UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA APRIL 12-14, 2007 Who Should Attend Symposium Topics This Symposium engages participants in institutional strategies and best practices, individual stories and experiences, and examination of scholarship and research that focuses on recruiting, retaining, and advancing faculty of color. Proposals are strongly encouraged for sessions that provide strategies and examples to address the challenges in the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), Business, and the Health Sciences. Note: Symposium topics are not limited to those listed below. Proposals that present related topics about faculty diversity tied to race and ethnicity are invited and welcome. Personal/Individual/Group Narratives and Resources What methods have been employed by individuals to effectively navigate the system? What speed bumps in the road are encountered by diverse faculty, and what techniques or mechanisms have proven useful to surmount them? What issues are facing current faculty? And what is hindering prospective faculty from pursuing faculty roles? What are the effects of support resources such as mentoring, networking, minority professional groups, faculty/student coalitions, etc.? What methods of fostering positive organizational climate and mutual understanding have been successful? What techniques can we utilize to engage colleagues and staff in critical conversation and dialogue about the minority experience? Institutional Leadership, Strategies, Best Practices What areas have experienced successful organizational change? What best practices or models have emerged that can be applied to other disciplines, departments, institutions, etc.? Identify institutions and/or organizations fostering cultural change throughout all levels of institution. What are the implications of under-representation? Identify systemic problems facing discrete groups. Scholarship and Research What can research tell us institutional about efforts? In what ways has research been applied and implemented to achieve change? What does the research demonstrate about recruitment and retention in historically underrepresented disciplines including business; STEM fields; and the health sciences? Where and how is progress being made? What innovative strategies are being employed and what can we learn from them? Mark your calendar for this national symposium hosted by the University of Minnesota on April 12-14, 2007. Registration will be limited to 450 attendees. Description This exciting and interactive symposium, the fourth Keeping Our Faculties meeting, will Provide presentations that will energize and empower people as well as help to break down barriers to full inclusion; Offer opportunities to share narratives and experiences from individuals and discrete groups from which to discover commonalities; Share best practices for ensuring diversity from the academy, and from public and private sector organizations; Engage attendees in the development of action plans and strategies for their campuses; And present scholarly research to frame issues of faculty diversity and provide approaches and solutions. Sessions will focus on strategies that have been successfully employed to date; approaches for developing a pipeline to retain students of color and recruit and advance persons of color in academia; models for leadership to promote change; and strategies to empower faculty of color, transform institutional cultures, and produce change within and outside the academy. Persons interested in the Symposium themes include faculty, researchers, practitioners, administrators, human resource professionals, staff, graduate and professional students, and policy makers from all parts of post-secondary educationcommunity colleges, public and private four-year institutions, and universities. Persons from professional organizations, trustees, and alumni will find topics of interest that should be critical to their success with issues of diversity.
