ONE THE HUNDRED AND NINTH ANNUAL MA Y C O M M E N C E M E N T Greensboro Coliseum Greensboro, North Carolina Ten O'Clock Sunday Morning, May 13 Two Thousand and One THE UNIVERSITY OF A BRIEF HISTORY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT GREENSBORO The University of North Carolina at Greensboro was established by legislative enactment on February 18, 1891 and opened its doors on October 5, 1892. The institution came into being as a direct result of the efforts of Dr. Charles Duncan McIver on behalf of the education of women. To Dr. McIver, more than any other individual, the University owes its foundation. He became its first president and served until his death in 1906. Since its founding, the institution's name has been changed several times: 1891-1919State Normal and Industrial College; 1919-1932 North Carolina College for Women; 1932-1963 The Woman's College of the University of North Carolina. In the 1963 General Assembly the name was changed to The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and by the same Act the institution became co-educational. In the fall of 1964 the first class of male students was admitted. In 1972 the General Assembly in special session merged all State supported institutions of Higher Education into The University of North Carolina without changing the names of each campus. Thus, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is now a member of the 16-campus University. From a student body of 223 and a faculty of 15 in 1892, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has grown to a student body of 12,731, including some 2,710 graduate students, and a faculty of 631. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro includes the following academic units: the College of Arts and Sciences; the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics; School of Education; School of Health and Human Performance; School of Human Environmental Sciences; School of Music; and School of Nursing. The University offers six different bachelors degrees in over 100 fields of study, twelve masters degrees in a wide variety of concentrations, and three doctoral degrees in 15 areas of study. THE PROCESSIONAL The procession is led by the Faculty Marshal bearing the Mace, followed by the Assistant Chief Marshals and the banner bearers. The Chief Marshal enters next, leading the platform party, which includes the Chancellor, representatives of the Trustees, The University of North Carolina system, the speaker, and honorary degree recipients. Faculty enter next, followed by the graduate and undergraduate degree candidates. THE MACE The Mace is a ceremonial insignia of the University in a tradition which dates back to antiquity. Handchased in sterling silver, it bears academic motifs depicting the history of the institution and is carried by the Faculty Marshal on official occasions. The Mace of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro was presented by the Class of 1926 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of its graduation and the Bicentennial of the Nation. It was first carried at Commencement in 1978. THE FACULTY MARSHAL The Faculty Senate of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro adopted on November 3, 1999 a policy for appointing the Faculty Marshal. The Chancellor appoints the Faculty Marshal from among three nominees recommended by the Faculty Senate leadership (Chair, Chair-Elect, Secretary). The Faculty Marshal is a respected senior member of the faculty who has a consistent and continuous record of excellent teaching, scholarly achievements, and service to the University. Years in rank as Professor and years of employment at UNCG are considered. The term of appointment for a Faculty Marshal is five years. Duties include leading the academic procession during University ceremonies, carrying the University Mace, and membership in the Commencement Committee, which plans faculty participation at Commencement. THE CHAIN-OF-OFFICE The Chain-of-Office is worn by the Chancellor of the University on occasions when the Mace is carried. The ceremonial medallion, hand-chased in sterling silver, bears the seal of the University, and indicates that 1 the Chancellor is the temporary embodiment of the authority vested in the institution. The Chain-of-Office of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro was presented by the Class of 1929 on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of its graduation and was worn by the Chancellor for the first time at the 1979 Commencement. The Class of 1940 chose to complete the original design of the Chain-of-Office on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of its graduation. Each link of the sterling silver neck chain is an individually cast laurel leaf. The medallion clasp, also in sterling silver, bears the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina. The completed Chainof-Office was worn by the Chancellor for the first time at the 1990 Commencement. THE UNIVERSITY FLAG The University Flag made its debut on campus in the academic processional for Patricia A. Sullivan's installation as Chancellor of the University on October 2, 1995. The flag bears the traditional colors of gold and white, which were first used in the commencement ceremony of 1894, as well as navy, which was added as the third color in 1987. The University Seal, depicting the likeness of Minerva, appears on both sides of the flag. The UNCG Board of Trustees approved the design as the official flag of the institution on September 7, 1995. The flag will be carried today by Assistant Chief Marshal Maria Elizabeth Tuazon. THE ACADEMIC BANNERS The Academic Banners represent the constituent parts of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro: The Graduate School; the College of Arts and Sciences, and the six professional schoolsThe Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics, the School of Education, the School of Health and Human Performance, the School of Human Environmental Sciences, the School of Music, and the School of Nursing. The designs are unique to this University; the colors have historical association with the respective academic disciplines. The banners are a memorial to Marguerite Norman Felton, teacher of Chemistry at The University from 1956 to 1979. Over the years several generations of College and School Banners have existed. The current Banners were redesigned and displayed for the first time at the December 1999 commencement. The banners appear in the procession based upon the founding date of the school or college. Kristina E. Paabo ACADEMIC REGALIA Academic costumes seem to have originated at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge about 650 years ago; and to this date, the most colorful gowns in the world are those worn at Oxford functions. Williams College in the United States used the academic regalia first in 1883. In 1932, a