Catalog Course Description A hands-on introduction to operating systems and tools. Systems administration experience with Linux, Unix, or Windows. Concepts of processor management and scheduling, memory management, file systems. Prerequisites: CS 3011 Course Outcomes 1. Expertise in the installation, maintenance, and tuning of a modern operating system a. b. c. d. Install a widely used operating system and customize it according to a variety of specifications. Upgrade and maintain the operating system with current patches and enhancements.
Relationship to Program Outcomes CS 3221 is a required course for IS&T majors that is taken after successful completion of the systems software and hardware course. This course contributes to the meeting the following objectives: c. Students understand the fundamentals of computer organization and architecture, data structures and related algorithms, and programming languages. Students spend considerable time examining and modifying the kernel of the Linux operating system, which is a very complex software system that involves concurrent processes, interrupts, and complicated data structures, to name but a few challenges. d. Students can apply computer science principles and practices to a variety of problems. Operating system software is characterized by sophisticated and extensive use of dynamic data structures. Students must understand such data structures in order to complete their programming assignments. Operating systems software touches upon various hardware issues at time, so fundamentals of organization computer and architecture are reinforced. e. Students can work independently and also work effectively in teams. Students work independently and on teams throughout the semester. The individual and team experiences include both programming and system administration assignments.
