522 Econ Homework Assignment 1 The University of Kansas Spring 2006 Due date: February 6, Monday 1. Numerical Problem 5, 6 in Chapter 2 (page 57 of the textbook). 2. Data Application: Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) releases data on GDP in three steps (see page 26 of your textbook). The initial estimates, known as advanced estimates of quarterly GDP, are released about a month after the end of each quarter. Revised estimates, known as preliminary estimates , are released about 1 month later, and the final figures are released about 1 month after that. For the 4th quarter of 2001, the advanced estimate was released on January 30, 2002, the preliminary estimate was released on February 28, 2002 and the final estimate was released on March 28, 2002. You can find these data at BEA s web site: http://www.bea.doc.gov/ What (1) are the advanced, preliminary, and final estimates of the increase or decrease in the 4th quarter GDP compared to the 3rd quarter, both in terms of dollar amount and percentage? (Hint: they are published in 2002 Survey of Current Business which is available at BEA s web site.) (2) Those release dates are important time for Wall Street, which always watches very closely these extremely important macroeconomic data. Calculate the percentage changes in S&P500 index immediately following the releases of GDP data: from 01/30/02 to 01/31/02, from 02/28/02 to 03/01/02, and from 03/28/02 to 04/01/02. (Hint: you find daily historical data on S&P500 index from Yahoo: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/hp?s=%5EGSPC (3) Can you make sense of the changes in the stock market after the release of the macro data?