revised Intercollegiate Code on Academic Regalia was presented by a committee appointed by the American Council on Education and only a few minor changes have been made since that date. The Bachelor's gown is worn closed and is distinguished by its long, pointed sleeves. The Master's gown has a long sleeve, oblong in shape with an arc cut out at the bottom and the forearm protrudes through the slit at the elbow. The Doctor's gown is designed to be worn open but has a velvet panel draped around the neck and extending down the front. Three horizontal bars are stitched on the upper region of the bell shaped sleeves. The velvet trimming may be black or the color distinctive to the faculty to which the degree refers. In the United States, the hood is the most noticeable feature of the regalia. Its size and shape marks the degree of the wearer. The hood initially had three functions: as a covering for the head, as a cape, or when 2 hanging from the shoulder, as a bag in which alms were collected. Hoods for American usage were lined with colored silk. The colors of the linings are indicative of the degree-granting institution, and the velvet trim indicates the degree awarded. The colors of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro are gold, white, and blue, with gold and white being used in the hood. The outside of the hood is black and bordered with velvet or velveteen to indicate the discipline. The degree and not the department in which the major work was done governs the proper color of the border. The Master's hood is six inches in length. The Doctoral hood has a rounded base and is four feet in length. The borders of the Masters', and Doctors' hoods are three and five inches respectively. Each of the colors used in the hood borders has historical association. Gray The cap is worn both indoors and out when gowns are used. The tassel is worn on the right until the degree is conferred. It is then moved to the left front quarter and may be of color indicating the major field when worn by the undergraduate. The black or gold tassel is appropriate for the doctorate, and black for the masters. THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY BELL Following the benediction, the University Bell will ring in honor of the Graduates. The University Bell sounded the opening of the State Normal and Industrial School (now UNCG) on October 5, 1892. For forty years until electric bells were installed it marked the significant moments of the day. The University Bell hung from a belfry in the Anniversary Plaza from 1967 until 1987 when it was removed for the purpose of restoration. The Class of 1940, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of its graduation, commissioned the restoration of the University Bell. UNIVERSITY MARSHALS Escorts for all lines of march during Commencement and ushers at entries to the Coliseum are provided by the University Marshals, an academic honorary organization composed of full-time upperclass students with academic averages of 3.65 or greater. These students may be recognized by the gold sashes which they wear during the ceremonies. UNIVERSITY AMBASSADORS The University Ambassadors, founded in 1990, is a student organization dedicated to serving the needs of the University as campus tour guides, student orientation assistants, and student recruitment volunteers. They offer support for various alumni activities and serve as hosts for numerous University events such as Commencement. INTERNATIONAL FLAGS The international flags on display today represent over sixty countries from which students have come to UNCG and to which our students have traveled for study abroad. Use of the international flags at Commencement began with the December 1999 ceremony. 3 PROGRAM PRELUDE The University Commencement Band John R. Adelman DOCTOR OF LAWS Spanning a period of over thirty years, you have developed an extraordinary career in government, industry, private consulting, and higher education. You have served as a teacher, writer, government employee, business executive, and prominent official in the administration of two American presidents. Through your many contributions in each of these areas, you have distinguished yourself as a daring and creative thinker and a bold and decisive leader. These are among the esteemed traits celebrated by The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After earning a doctorate in Political Science at Georgetown University in 1975, your distinguished accomplishments in various federal offices led to your appointment as special assistant in the Department of Defense under President Gerald Ford. Moving to the prestigious Stanford Research Institute in the late 1970s, your articulation of intriguing theses on the lack of democracy among many nations of Africa proved to be a turning point in your career. Catching the eye of top officials in the presidential campaign of Ronald Reagan, you were soon relied upon for important position papers and were later named a foreign policy advisor in the new Reagan administration. Soon afterwards you accepted a post at the United Nations, becoming the U.N.s second-highest ranking American. You proved to be a strong and able defender of U.S. views. President Reagan nominated you as Director of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency in January 1983, and following Senate confirmation, you served as the presidents chief arms advisor and a forceful proponent of Reagan administration policy. In December 1987, after devoting seven years to the signing of the Intermediate Range Nuclear Force Accord the only agreement ever to eliminate an entire category of nuclear weapons you chose to seek other challenges outside of government. Your successes there have been as well documented as those in Washington. You have been a private advisor for major corporations doing business domestically and overseas, served as vice chairman and executive vice president of a major publicly-traded technology company, held the post of editor for a popular Washington magazine, and continue to provide business consulting on issues of management and leadership. As an adjunct professor at Georgetown, George Washington, and Johns Hopkins universities, you also provide richly informed instruction and cutting-edge scholarship in subject areas ranging from national security policy to Shakespeare. Your service contributions are equally impressive, with a long list of speaking and writing engagements, as well as memberships on various boards of directors and governors. In appreciation for your pursuit of key public and private sector objectives, your vigorous service to a broad range of important audiences, and for your exceptional contributions to governmental and educational discourse, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is pleased to confer upon you the degree, Doctor of Laws. 6 HONORARY DEGREE Bonnie Angelo DOCTOR OF LETTERS