Theaward,namedforaformerdeanofGeneralCollege,ismadepossiblethrough generoussupportoftheUniversityofMinnesotaAlumniAssociationandtheOfficeof theSeniorVicePresidentforAcademicAffairsandProvost. Eligibility Regularfaculty(tenuretrackandtenured)andtermfaculty(nonregular)salariedthrough theUniversityandholdinga662/3%timeorgreaterappointment,whohavebeenatthe UniversityofMinnesotaforatleastfiveyears,includingthecurrentyear,maybe nominatedfortheMorseAlumniAward.Previousnomineeswhodidnotreceivethe awardmayberenominated;previouswinnersareineligible. Selfnominationisnotallowed. Forthepurposesofthisaward,undergraduatesaredefinedasstudentswhoarepursuinga baccalaureateoranassociatedegreeprogram.Professionalandgraduateprograms,if theyoffereducationtoundergraduates,areencouragedtonominatecandidates. Awards Duringthe200809academicyear,uptoeightUniversityofMinnesotafacultymembers willbeselectedtoreceivetheMorseAlumniAwardwiththeannouncementofaward recipientstobemademidMarch.Recipientswillreceivea$3,000continuous augmentationtotheirannualsalaryduringtheirlifetimeasaUniversityofMinnesota facultymember.Inaddition,eachrecipient'sdepartmentwillbegiven$1,500annually 1 August2008 forfiveyearstobeusedbytherecipientforprofessionaldevelopmentorresearch. NominationswillbeevaluatedbytheMorseAlumniAwardSelectionCommittee,which reportstotheSenateCommitteeonEducationalPolicy(SCEP),andiscomposedofat leasteightfaculty,oneormorestudentmembersoftheSenateCommitteeonEducational Policy,andarepresentativeoftheUniversityofMinnesotaAlumniAssociation,allof whom,whenfeasible,servethreeyearterms.Ofthefacultymembers: atleastonemustbeacurrentmemberoftheSenateCommitteeonEducational Policy onemustcomefromeachofthecoordinatecampuses(foratotalofthree coordinatecampusesrepresentatives;nomorethanonepercampus) atleasttwomustbeformerawardwinners Criteria Nomineeswillbeevaluatedonthebasisofadossierdocumentingoutstanding contributionstoundergraduateeducation.Thedossiershouldprovidespecificevidence ofoutstandingperformanceinoneormorenotnecessarilyallofthefivecategories listedbelow: 1. Teaching:directcontactwithstudentsinundergraduatecoursesandprograms andincocurricularactivities.Teachingactivitiesincludeinstructinggroupsofstudents inclasses,seminars,andlaboratories;andsupervisingindividualactivities,suchas practicums,internships,fieldlearningexperiences,tutorials,performances,exhibitions, andindependentstudy,includingsupervisionofUROPprojects.Theactivitieslisted abovearerepresentative,notexhaustive. 2. Advising:activitiesthataidindividualstudentswithcourseandmajorselection, careerplans,andpersonaldevelopment,especiallyinwaysthatgobeyondformal curricularadvising;andthosethatprovideguidancetostudentorganizationsorgroups. Documentationshouldincludeinformationaboutaccessibilitytostudents,which ordinarilyincludesbutisnotlimitedtoofficeavailability.1 3. ResearchandArtisticActivities:suchactivitiesshouldbedocumentedand discussedintermsoftherelationshipbetweentheseactivitiesandthenominee's Whereadvisingistheexclusiveorprimarycontribution,acandidateshouldbenominatedinstead,or perhapsinaddition,fortheJohnTateAwardforUndergraduateAcademicAdvising. 1 2 August2008 contributionstoundergraduateeducation. 4. EducationalLeadership:extraprogrammaticactivitiesofanykindandatany levelthatconstituteleadershipandcontributesubstantiallytoundergraduateeducation; forexample,presentingpapers,holdingapositionsuchasnationalorregionalofficeror programchairinaprofessionalassociation,orbeingamemberofacollegeorall Universitycommittee. Thislistshouldnotbeconsideredexhaustiveorrestrictive.Theselectioncommitteewill consideranyandalloutstandingcontributionstoundergraduateeducationdescribedby thematerialsprovided.Themagnitudeofanoutstandingcontributioninoneareamay compensateforlittleornocontributioninotherareas.Forexample,notalldistinguished classroomteachershavetheopportunitytocontributeto"academicprogram development"thatpersonsinadministrativeofficesdo,buttheymay,nevertheless,make outstandingcontributionstoundergraduateeducation. Selectioncommitteeswillconsideroutstandingcontributionsrangingfrombroadly distinguishedperformanceovermanyyearstoasingleextraordinarycontributionwithout favoringonekindoveranother.Personsreceivingawardswillbethosewhose contributionstoundergraduateeducationtheselectioncommitteeconsidersthemost outstandinginagivenyearandalsogenuinelyoutstandingregardlessoftheyearorthe competition.TheUniversityofMinnesotaisaresearchuniversity,sothedossiersofall nomineesshouldincludeevidenceoftheirintellectualdistinction. SelectionofCollegeNominees Eachcollegeengagedinundergraduateeducationmaysubmituptothreenominations. Becauseofitssize,theCollegeofLiberalArtsmaysubmituptosixnominations. Collegesmaynominatefacultymembersofothercollegesaswellastheirown. The college should submit an original plus eleven copies of each candidate's dossier to the Morse-Alumni Selection Committee, 234 3 August2008 Morrill Hall, 100 Church Street S.E., Minneapolis, Minnesota 55455 by no later than 4:00 p.m., Thursday, January 22, 2009. Becauseeachcollegemayonlysubmitalimitednumberofnominations,manycolleges haveaninternalselectionprocesstochoosetheirnominees,andtherefore,havean internaldeadlinepriortotheUniversitywidedeadline.Eachcollegehasadesignated collegecontactfortheMorseAward;departments,faculty,andstudentsinterestedin submittinganominationshouldcontacttheirdesignatedcontactforinformationaboutthe collegesinternalselectionprocessanddeadlines.Foralistofdesignatedcollege contacts,pleasecontactJeremyHernandez,6126255652,herna220@umn.edu. Successful dossiers will be made available for public review and various University Minnesota of editors may publish information from these dossiers in materials regarding the Morse-Alumni Award. Dossier contents will be publicly available except for information covered by the MN Data Privacy Act. Private or personal materials should not be included as part of the dossier. Organization and Presentation of Dossiers2 The following guidelines apply to the dossiers that are submitted to the Provost's Office for the University-wide competition. Because the processes by which colleges select their nominees vary significantly, those preparing dossiers at the departmental level should contact their designated college contacts to determine what materials are required for the internal selection process. In order to maintain a similar format and appearance among dossiers, the Office of the Provost will provide report covers and pre-printed index tabs for dossiers selected by colleges for submission to the University-level competition. Dossiers MUST be prepared using materials provided; dossiers prepared with other materials will not be accepted. This policy has been implemented at the specific request of the selection committee to facilitate the review process.
