquiry based teaching. - Science Section Chair, Division C, Program Committee, American Educational Research Association (2009).