A self-described political junkie, you graduated from Womans College and embarked upon a prestigious journalism career that took you to the highest levels of politics and government in the United States and abroad. Holding major assignments in Washington, London and New York, and covering events in all 50 states and more than 60 countries, your success has in many ways been unprecedented for a woman in the field of journalism. Your courage, determination, and talent allowed you to break open the barriers to success for all aspiring journalists, men and women alike. Generations of news reporters are in your debt. For your uncommon courage and remarkable achievements, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is indeed proud to call you one of its own. Winning several awards as a newspaper reporter during the early years of your career, you soon moved on to Newsday in New York. You later accepted a post as a nationally syndicated columnist, and then joined Time magazine as a Washington correspondent, specializing in coverage of the White House and politics. Your career has been described as being studded with firsts. As Times London bureau chief in 1978, you were the first woman to head an overseas news bureau. There you were also the first woman president of the Association of American Correspondents and chaired the first international conference of the International Womens Media Foundation. In New York in 1985, as Times Eastern Regional Bureau Chief, you were the first female head of a regional news bureau. These accomplishments propelled you to the presidency of the Womens National Press Club (later merged with the National Press Club), where you helped begin the fight to end discrimination against female journalists. You became Times first Correspondent at Large in 1990, with the mandate to concentrate on profiles and interviews anywhere in the nation and the world. Another recent and outstanding accomplishment is the publication of your highly regarded book on the mothers of modern U. S. presidents. Your accomplishments have been recognized through your receipt of numerous honors, including the lifetime achievement award from the International Womens Media Foundation, the Alumni Distinguished Service Award from UNCG, and induction into the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame. You have remained actively engaged in service to professional organizations as well as your alma mater, where in 1975 you became the first alumna to serve as Commencement speaker. Eight years later you also delivered the McIver Lecture. In recognition of your bold and precedent-setting achievements in professional journalism, your outstanding public service activities, and for your genuine exemplification of the values that this institution celebrates, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is pleased to confer upon you the degree, Doctor of Letters. 7 HONORARY DEGREE Jean Bailey Brooks DOCTOR OF SCIENCE A long-time catalyst for change and service in the Greensboro community, you were the first female gynecologist in Greensboro and served the community in that capacity for 40 years. Through your work and public service, you embodied the foundational hope upon which The University of North Carolina at Greensboro was founded: to pioneer the way for women to be successful and to go beyond the parameters of societal thinking in their courage, ability, imagination, and endeavors. Indeed, you have used your energies, knowledge, talents, funds, and influence to make a difference in the lives of the men and women of our community, our state, and our world. After formal education at Duke University and the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, you operated a gynecological practice in Greensboro from 1948 to 1988, and also served as the Medical Director of the Greensboro Maternity Clinic from 1948 to 1952. Throughout your illustrious career and into your active retirement, you have shared your expertise on a broad scale. Among others, UNCG has been a major beneficiary of your efforts. Since 1996 you have served as a member of the School of Nursing Advisory Board, and since 1997 you have been a member of the Board of Directors of UNCGs Musical Arts Guild. Also in 1997, in honor of your daughter, you established the Helen Brooks Nursing Faculty Program Endowment. In December 2000, your generous pledge made possible the future establishment of an endowment to support the School of Nursings Nurse Practitioner Program. Numerous local, statewide, and national groups have called upon you for leadership. Time after time you answered the call, assuming positions of responsibility in a variety of worthwhile organizations. An abbreviated but representative listing of these organizations would include the Greensboro Symphony, Greensboro Opera Company, Greensboro Day School, Greensboro Commission on Alcoholism, Greensboro Community Council, Childrens Home Society, Family Services/Travelers Aid, Quota International, American Hearing Society, Greensboro Academy of Medicine, and the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Owing to your extensive community involvement and generous spirit, you were awarded the Philanthropist of the Year Award in December 2000 by the Triad Chapter of the National Society of Fundraising Executives. Based upon your many outstanding accomplishments, and for your kind and courageous service to Greensboro and to the broader communities of medicine and education, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is pleased to confer upon you the degree, Doctor of Science. 8 CANDIDATES FOR GRADUATE DEGREES PHILOSOPHY Paula Yvette Goodwin ................. Norwood 17 CANDIDATES FOR UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES GRADUATION WITH HONORS Graduation with honors for undergraduates is based on all courses (including the last semesters work) for which grades and grade points are given. However, the honors shown in the Commencement program for May undergraduates are based on work taken through Fall Semester 2000. Since Spring Semester grades had not been reported at the time this program was printed, some modifications in the tentative honors shown will have to be made following the recording of the Spring Semester 2001 grades. To be eligible for honors at the end of the senior year, a student must have completed at least 45 hours of work in residence at UNCG, not including hours for which credit and grade points have been received by special examinations. Honors are awarded to graduating seniors as follows. The highest level is summa cum laude (with highest honor), maintaining a grade point average between 3.90 - 4.00 for all work taken at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The next level, magna cum laude (with great honor), indicates an average of 3.70 - 3.89. The third level, cum laude (with honor), represents an achievement of 3.50 - 3.69.
