It is a very important prerequisite, and the sequence begins only in the fall. Two b Biol 1101 (Freshman Seminar in Biological Principles) is the first course in biology that students will take. It can be taken EITHER the during fall or spring term during the first year. c Students with a weak high school mathematics background may have to enroll in Math 1101 (Pre-calculus) before enrolling in Calculus; math placement scores will help students identify the appropriate course. Students wishing to take calculus-based Physics must take two semesters of Calculus (i.e., Survey of Calculus is not sufficient). d Evolution of Biodiversity is scheduled in the spring, and can be taken during the first year if Biol 1101 has been completed. e Biological Communications should be completed either fall or spring of the third year. f Though not required for the Biology major, students planning to attend graduate or professional school should plan to take a year of Physics because it is required for many programs. General Notes: 3000-level required courses are listed in the semester taught. Students may register for them after taking the appropriate pre-requisite (Ecology pre-req is Biol 2101, Genetics pre-req is Biol 2111, Molecular Biology pre-req or co-req is Biol 3101). 4000-level courses are electives, which are typically offered every other year. Students should consult with their advisors for advice in scheduling upper-level biology courses. Pre-professional students will have additional requirements. They should consult with their advisors and the appropriate pre-professional guide to learn about these. January 2005
