122 com wednesday WEEK 1 1/25/2008 12:46:00 PM huntington clash of civilizations cultural fault line e.g. yugoslavia asian american, latinos, not assimilating, not 100% americans, bring in values that weakens the US co-existence nationalism---e.g. china and japan, close trade relation, trying hard to compress nationalism classify huntington's view relativist, every group have its own truth therefore there are multiple truths, or no truths 1. appiah's cosmopolitan ethic universalism-there is one truth that all civilization agree upon, west tend to be universalist and think western is the truth our actions affect other people how can we coexist in this world? rooted cosmopolitanism moral conflict, we are concerned about everybody but we recognize legitimacy of difference 2. thick and thin morality appiah from gana half african and british thin concept we all recognize as valid, universal thick individual view of these concepts thin broad, general concept e.g. freedom, what is the right degree of freedom? thick---courage is sth that is thin, but defined in particular ways, applied to diff social situation no universal idea of courage morality is first thick, when u try to agree with others and deal with ppl from other cultures, become thin, start to have more abstract ideas some thick concepts are only found in certain society when on party has a concept and other party does not e.g. gana, senior maternal uncle act out role of father, many women live with brother, the brother have to support the child, if fail, act as unethically thin universal value is good parenting expression of this is particular, closely related to local customs and expectations 3. the three levels of disagreements second level of disagreements, even if we have same moral ideas, we may not agree politeness is thick concept thin value one, no sexual immorality thin value two, no domination or abuse thin value three, strive for economic order, just economy and society, thick=capital or socialist society third level of disagreement, weight of different values we all agree freedom and equality is imp value, which do we give more weight to? american more to freedom, european more to equality authority should be obeyed, confucians give it more weight, you dont marry the dream man if your parents disagree. there we need to be pluralist, we agree on the thin values that is imp, but at the thick level we give different weight harmonious society, different ways to achieve it, europeans vs americans ideas 4. disputing with strangers when interacting with ppl from different culture, disagreement is greater thick value embedded in diff parts of life 1) we can agree on what to do even when we dont know why 2) we exaggerate the reason of arguement, we changed our views on reasonable arguements? no, our reasons are affected by people around us 3) most conflicts are about interest than values values--sth that the cultures celebrate harder to resolves conflict of interest than conflict of values 5. conversations across cultures com 122 Friday 1. modernization and westernization 2. the enlightenment project and its enemies 3. what is occidentalism? 4. japan's war against the west 1/25/2008 12:46:00 PM 5. understanding occidentalism, west's traumatic impact on the rest national interest realist---- politics and economics, try to maximize power and wealth huntington not so much abt max power and wealth values, culture way of life is somehow most important, that is what they are trying to maximize he adds another dimension about the culture and he thinks that is the deepest, not so much abt competition of power and wealth conflict of interst is more imp than conflict of value universalist rooted cosmopolitan accept difference realist no thin morality different way of interpreting democracy is different in each culture=thick, we all agree the importance of democracy=thin relativist only has thin universalist thick level find difference pluralist say we agree on values but put different weights on them US freedom comes before equality europe equality come before freedom particularist, u identify with ur own particular culture and think as urselves different oppose to universalism different culture and community they are emphasized strong particularist, cant see connection with other culture similiar to relativist, stronger in particularist cosmopolitan broader similarity we have western colonist intrusion of other parts of the world, force them to come to term with the west three choices of the rest in relation to the west: 1 assimilation (westernization) 2. modernization not westernization 3. occidentalism turkey try to become western, now moderate religious party, huntington call turkey torn culture, civilization japan used all 3 ways singapore try to become modern but not westernized, try to preserve own culture japan eastern spirit western knowledge occidentalism---war against the west, attempt to destroy the west e.g. 1868-1890 japan westernization, everything western was good modernization 1890-1931 become modern and econ, emperor system revived 1931 invasion of china till the end of WW2 1945,ultra nationalism, idea of japan is going to fight the west and gain own colony in asia, fight western colonization this is occidentalism modernization and westernization contact with west choose M not W, without M, cant be strong and powerful, rich, japan want to become rich and powerful nation, can only do that when take in western tech and science universal western culture and traditions are things they dont want can you really divide M and W? most japanese 1890-1931 believe that, some believe it today now. modern is so influence by japan defensive measure, only way to preserve integrity, if u r weak, west will come and take over japanese become strong enuf that west didnt colonize them east asian tigers O took place in japan because the west is weakening in 1929 economic depression japan want to be accepted as equal, racism by US e.g. no immigration 1905 SF riots becoz japan and chinese attending sch with white force japanese and chinese in separate schools japanese no positive attitude towards the west when in west is weakening, japanese decided to make themselves more superior Modern society without democracy e.g. singapore individualism, newly industrialized society, 18 century enlightenment project, coming right after dev of modern sci, can bring us certiain kind of truth at tht time, western thot become more universalist, sci is the road to truth, all problem can be solve by tech model of society in the west is universal back lash of this idea also start from the west---german jealous of french, they were forefront of dev of sci and tech, german say they are diff, these universal idea one utopia that can be applied to the world is not agreed by german and they attack the enlightenment--- counter enlightenment, romanticism universal model of society is saying that the french way is the only way far beyond just germany, lots of other country begin to have counter ideas too e.g. russia german keep their own identity 1870 germany unified O japan war against the west 1931-1945, tradition japanese culture, modern west culture is shallow and rootless, destroy human creativity, japan unified community organic and natural, ppl not connected in the west, seen as individuals, clear difference in value, get back to pure japanese spirit Iran---shah western influence, rootless and mechanical, losing spiritual values, going back to the past O tends to be anti-american, against globalization, G brings american culture with it, O as the reaction to that, there is a need to fight, to destroy it, to define O it is when anti western idea become violent,, foundation advocate war against the west west is dehumanized, ironic, west dehumanized the rest (orientalism) but now it is dehumanized. what do they want to destroy of the west? the city, middle class (capitalist) have no sole and only interested in money, warrior tradition (japan), against reason tech and sci, (radical islam) against feminism( destroy foundation of the honor of the male), infidel, japan was the define race we need to understand why O come into being origins of O, western intrusion, trauma of invasion of the west made japanese frantic at WW2 1/25/2008 12:46:00 PM
